WEST POINT, N.Y. – After 18 years as head coach of Army’s hockey program, Rob Riley announced his retirement from college coaching today, ending a coaching career that spanned more than three decades. Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan named Brian Riley, associate head coach of the Black Knights for the past five years, to succeed his older brother at the helm of the Black Knights’ program.

Rob Riley, who won his 300th career game last January, stood 14th among active head coaches on the NCAA all-time wins list following this past winter’s campaign. Only eight other current head coaches in the nation have been with the same school longer than Riley. He leaves the coaching profession to pursue an opportunity with Legg Mason Inc. in Boston, Mass.

He concludes his coaching career at Army with a 257-288-33 (.473) mark and an overall ledger of 306-302-34 (.503). Riley and his father, legendary Hall of Famer Jack Riley, are the all-time winningest father-son combination in college hockey history with 848 victories between them...

Atlantic Hockey Update Through March 7

Wakefield, Mass. - - Outstanding individual performances marked the final weekend of the 2003-04 Atlantic Hockey Season. Leading the way was this week's Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week, Tim Olsen. The junior forward hailing from Vadnais Heights, Minnesota had a seven point weekend for the Huskies. Olsen scored twice and added an assist in UConn's 6-1 defeat of AIC, and scored three goals and tallied another assist in a 9-6 win at Army. The hat trick was Olsen’s second of the season, and third of his two-year career at UConn. Olsen is joined by a pair of netminders who were stoic in goal this weekend, each garnering Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the week accolades. Simon St. Pierre of Bentley (Jr., G, Montreal, QUE) stopped 62 of a possible 63 shots as the Falcons skated to a pair of wins against Army and Holy Cross. Jamie Holden of Quinnipiac (Jr., G, Telkwa, B.C.) had an equally impressive performance stopping 86 of 89 shots for the Bobcats who had wins over Sacred Heart and Holy Cross. Rounding out this week's awards was the Atlantic Hockey Freshman of the Week. Bentley's Carmen Posteraro (Fr., F, Pittsburgh, PA) tallied one goal and three assists for the Falcons this weekend.

Atlantic Hockey Online Spotlight: The Young Face of UConn Hockey

It is an unusual situation for a roster of 26 to include 15 freshmen, but that is the reality for the 2003-04 University of Connecticut men’s hockey team. Of the 28 men on the Huskies’ roster last season, only 10 returned this year. The result was head coach Bruce Marshall’s largest recruiting class in his 16 years at the helm of the program.

The freshmen hail from eight states across the northern half of the country. Massachusetts is the home state of four freshmen, while groups of three call New York and Minnesota home. Two pairs of freshmen played for the same team prior to coming to UConn. James Martin and Matt Scherer both played for the Tri-City Storm in the USHL, while J.R. Corkery and Nick Marean were both members of the Danville Wings in the NAHL.

Atlantic Hockey Online Spotlight: Persick Works To Make Canisius and Buffalo A Better Place

BUFFALO, N.Y. – A tough guy mentality is commonly associated with hockey players. Grit, determination and physical toughness are all traits that describe how the public traditionally views hockey players. Every so often, a student-athlete comes around that shows another side of the “typical” hockey player -- the compassionate, caring individual that is honored by his brethren for helping others and making his community a better place to live. Canisius College junior defenseman Mark Persick, a finalist for the 2003-04 Hockey Humanitarian Award, is one of those student-athletes.

Persick’s accomplishments have earned him the honor of being one of the five student-athletes throughout all of college hockey to be considered for the ninth annual award,...
