The clock struck midnight too soon for the Lakers.
Mercyhurst came close to knocking off the top-seeded Boston College Friday evening at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass., but the Eagles overcame two separate deficits to defeat the Lakers 5-4 in one of the many thrilling games of the weekend in NCAA Regional action.
The Lakers gave the fans at the DCU Center something to cheer about early on, as Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week David Wrigley scored the first goal of the NCAA Tournament only 27 seconds into the game, connecting on a beautiful pass from Matt Warren at the top of the crease for a 1-0 Mercyhurst lead.

Weekly Release #22 - Mercyhurst Takes 2005 Atlantic Hockey Championship

The Lakers stayed the course through the 2005 Atlantic Hockey Tournament, overcoming adversity to claim the Atlantic Hockey Championship on Saturday with a 3-2 overtime victory against host Quinnipiac. Mercyhurst now looks to extend its eight-game winning streak when the Lakers journey to Worcester for the second time this season to battle Boston College in the NCAA Tournament.
It’s the third time in the last five years that Mercyhurst, the preseason favorite in Atlantic Hockey, will compete in the NCAA Tournament. The Lakers had previously appeared on the national stage in 2001 and 2003, falling to eventual national champion Minnesota in 2003, 9-2 in Minneapolis. Boston College, the Hockey East regular season and tournament champion, has competed in the NCAA Tournament the past three years in a row, winning the national championship in 2001. The two teams will meet for the first time on the ice on Friday at 4:30 at the DCU Center.

Mercyhurst Claims 2005 Atlantic Hockey Championship with 3-2 Overtime Win

Northford, Conn. – Scott Champagne tallied the game-winner at the 4:56 mark of overtime and sent the Laker bench into bedlam as Mercyhurst overcame two separate deficits to capture the 2005 Atlantic Hockey Tournament Championship 3-2 over host Quinnipiac Saturday evening at the Northford Ice Pavilion in Northford, Conn.

Champagne collected a Ben Cottreau rebound on the right side low and beat Holden at 4:56, as the Lakers (18-15-4) used transition effectively to score the decisive goal. Mercyhurst has won 8 straight games, advancing to Saturday’s championship after defeating Holy Cross 4-3 in overtime the night before.

“Obviously, we’re very happy on the Mercyhurst side,” remarked head coach Rick Gotkin. “Just like last night against Holy Cross, we found a way to come up with another goal and win it. I think our guys worked hard tonight, and I think Quinnipiac also worked hard, but in the end I think we just got one more bounce.”

Northford, Conn. – Quinnipiac’s Matt Froehlich netted two goals and defenseman Reid Cashman collected two assists as a two-goal second period allowed the Bobcats to advance past Bentley 4-1 Friday afternoon in the first semifinal of the Atlantic Hockey Tournament at the Northford Ice Pavilion.

“We’re very excited as a team to advance to the championship game here tomorrow night,” commented head coach Rand Pecknold. “I’m proud of my guys, we’ve had a great second half to the season. Maybe we didn’t play our best game of the season tonight, but we played pretty well. It was a gritty game, and the guys did what they needed to do to win.”

Weekly Release #21 - Field Of Four Set For Weekend

The one weekend that everyone in Atlantic Hockey has been thinking about since October has finally arrived. Four teams advanced out of the Quarterfinal round on Saturday and extended their season in the process. Before the weekend is over, one team shall hoist the Atlantic Hockey Championship trophy on the ice in Northford, Conn., along with securing a trip to the NCAA Tournament in the process.
Quinnipiac made sure that the Atlantic Hockey Tournament would run through its home ice with a win Saturday night against Army. After the Black Knights advanced past American International in the play-in game Wednesday night, 5-3, Army headed to top-seed Quinnipiac for a chance at revenge against the Bobcats. The Black Knights had succumb to two Bobcat comebacks in the third period just over a month prior.

Bentley Advances Past Canisius, 4-2

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Bentley College scored three third-period
goals to upset Canisius College 4-2 in the Atlantic Hockey
quarterfinals Saturday night at the Buffalo State Sports
Arena. Canisius, the #2 seed, has its season end at 16-15-4.
The #7-seeded Falcons improve to 8-19-6 and will face top-
seeded Quinnipiac in the semifinals next weekend.

Canisius jumped to an early 1-0 lead just 21 seconds into
the game on Jon Durno’s fifth goal of the season. Durno
tipped a shot from the left point by Craig Nooyen past
Bentley netminder Simon St. Pierre, giving the Griffs an
early advantage. The lead would hold until the 8:57 mark of
the second period, when Bentley’s Brendan McCartin knotted
the game at 1-1. A shot by John Chase bounced off the end
boards and McCartin caught Canisius goalie Bryan Worosz out
of position and deposited the puck into the empty net.

Quinnipiac pulled away from the pack at the right moment in the season, completing an epic turnaround and capturing the Atlantic Hockey regular season championship with a win Thursday evening at Connecticut. The Bobcats head into the upcoming week with the top seed in the tournament, and will host the winner of the American International - Army meeting slated for Tuesday night.
The Bobcats headed to Storrs Thursday night with more than just the regular season title on the line, as the winner of the Quinnipiac-Connecticut contest would earn the ‘Heroes Hat’. The Huskies looked to have the early advantage after Tim Olsen opened the scoring only seconds into the game, however the Bobcats rebounded to take control later on in the first frame and never relinquished the lead en route to a 4-2 win. Quinnipiac claimed the Hat for the fourth straight year, along with the regular season title and the season series over the Huskies, 2-1, with both wins coming on the road.
