Canisius Upsets Quinnipiac 1-0 In Overtime
Mar 13, 2004

West Point, New York - - The second Atlantic Hockey Quarterfinal pitted #6 Canisius College versus #3 Quinnipiac University. In their three prior meetings during the 2003-04 Atlantic Hockey Regular Season, Canisius held the edge over the Bobcats with a 2-1 record.

A quick paced physical game ended in overtime as Canisius upset Quinnipiac, 1-0. As the score indicated, the game was dominated by remarkable goaltending. The Griffins improved to 10-15-8 overall while the Bobcats end their season with a 15-14-6 mark.

It just took 1:37 into the overtime period as Canisius’ Justin Carre (Jr., F, Azilda, ONT) came up big for the Griffins finding a way past the stoic Quinnipiac goalie Jamie Holden (Jr., G, Telkwa, B.C.) Carre’s goal was unassisted and perhaps his biggest of the season.

Bryan Worosz (Jr., G, Brantford, ONT) was between the pipes for Canisius. He turned away 27 saves for Griffins in 61:37 of play. In addition, Worosz was able to stymie the Bobcat attack and power play throughout the game.

Quinnipiac found themselves in the power play situation early in the first period but could not capitalize. Shortly after the man advantage expired, Quinnipiac was called for its first penalty of the night. The Griffins had several scoring opportunities during this power play but Jamie Holden, an Atlantic Hockey First Team All-Star, came up with save after save.

A high sticking call at the 10:14 mark of the first period gave the Bobcats their second chance at the power play. Quinnipiac spent most of the two minute man advantage in the Canisius zone. Worosz stopped all shots to preserve the scoreless tie.

The second period had an identical start to the first but this time a Quinnipiac interference call at 2:45 put Canisius in the power play early. The Bobcats’ penalty killing team worked hard and limited Canisius to only two shots on goal.

Holden faced another Canisius power play shortly after the first expired. At 5:38 of the second period Quinnipiac was called for a hooking penalty. The Quinnipiac penalty killing team continued to play well and the Bobcats killed off the Griffins second man advantage of the night.

A lot of action happened towards the end of the second period and with :48 left both Canisius and Quinnipiac had off-setting roughing penalties called but the tide changed quickly for the Bobcats as Canisius picked up a boarding penalty putting them down a skater. Quinnipiac did not capitalize before time expired in the second period and the game remained scoreless heading into the third period.

The intensity and physical play continued to grow in the third period as both teams did not want the season to end today. The man advantage carried over from the second period expired for the Bobcats with only two shots taken on goal.

Penalties were assessed at the 6:24 mark of the third period to both teams as the team skated 4-on-4. Action slowed down briefly during the 4-on-4 as both teams were cautious not to give up a careless goal. For the majority of the third period, the Bobcats and Griffins traded rushes at Holden and Worosz. Perhaps the best scoring opportunity for either team during regulation came at the 18:00 mark of the third period. Quinnipiac’s Chris White (Jr., F, Santa Anna, CA) found a clear path to Worosz but his shot attempt was pushed aside by the goalie sending the game into extra periods.

Overtime’s only shot by Justin Carre was all it took to determine which team moved onto the semifinals tomorrow at Tate Rink.
