Consistently ranked among the top regional colleges in the Northeast, Canisius College is one of 28 Jesuit colleges in the nation. Canisius is proud to share in the Jesuit heritage, which offers students a unique blend of academic, social and spiritual growth opportunities to prepare them to be leaders in their professions, communities and service to humanity.
The Canisius campus is located in a residential neighborhood in North-Central Buffalo only minutes from downtown Buffalo. The Metro Rail rapid transit system connects the college directly to the city's waterfront, downtown theatre district and some of Buffalo's most exciting sports arenas.
The college is comprised of the Richard J. Wehle School of Business, the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education and Human Services. Canisius enrolls approximately 5,000 students a year with a student body divided almost equally between men and women. All undergraduates take core curriculum courses that are designed to provide written and oral communication skills and develop critical thinking skills. Canisius is listed in Peterson's Competitive Colleges 2003-2004 guide and ranked 25th in the US News and World Report 2005 ranking of Best Universities Master's North. The jump from 35 to 25, is the largest jump by any school in the tier.
There are more than 1,000 courses in over 70 distinct majors, minors and special programs offered at Canisius. Majors in emerging fields such as bioinformatics, telecommunications management, accounting information systems, health and human performance, international business and digital media arts have recently been added to Canisius' comprehensive curriculum.
With a student/faculty ratio of 14:1, students have the opportunity to work closely with their instructors, often publishing or presenting scholarly articles based on joint research. Ninety-seven percent of the 212 full-time faculty at Canisius hold a PhD or other terminal degree.
Over 100 college-sponsored organizations offer Canisius students experiences related to service, the media, student government, academics and religious and social interests. The college is also home to 16 NCAA Division I sports teams.
Students serve others through opportunities that are offered and encouraged through Campus Ministry, including volunteering at area hospitals, tutoring, visiting the elderly and staffing local soup kitchens for the poor.
President of Canisius College since 1993, Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J., has demonstrated his leadership and commitment to the college and the Western New York community by overseeing the investment of more than $113 million in the Canisius campus over the last 12 years.
Lyons Hall now serves as the gateway to the college on the west side of Main Street. It houses technology classrooms; the college's Media Center, with high-tech digital video production lab; and the Vogt Art Studio. The Marie Maday Theater, also located in Lyons Hall, and the renovated Montante Cultural Center, enhance the cultural life of the Canisius community.
The college's campus cornerstone, Old Main classroom building, has been completely renovated. The $12 million Old Main project updated the century-old building into a state-of-the-art hall of learning that is home to 50 of the college's 90 technology classrooms.
Canisius housing is like a home away from home with comfort and technology all part of residence life at the college. The campus residence halls are brand new or have been completely renovated. The college's newest residence, Eastwood Hall, opened this fall and is now home to 286 freshmen and sophomores.
All resident accommodations at the college are fully wired to include individual Internet service, cable television and local telephone service with voicemail. A variety of housing options are available, including the renovated Bosch and Frisch Halls, which are the primary residences for first-year students.
Apartment-style living is available for students in their sophomore, junior or senior years in one of the college's townhouse complexes or apartment buildings.
Canisius has more than 34,000 alumni, representing every state and numerous foreign countries. For more information about Canisius College, visit us on the Web at www.canisius.edu.
