Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team Announced

August 26, 2004

The first-ever Atlantic Hockey All-Academic team features a total of 87 student-athletes who have added to their success on the ice by excelling in the classroom.

Quinnipiac goaltender Jamie Holden (Telkwa, B.C.) took home the Top Scholar-Athlete award after posting a perfect 4.0. A biology and pre-med student at Quinnipiac, Holdens performance in the classroom was equally matched on the ice for the Bobcats in 2003-04. Holden earned recognition as the top goaltender in Atlantic Hockey, along with a spot on the Atlantic Hockey All-Conference First Team. He set records at Quinnipiac last season with the best single-season save percentage at .932, and the lowest goals against with a 2.32 GAA.

Holden backstops the Atlantic Hockey Academic All-Star team (best GPA by position). Matt Froehlich and Aaron Ludwig join teammate Holden from the forward position, while Justin Carre of Canisius rounds out the top academic forwards. Sacred Hearts Todd Spencer and Canisius Josh Zavits earned spots as the top two blueliners academically.

Canisius had the most student-athletes on the All-Academic Team, with a total of 15 players making the grade in 2003-04. Closely behind the Golden Griffs were Bentley and Quinnipiac, who each had 13 skaters make the All-Academic Team.

To qualify for the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team an individual must post a 3.0 grade point average or higher in each of the two academic periods during which his team was actively competing. Atlantic Hockeys Top Scholar Athlete is an award given annually to the player who achieves the highest grade point average over the course of the two academic semesters of competition.
