Giffin continued to impress with his solid play in net for the Griffs. Giffin posted 23 saves in a 3-2 non-conference loss to Niagara Friday night.

Weekly Honor Roll

Brendan McCartin (Sr, D, Camp Hill, Penn.) - Senior defender was named to the Q-Cup All-Tournament Team after notching a pair of assists in Bentley’s 3-1 win over Air Force on Friday.

Mike Ruberto (So, F, Stoney Brook, ONT) - Ruberto, last week’s Player of the Week, kept his offensive instincts going last weekend, scoring both Canisius goals in a 3-2 loss to Niagara. Ruberto has a league-high seven points on four goals and thee assists.

Chris Myhro (Fr, F, Eden Prairie, Minn.) - Myhro scored his first collegiate goal in the Huskies’ 4-4 tie with Union on Saturday night. He helped to even the score in the second period when UConn was down 2-1.

Team Notes

American International: AIC hosts its’ first-ever ECACHL opponent, since moving to Division I, Friday when it entertains Quinnipiac.

Army: The Black Knights dropped both of their games at the Mutual of Omaha Stampede in Omaha, Neb., this weekend. Army took a 2-2 tie into the third period with host Nebraska-Omaha on Friday night in the tournament opener, but a power play goal in the first minute of the final period held up for UNO. Senior goalie, Brad Roberts stopped 37 shots and was named the game’s third star on Friday night. Roberts moved into second place on Army’s all-time saves list with 2,148 stops in his career. Bryce Hollweg and Brady Dolim each scored two goals during the weekend tournament. They own all four of Army’s goals on the season. Luke Flicek registered three assists in the two games as well. He picked up assists on both of Army’s goals Saturday night in a 5-2 loss to Ferris State. Army returns to Tate Rink for its home opener Fri., Oct. 21 against No. 16 Colgate. The Black Knights first victory of 2005-06 will be the program’s 1,000th career win. Army is 13th all-time in career wins.

Bentley: Bentley’s 3-1 win on Friday snapped a seven game winless streak against Air Force and moved the all-time series to 6-2-1 in favor of Air Force . The win on Friday marked the first time that Bentley has opened the season with a win since moving to Division I, the last time Bentley opened with a win was 1997-98 when the Falcons beat Potsdam State 7-4 . It is also only the second time Bentley has not lost its opening game at the DI level, Bentley tied Air Force 2-2 last year. The Bentley Air Force matchup was the third straight season that the two teams met in the Q-Cup first round . Saturday night marked the second straight year that Bentley played Quinnipiac in the Q-Cup final . Senior defenseman Brendan McCartin was named to the Q-Cup All-Tournament team.

Canisius: Canisius played the USA Under-18 National Team for the third time in the past two seasons. Four straight goals in the second period helped Team USA to a 5-2 victory over visiting Canisius in an exhibition contest Saturday evening at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. Freshman netminder Ryan Hatch posted 47 saves in the loss, robbing Team USA of certain goals on several occasions.

Connecticut: In the Huskies 4-4 tie against Union, it is only the second time in the program’s history that UConn started the season off in a tie. The last time it happened was the 2001-02 season when the Huskies tied Iona college, 4-4.

Holy Cross: Senior co-captain Tyler McGregor scored a hat trick in the 6-2 exhibition win over the Royal Military College (10/14/05). Senior co-captain Pierre Napert-Frenette enters the season with 93 career points at Holy Cross leaving him seven shy of becoming the 35th Crusader to join the 100 point club. Holy Cross has split the last two meetings between Massachusetts with the Minutemen winning a 2-1 decision (10/24/03) and the Crusaders taking a 3-2 overtime victory (1/31/95).

Mercyhurst: Mercyhurst received goals from seven different players and points from 13 in routing Brock 8-0 in an exhibition game Friday night before nearly 600 fans at the Ice Center. Junior goaltender Jordan Wakefield, who missed all of last season because of injury, became the third different goaltender to start for Mercyhurst this season. He was credited with 27 saves. Mercyhurst improved to 5-0-2 lifetime against Brock. The Lakers will now rest for two weeks before opening their Atlantic Hockey Association (AHA) season with a pair of games against UConn Friday and Saturday, October 28 and 29. In their last meeting in March, the Lakers rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat the Huskies 7-4 at the Ice Center in an Atlantic Hockey quarterfinal game. Mercyhurst went on to edge both Holy Cross and Quinnipiac to advance to the NCAA playoffs for the third time in the last five years. The 2004-05 team was honored with championship rings before Friday’s game with the Badgers.

Sacred Heart: The Pioneers lost their regular season opener, falling 5-2 to Union Friday night in Schenectady, NY. Despite being outplayed through the first two periods, the Pioneers still had a chance in the third, keeping the pressure on by outshooting Union 14-8 in the final stanza. Seniors Bernie Chimel and Chris Connerty both netted their first goals of the season for the Pioneers in the loss. Senior Rocco Molinaro and juniors Todd Spencer and Pierre Luc-O’Brien each picked up assists in the game. Junior Jason Smith made 33 saves in goal for the Pioneers in the losing effort. The Pioneers are off this weekend and will open their Atlantic Hockey schedule next Friday and Saturday night (10/28 and 10/29) at home against Canisius.
