Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week
Dave Borrelli - Mercyhurst
Senior, Forward, Sault Ste. Marie, ONT
Borrelli scored five goals and added two assists in Mercyhurst’s two-game sweep of Bentley. He scored a power play goal and an empty net in Friday’s 7-4 win. He then had his first career hat trick plus two assists in Saturday’s 10-5 victory. He scored twice in Saturday’s 6-goal first period explosion, both power play and the last the game-winner, then closed the scoring with a shorthanded marker with 8 minutes left in the third. His big weekend moved him into third place on the team in points (20). He’s now tied for the team lead in power play goals (5) and game-winners (2).

Tom Fenton - American International
Freshman, Goaltender, Sarnia, ONT
Picked up his first collegiate victory by making 29 saves in a 5-2 win at Connecticut. Stopped 60 of 64 shots faced over the weekend for a .938 save percentage.

Bryan Jurynec, American International (So., F,
Orland Park, Ill.) - Notched a goal and two assists in a 5-2 win
over Connecticut.
Luke Flicek, Army (Sr., F, Burnsville, Minn.) -
Flicek assisted on Army’s first goal of the night and scored
the game-winner late in the second period, lifting the Black
Knights to a 2-1 victory over visiting Sacred Heart Sunday
afternoon. Flicek deflected a shot from the point past Jason Smith
of Sacred Heart. He recorded his third multi-point game of the
year, tying a season-high with two points.
Anthony Canzoneri, Bentley (Fr., F, Homer Glenn,
Ill.) - Canzoneri scored a pair of goals and added an assist in the
weekend series with Mercyhurst. He scored a goal on Friday night
and then added an assist on Saturday. He leads the team with 14
points and 10 assists this season.
Jeff Gumaer, Bentley (Fr., F, St. Louis, Mo.) -
Gumaer had a pair of goals and an assist at Mercyhurst on Saturday
night. He now has five goals (tied for the team lead) and four
assists.
Andre Dawe, Canisius (Sr., F, Kitchener, ONT) -
The senior forward from Kitchener, Ont. scored a goal in each game
to extend his point streak to six games, which ties for the longest
on the team this season. Dawe now has five goals on the year.
Ben Conway, Holy Cross (Sr., G, South Hadley, Mass.) -
Conway made 24 saves and allowed only one goal in the 5-1 win at
Canisius on Saturday night. He is now 3-1-0 on the season.
Tyler McGregor, Holy Cross (Sr., F, Ajax, ONT) -
McGregor had three points on the weekend with two goals and an
assist. On Friday night, he dished out an assist in the 4-2 win at
Canisius, while on Saturday night he scored two goals in 5-1 win
over the Golden Griffins. McGregor’s three points gives him
100 (55 goals and 45 assists) for his career.
Tony Quesada, Holy Cross (Sr., G, South Freeport,
Maine) - Quesada stopped 31 shots in the 4-2 win over Canisius on
Friday night. With the win Quesada is now 6-2-1 on the year.
Chris Trafford, Mercyhurst (Fr., F, Kinburn, ONT)
- Trafford had a pair of goals and an assist in the two games
against Bentley. He assisted on the first of two empty net goals
Friday and scored two of Mercyhurst’s five power play goals
Saturday, Mercyhurst’s second and ninth goals. Trafford now
has 12 points this season, the best among all Mercyhurst first-year
players.
Scott Marchesi, Sacred Heart (So. F, South
Portland, Maine) - Marchesi recored his first goals of the season
this week, scoring one each against RPI and Army. Friday against
RPI Marchesi scored his first goal of the year to give the Pioneers
a 2-1 lead early in the second period in a game they would go on to
win in overtime. Sunday versus Army Marchesi scored SHU’s
only goal on a tip in rebound. He now has two goals to go along
with five assists for a total of seven points on the year.
Bear Trapp, Sacred Heart (Fr. F, Regina, SASK) - Trapp continued his rookie season sucess with another strong offensive week, propelling the Pioneers to a 2-1 record. Tuesday night against Army Trapp assisted on the Pioneers first goal, and scored the game winning goal in the third period as Sacred Heart topped Army 4-2. Friday night. Trapp scored two goals in the Pioneers huge road win over RPI. One of Trapp’s goals was the game winner one minute into the overtime period. Trapp now has eight goals and eight assists. He has scored four game winning goals, making him the only Pioneer with multiple game winners.
Team Notes
American International: Tom Fenton (Sarnia, Ontario) picked up his first collegiate win in goal Friday against UConn. AIC has scored at least four goals in three games this season after reaching the mark just four times all of last season.
Army: The Black Knights held off Sacred Heart 2-1 Sunday afternoon to gain a split of a home-and-home series with the Pioneers. The win snapped a personal seven-game losing streak to Sacred Heart and avenged a loss to the Pioneers earlier in the week. SHU took the first game of the series on Tuesday evening, 4-2. Army is now 4-2-2 since beginning the year with seven consecutive losses. The Black Knights are 3-1 at home this year and will play 10 of their next 13 games at Tate Rink. Army’s only loss on home ice came at the hands of No. 13 Colgate.
Bentley: Bentley is 1-6-0 this season when allowing two or more power play goals in a game … the Falcons have allowed five power play goals in a game four times this year, all losses … Bentley has struggled on the road this year posting an 0-5-1 record to date … prior to this weekend, the last time Bentley scored at least four goals in consecutive games and lost was the 1999-2000 season with a 6-5 loss in overtime at AIC on Saturday Feb. 12 and then a 5-4 loss at Sacred Heart in the following contest on Friday Feb. 13 ... the ten goals Bentley allowed at Mercyhurst on Saturday night were the most since Bentley allowed ten goals to Mercyhurst in the semifinals of the 2003 MAAC Playoffs.
Connecticut: UConn’s junior goaltender, Scott Tomes, surpassed former netminder Jason Carey’s (2000-04) Division I saves record of 1616 on Nov. 19 against Canisius. Tomes made 38 saves in that game to establish a new record of 1661 saves for a Division I Connecticut goaltender. Tomes is also on the trail of Marc Senerchia (1997-00) for the program’s career wins record. UConn’s defense is getting offensive this season with four players on the top-25 defensemen list for points in the AHA. Junior B.J. Crum is leading the charge for the Huskies with eight points in 10 games to rank fi fth on the AHA list. He has recorded three goals and five assists to rank fourth on the team with points. Following Crum is senior Ryan Palmer with four points. He has scored one goal and has assisted on three. Freshman Sean Erickson has made three assists this season for three points and fellow classmate Nick Schneider has two assists in six games to held round out the AHA’s top-25 point-scoring defensemen. UConn’s freshman scoring sensation, Chris Myhro, has been on fi re this season, leading the team in goals with six, ranking fourth in the league. The Minnesota native made his official debut in the Huskies’ fi rst game of the season against Union. Myhro scored the team’s second goal on the way to a 4-4 season-opening tie. For his efforts in that game he was named to the AHA Honor Roll for that week. He scored two goals in the team’s two-game series against Merrimack, scoring the Huskies’ lone goal in their loss and first goal in their following day victory. The freshman had two assists in one game the next weekend against Mercyhurst to add to his career points. His next goal came in the Huskies’ 4-1 victory over Holy Cross. The next weekend he recorded two goals and and assists in the team’s two-game series with Canisius. This past weekend Myhro scored again in the Huskies’ 5-2 loss to AIC on Friday night.
Canisius: Senior forward Andrew Dawe extended his goal scoring streak to three games and point streak to six games, which is tied for the longest stretch on the team this season. The Griffs scored first in Saturday night’s game against Holy Cross, the first time Canisius has done that since the Nov. 11 game at Bentley. Freshman goaltender Dan Giffin saw his first action since Oct. 29 at Sacred Heart.Canisius was swept at home for the first time since Jan. 14 and 15, 2005 when American International and Holy Cross beat the Griffs. Canisius’ winless streak against Holy Cross extended to 13 games (0-9-4). Junior forward Joey Coccimiglio saw his six-game point streak and four-game goal streak come to an end this weekend. The weekend’s games were the first time Coccimiglio didn’t score in a game he played in this season.
Holy Cross: Senior Tyler McGregor had three points on the weekend giving him 17 for the season and 100 (55 goals and 45 assists) for his career. He is the 36th Crusader to reach the 100 point club and the second this season as senior Pierre Napert-Frenette also reached that mark. McGregor had an assist on Friday night and netted two goals on Saturday night. Senior goaltender Tony Quesada made 31 saves to earn the victory in the 4-2 win over Canisius on Friday night to improve to 6-2-1 on the season. The win gives him 45 for his career tying the school-record set by Paul Pijanowski (1984-87). With the two wins at Canisius this past weekend, the Crusaders are a perfect 6-0-0 in road games this season.
Mercyhurst: Mercyhurst set a new program record for the most power play goals in consecutive games with ten against the Falcons. The prior mark was nine. All told, Mercyhurst scored 10 power play goals, a shorthanded goal, and two empty net markers of their 17 against Bentley. Mercyhurst moved from +1 in special teams’ play to +10. The Lakers lead the all-time series against Bentley 18-4-2. Junior defenseman Denis Kirstein scored his first goal of the season and third of his career with an empty net score Friday. Junior goaltender Mike Ella picked up his second assist of the season Friday. Mercyhurst will close the 2005 portion of the campaign Friday and Saturday with a home-and-home set with Canisius. Canisius is coached by former Mercyhurst assistant Dave Smith. The Lakers are 23-12-4 lifetime against Canisius, but went 0-2-1 last season. Both losses were one-goal.
Sacred Heart: The Pioneers are in the midst of a stretch of 6 games in 13 days leading into the holiday break. In their three games they posted a record of 2-1, including a home-and-home split with Army and a big road win at RPI Friday night. The win at RPI was the first overtime victory for Sacred Heart since February 4, 2005 when the Pioneers beat UConn. Freshman Bear Trapp scored the game winner for the Pioneers, his fourth deciding goal of the season. Tuesday night Trapp and Junior Pierre-Luc O’Brien each had a goal and an assist in the Pioneers 4-2 win over Army. Sunday Sacred Heart’s attack was shut down by the Black Knights as they fell 2-1. Sophomore Scott Marchesi scored his first two goals this week, one each against RPI and Army. O’Brien leads the Pioneers with 20 points, including eight goals and 12 assists. Sophomore Alexandre Parent has a team high 14 assists to go along with four goals for 18 points. The Pioneers play a home and home set with UConn this week before breaking for final exams. The teams meet in Milford on Thursday night and then will rematch in Storrs on Friday.
