The Atlantic Hockey Association announced its regular season award
winners and All-Conference teams at the second annual Atlantic
Hockey Tournament banquet on Thursday, March 16, held on the campus
of the College of the Holy Cross. Holy Cross forward Tyler McGregor
earned Player of the Year honors, while Sacred Heart freshman Bear
Trapp was honored with Rookie of the Year. Army mentor Brian Riley
collected his first Atlantic Hockey Coach of the Year Award.
McGregor, a native of Ajax, ONT, ended his senior season tying for the league lead in points scored with 43 points on 21 goals and 22 assists for the Crusaders. Overall, McGregor has 48 total points on 22 goals and 26 assists. Trapp potted 16 goals and added 27 assists for 43 points in his initial campaign. The Regina, SASK native netted seven game-winners and six goals on the power play for the Pioneers this season.
After being chosen at the start of the season to finish seventh in the preseason poll by the coaches in Atlantic Hockey, Riley led his squad to a fifth place finish and a chance to host a quarterfinal round contest, but fell one point short. The Black Knights ended the season with a 12-18-6 mark in Riley’s second season on the Army bench.
Holy Cross garnered three other individual awards selected by the leagues coaches, as Blair Bartlett was named the Best Defensive Forward, Rob Godfrey was honored with Best Defensive Defenseman and McGregor earned the Individual Sportsmanship Awards.
McGregor is joined on the Atlantic Hockey First Team with teammate Jon Landry on defense along with Merychurst’s Jamie Hunt. Hunt’s teammate Dave Borrelli earned First Team honors at forward as well as Sacred Heart’s Pierre-Luc O’Brien. The Pioneers’ netminder Jason Smith also garnered First Team honors. McGregor and O’Brien were also honored as First Team All-Conference selections last season.
Pierre Napert-Frenette of Holy Cross, Ben Cottreau of Mercyhurst and Alexandre Parent earned Second Team honors at forward, while Tim Manthey of Army and Josh Chase of Bentley are the defensive tandem. Army’s Brad Roberts and Holy Cross’ Tony Quesada round out the seven member second team as the goaltenders on the team.
Trapp leads seven individuals on the All-Rookie squad at forward, as Bentley’s Jeff Gumear and Anthony Canzoneri, along with Chris Trafford of Mercyhurst were the forwards. Defensemen Tim Manthey of Army and Sean Erickson of Connecticut join Dan Giffin of Canisius as the other members of the All-Rookie Team.
The 2006 Atlantic Hockey Championships will continue on Friday, March 17 as top-seeded Holy Cross will face sixth-seeded Connecticut in the first game at the Hart Center at 4:00 pm. In the other semifinal contest which is set to start at 7;30 pm, second-seeded Mercyhurst will face fourth-seeded Bentley. The semifinal winners will then take to the ice on Saturday, March 18 at 7:00 pm for the automatic bid into the NCAA Division I Ice Hockey Championships.
The Atlantic Hockey Association arose when nine institutions
joined together on June 30, 2003, to found a new Division-I
men’s ice hockey conference. The league included American
International College, Army, Bentley College, Canisius College, the
University of Connecticut, the College of the Holy Cross,
Mercyhurst College, Quinnipiac University, and Sacred Heart
University. Quinnipiac left at the start of the 2005-06 season, but
the Air Force Academy and Rochester Institute of Technology will
join the league beginning with the 2007-08 season.
