Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team Announced
Golden Griffins' Buetow Earns
Top-Scholar
WAKEFIELD, Mass. -- The most successful season on the ice for the student-athletes of the Atlantic Hockey Association now transfers over to the classroom. This year 101 student-athletes make up the third edition of the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic team for the 2005-06 academic year, with 31 student-athletes making their third appearance on the squad.
Canisius junior netminder Max Buetow earned the Atlantic Hockey Top Scholar-Athlete Award, posting a perfect 4.0 grade point average (GPA). Buetow, a native of Denver, Colo., majors in English at Canisius, and made 14 appearances in net for the Griffs'. Buetow becomes the second netminder to collect the Top Scholar-Athlete Award while posting a 4.0 GPA.
Buetow is joined on the Academic All-Star Team by teammate Josh Henry. Henry, a senior from Erie, Penn. was one of three forwards as sophomore Nick Kary of Sacred Heart and fellow sophomore Bryce Hollweg of Army join Henry on the frontline. The defensive tandem are freshman Eric Griffin of American International and senior Preston Briggs of Mercyhurst. The Academic All-Star Team consists of the top GPA's at each position. Kary, who was last year's Top Scholar-Athlete and Briggs are the only two holdovers from last year's Academic All-Star Team.
Of the 101 student-athletes that were recognized as member of the All-Academic Team this season, 51 were members of the 2004-05 squad, and 24 were freshman. Mercyhurst has the most representation of student-athletes on the list with a total of 16 players, and have eight that are three-time members. Sacred Heart had the highest number of returning student-athletes this season on the All-Academic Team, as 12 skaters received recognition last season.
A quartet of student-athletes named to the All-Academic Team were named to the First Team All-Atlantic Hockey this past season. Senior Tyler McGergor of Holy Cross also garnered Player of the Year Award, as well as being named to the First Team All-Conference. The others are juniors Jamie Hunt (Mercyhurst), Pierre-Luc O'Brien and Jason Smith, both of Sacred Heart. In addition there are five members of the Second Team All-Atlantic Hockey on the All-Academic Team. Senior Brad Roberts of Army, senior Josh Chase of Bentley, seniors Pierre Napert-Frenette and Tony Quesada of Holy Cross and sophomore Alexandre Parent of Sacred Heart.
To qualify for the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team an individual must post a 3.0 grade point average or higher in each of the two academic periods during which his team was actively competing. Atlantic Hockey's Top Scholar Athlete is an award given annually to the player who achieves the highest grade point average over the course of the two academic semesters of competition.
The Atlantic Hockey Association was formed when nine institutions joined together in 2003, to found a new Division-I men's ice hockey conference. The league currently consists of ten members: Air Force Academy, American International College, Army, Bentley College, Canisius College, the University of Connecticut, the College of the Holy Cross, Mercyhurst College, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Sacred Heart University.
