WORCESTER, Mass. – Sophomore defenseman Jaye Judd scored 58 secondss into the second overtime to lift fourth-seeded Bentley College to a dramatic 3-2 win over second-seeded Mercyhurst in the Atlantic Hockey Semifinals Friday night at the Hart Center in Worcester, Mass. It is the second consecutive game that Bentley has won in double overtime and the Falcons advance to take on Holy Cross in the Atlantic Hockey Championship game Saturday night at 7:00 with an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament at stake.
After Tom Dickhudt (Woodbury, Minn./Ann Arbor Huron)shot wide to the short side of the Mercyhurst goal, Judd skated in and hit a first-time slap shot that caromed off freshman goaltender Tyler Small’s (Kincardine, Ontario) left shoulder and into the upper corner for the dramatic winner. It was a tough ending for Small, who set an Atlantic Hockey Tournament record with 53 saves. Ray Jean (Randolph, Maine/Gardiner HS) made 37 saves in goal for Bentley and held the nation’s top scoring offense to just two goals and blanked the nation’s most effective penalty kill on ten opportunities.
The first period started squarely on the side of the Lakers with the help of a pair of early Bentley minor penalties within the first six minutes of play. The Falcon defense stood tall shutting down the top ranked power play in the nation and turned the tide of play in the second half of the period. With the Falcons on the power play with eight minutes remaining in the opening period, Mercyhurst was very close to scoring the opening goal. Following a Bentley misplay Kyle Gourgon (Sittsville, Ontario) skated onto the puck in the neutral zone and sprung Kerry Bowman (Learnington, Ontario) in on a breakaway. Gourgon was unable to shoot past Bentley junior goaltender Ray Jean (Randolph, Maine/Gardiner HS), who made the stop on Gourgon’s shot with his stick.
Bentley had its best chance of the period a minute later through sophomore Paul Scalici (Bingham Farms, Mich./Cabrini HS). He broke into the Mercyhurst zone and collected the rebound off his original shot and rounded Tyler Small, but his effort hit the post and bounced out of danger. The Lakers almost scored again on a shorthanded opportunity for the second time minutes later when Ben Cottreau (Toronto, Ontario) and Dave Borrelli (Saulte Saint Marie, Ontario) skated in on a two-on-one. Cottreau gained the right side of the Bentley zone and then made a pass into the slot to Borrelli who one-timed a pass directly back to Cottreau, who bore down on Jean. Cottreau tried to beat Jean on his backhand as he cut in front of the net, but Jean was once again up to the challenge.
Bentley was fractions of an inch away from scoring 30 seconds into the second period. Freshman Jeff Gumaer (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves HS) gained the Mercyhurst zone and fired a wrist shot from the top of the slot that beat Mercyhurst goaltender Tyler Small (Kincardine, Ontario), but caromed off the inside of the left post and out of danger across the crease behind Small. The Falcons also had a five-on-three opportunity for 58 seconds with just over six minutes left in the period, but were unable to score on the resulting power plays.
Mercyhurst would score the opening goal of the game with 3:05 remaining in the period through junior defenseman Jamie Hunt (Calgary, Alberta). He had the puck behind the Bentley goal and tried a wrap around attempt and his initial attempt was denied by Jean, but kept with the rebound and jammed in home in a crowd of traffic in front of the goal.
The Falcons almost answered directly after the goal as freshman Anthony Canzoneri (Homer Gleen, Ill./Lockport Township HS) was played in alone on Small, but the freshman netminder was up to the moment making a nice save. Mercyhurst almost doubled the lead with a minute left in the second period on its fourth power play opportunity of the period. Borreilli received a diagonal cross-ice pass on the doorstep, but his effort was denied by a brilliant pad save by Jean.
Bentley tied the game 2:55 into the third period on the power play on Judd’s first goal of the game. The puck was cycled from the corner up to Murphy just inside the blue line and he hit a slap shot just under the cross bar that beat a screened Small, who was crouched low trying to see through traffic in front of the goal.
Junior forward Marc Zwicky (Basel, Switzerland) scored with 12:07 remaining in the third period breaking 1-1 deadlock as the Falcons rallied back to take a 2-1 lead. Freshman Tom Dickhudt skated into the left side of the Mercyhurst zone and danced past a pair of Laker defenders before seeing his shot saved by Tyler Small. The rebound was to the left of Small and Zwicky got to the loose puck and fired a turn around effort that snuck just inside the far post to put Bentley ahead 2-1.
Mercyhurst would even the game with 4:23 to play on just its fourth shot of the third period. Cottreau hit senior Scott Champagne (Cornwall, Ontario) will a pass on the doorstep and Champagne shot past an outstretched Jean and tie the game. Bentley almost won the game at the end of regulation on the power play. A wrist shot by Judd from the right point with 20 seconds remaining was deflected by traffic and went off the post. Seconds later Brendan McCartin (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff HS) got the puck on the doorstep, but a superb pad save by Small denied McCartin a dramatic game-winner. Through the end of regulation, Bentley held a 43-27 advantage in shots and has blanked Meryhurst on seven power play opportunities.
Mercyhurst had the better of the beginning of the 1st overtime aided by three power play opportunities, but their best opportunity of the period came while shotthanded. Scott Reynolds (Kerrobert, Sask.) chipped a pass behind the Bentley defense that played Bowman in on Jean, but Jean made a nice glove save on Bowman’s backhand opportunity. Then with seven minutes remaining in the first overtime Jamie Hunt hit a wicked slap shot from the top of the slot, but Jean made a great blocker save to keep Bentley alive.
Just before the end of the period Champagne was played in behind the Bentley defense, but he was off-balance as he was challenged by a Falcon defenseman and he shot was saved by Jean as the first overtime ended.
