Dave Borelli - Mercyhurst
Senior, Forward, Sault Ste. Marie, ONT
Borrelli had four goals and an assist for the Lakers in their sweep of Bentley. He scored the first and last (pp) goals of the game Friday and the final two goals of the game Saturday. He has a four-game scoring streak (5 goals and 2 assists). He leads the team with 22 goals and is tied for second in points with 40.
Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Week
Tyler Small - Mercyhurst
Freshman, Goaltender, Kincardine, ONT
Small stopped a combined 84 of 88 Bentley shots (.955) as the Lakers swept the Falcons by identical 5-2 scores. Small recorded his 9th and 10th career wins and improved his conference mark to 8-3.
Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week
Dan Giffin - Canisius
Freshman, Goaltender, Milton, ONT
Giffin split his starts at first-place Holy Cross. In Saturday
night’s 3-1 win, Giffin made 39 saves, and he has a save
percentage of at least .950 in six of his last nine starts. Giffin
has won four of his last five starts.
Weekly Honor Roll
Ryan Robin - American International (Jr., F,
Prince Albert, SASK) - Totaled three goals and two assists in a
1-1-1 week. Registered four points (2 goals, 2 assists) in a 7-5
win over Connecticut.
Jereme Tendler - American International (So. F,
Viceroy, SASK) - Registered two goals and an assist in a 7-5 win
over Connecticut.
Fred Coccimiglio - Canisius (Sr., F, Sault Ste.
Marie, ONT) - Coccimiglio scored the game-winner in the 3-1 victory
in Saturday night’s game. The game-winner was the second of
Coccimiglio’s career and gave the Griffs their first win over
the Crusaders since 2002.
Cole Koidahl - Connecticut (Jr., F, Minneapolis,
Minn.) - Koidahl recorded four goals and two assists in this
weekend’s final series match-up between UConn and American
International. On Saturday night, Koidhal helped to lead the
Huskies to their first victory in 2006 with two goals and two
assists. He scored his tow goals in the final period of the game
and assisted on the first and third goal. On Friday night, Koidahl
tallied two goals, both in the first period.
Brad Smith - Connecticut (So., G, Detroit, Mich.)
- Smith notched the Huskies’ first victory in 2006 with a 6-0
shutout of AIC on Saturday night. Smith made a total of 25 saves in
the game. On Friday night, Smith replaced Anderson in goal after
the first period. In his two periods between the pipes he made 18
saves and allowed only one goal.
Chris Uber - Connecticut (Sr., F, Ithaca, N.Y.) -
Uber was a driving force in the Huskies’ streak-snapping
victory on Saturday night. Uber dished out four assists on the
night. This brings his total numbers this season to 21 points on
six goals and 15 assists.
Tyler McGregor - Holy Cross (Sr., F, Ajax, ONT) -
McGregor had a four-point weekend with two goals and two assists.
In the 5-2 win over Canisius on Friday night, he scored two goals
and added an assist, while on Saturday he assisted on Holy
Cross’ lone goal. McGregor is on a nine game scoring streak
with six goals and 14 assists for 20 points.
Bobby Phillips - Mercyhurst (Fr., D, Carmel, Ind.) -
Phillips had two assists Saturday, his first points since November
4 at AIC and his first multiple-point game of his career. One of
his assists came on the game-winning goal in the second period.
Team Notes
American International: AIC has already eclipsed
last season’s win total. Sophomore Jereme Tendler (Viceroy,
Sask.) leads the Yellow Jackets with 12 goals and 10 assists for 22
points, two more than 2004-05 leading scorer Ron Miller accumulated
all of last season. The seven goals scored in Friday night’s
7-5 win over Connecticut were the most since an 8-3 win over the
Huskies on February 16, 2003.
Army: Army traveled north of the border for the
75th renewal of the oldest continuous international rivalry in
sports on Saturday. The Black Knights took on the Royal Military
College of Canada (RMC) in Kingston, Ontario, and battled the
Paladins to a 3-3 overtime tie … Army leads the overall
series 39-29-7 … the Black Knights are unbeaten in their
last four games against RMC (3-0-1) as the Class of 2006 graduates
with an unbeaten mark against their Canadian rivals … Bryce
Hollweg notched his second career goal against RMC in the contest
… Army steps back into conference play this weekend with a
two-game series against Connecticut at West Point’s Tate
Rink.
Bentley: After playing to a 3-3 tie with AIC
midweek and dropping a weekend series with Mercyhurst, Bentley is
0-6-3 in its last nine games ... The Falcons are now even on games
played with Army and trail the Black Knights by two points in the
Atlantic Hockey standings for the final home ice spot in the
Quarterfinals ... Mercyhurst scored at least five goals in each of
the four games against Bentley this season ... senior Ryan Mayhew
became just the second player in school history to net 30 career
goals at the Division I level with a goal on Friday night, he
trails fellow senior Paul Markarian by one goal in terms of
Division I goals ... Markarian and Josh Thompson became just the
fourth and fifth players in school history to appear in 120 career
games on Tuesday night, they now have both played in 122 career
games and are just three games short of tying the school record of
125. Josh Thompson became the sixth player to reach the 120 games
played mark on Saturday night ... The sixth and seventh players of
the season reached the 100 games played plateau on Friday night.
Brendan McCartin and Ryan Lessnau reached the century mark and
became the 20th and 21st players in school history to reach 100
games played ... Freshman Anthony Canzoneri is now tied for 13th in
terms of season scoring at the Division I level with his 23 points
(7-16-23) this season.
Canisius: Canisus closed its six-game, four-week
road trip with a split at Holy Cross. The Griffs have won four of
their last five games. The Griffs have seven road wins on the
season, the second most since the team went to the Division I level
for the 1998-99 season. The Blue and Gold defeated the Crusaders
for the first time in 15 matchups and won for the first time since
Jan. 18, 2002. Senior defenseman Tim Songin (Hamburg, N.Y.) and
junior forward Michael Cohen (Williamsville, N.Y.) led the Griffs
with three assists apiece on the weekend. Songin has tallied six
points in the last four games, the most in his career, and his
four-game point streak is also a career-best. Cohen has scored
eight points in his last five games, and his five-game point streak
ties his career best. Songin is one assist away from tying his
career high of nine while Cohen’s 28 points on the season is
a career best, and is the most for a Canisius player since 2001-02.
Freshman goaltender Dan Giffin (Milton, Ont.) stopped 39 shots in
Saturday night’s game and has at least 39 saves in three of
his last five starts, with the Griffs winning all three of those
games. Senior forward Andrew Dawe (Kitchener, Ont.) scored his
career-best 11th goal of the year. Junior forward Joey Coccimiglio
(Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) also set a new career high, registering
his 18th point. Senior forward Fred Coccimiglio (Sault Ste. Marie,
Ont.) recorded the second game-winning goal of his career. Junior
forward Billy Irish-Baker (Clarence, N.Y.) tallied two points in
Saturday night’s game and scored his first goal since Dec.
29, 2005, against UMass Lowell. The Canisius power play scored four
goals on the weekend against a Holy Cross penalty kill that ranked
second nationally coming into the weekend. In its last four games,
the power play has scored seven goals in its last 21 opportunities.
The Canisius penalty kill also continued its success, killing 12 of
14 power plays against the Crusaders and allowed power play goals
in consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 9 and 10. The
Griffs have killed 68 of their opponents’ last 71 power
plays.
Holy Cross: With 20 wins so far this season, the
Crusaders are approaching the school single season record for wins
(22) and have reached the 20 win mark for the fifth time in school
history. Both the 1998-99 and 2003-04 teams had 22 victories. Holy
Cross had 21 wins in the 1979-80 season and 20 wins in the 1982-83
season. Senior Tyler McGregor is on a nine-game scoring streak with
six goals and 14 assists for 20 points. He had a four-point weekend
with two goals and two assists. In the 5-2 win over Canisius on
Friday night, he scored two goals and added an assist, while on
Saturday he assisted on Holy Cross’ lone goal. McGregor leads
the team in scoring with 21 goals and 20 assists for 41 points. His
.78 goals per game ranks him third in the country. McGregor and
senior Pierre Napert-Frenette each have 124 career points which
ties them with Mike Robben (1979-83) for 22nd all-time at Holy
Cross. Napert-Frenette’s 135 games played ties him with Greg
Kealey (2000-04) for fourth all-time. The record is 138 by Tim
Coskren (2000-04). Senior goaltender Tony Quesada made 22 saves in
the 5-2 win over Canisius on Friday night. He is now 15-3-1 on the
season and his .816 winning percentage is second in the nation. The
Crusaders have won nine games in a row when Quesada has been in
net. Quesada currently owns the Holy Cross all-time records for
career save percentage (.914) and career wins (54), while he is
tied for first all-time in goals against average (2.51). The
Crusaders enter this weekend with an 11-2 record on their
opponent’s home ice this season. Holy Cross’ .732
winning percentage ranks third in the nation.
Mercyhurst: Both junior winger Scott Champagne and
senior captain Scott Reynolds reached the 100 career point plateau
Friday. Champagne’s three assists gave him 102 career markers
at game’s end while Reynolds’ lone assist gave him 100
even. Champagne had two assists and Reynolds one the next night.
Senior Dave Borrelli (5 goals, 2 assists) and sophomore Ben
Cottreau (4 goals, 3 assists) have four-game scoring streaks.
Freshman defenseman Bobby Phillips had two assists Saturday, his
first points since November 4 at AIC and his first multiple-point
game of his career. Freshman winger Brett Robinson’s
game-winning goal Saturday was the first of his career. The Lakers
won all four games against the Falcons this season (combined score
27-13) and now lead 20-4-2 all-time. #1 Holy Cross (33 points)
comes to Erie next weekend with first-place in Atlantic Hockey on
the line. The Lakers have 32 points. Both have played the same
number of conference games. The teams split two games last November
in Worcester, Mass. The Crusaders won 10-3 before Mercyhurst
prevailed 4-3 the second night. The Lakers lead the all-time series
14-6-1.
Sacred Heart: Sacred Heart had the weekend off for
the first time since December 29-30. Junior Pierre-Luc
O’Brien leads the team in scoring with 37 points including 15
goals and 22 assists. Junior goaltender Jason Smith is 13th best in
the country in goals against average with a 2.14 mark. His .932
save percentage ranks him fifth in the country in that category.
The Pioneers play a home and home series with American
International this weekend. The opener is Friday night in Milford
with the rematch in Springfield on Saturday night.
