Canisius Hockey Signs Two

Coach Dave Smith gets players from Ontario and Washington.

Canisius College hockey coach Dave Smith announced today that David Kostuch (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and Jason Weeks (Seattle, Wash.) have signed National Letters of Intent to attend Canisius beginning with the 2006-07 season.

“We are excited to add two very competitive, skilled players to the Griffs,” Canisius hockey coach Dave Smith said. “Both David and Jason have the ability to put the puck in the net.”

A 5-foot-11, 175-pound center from the Markham Waxers of the Ontario Provincial Junior “A” Hockey League, Kostuch currently is tied for ninth in the league with 41 points with 19 goals and 22 assists. The Waxers are in first place in the south division of the OPJHL, a league that four current Griffs last played in before donning the Blue and Gold.

“David is excellent around the net and competes all the time, both necessary ingredients for success at the NCAA level,” Smith said. “He brings a passion for the game that will undoubtedly add to our overall environment.”

Weeks, a member of the Texarkana Bandits in the North American Hockey League, is a 5-foot-10, 185-pound forward and has 16 points (10 goals, six assists) in 19 games so far this year for the first-place Bandits. Weeks had 43 points (19 goals, 24 assists) in 47 games last season, which he split between Texarkana and the NAHL’s Cleveland Barons. Current Canisius players Matt and Mike Ruberto played with the Cleveland Barons before coming to Buffalo while seven current Griffs last played in the NAHL. Weeks is also the first player to sign with the Canisius hockey team from the state of Washington.

“Jason is a fiery competitor who can really skate and will add offense to our lineup immediately,” Smith said. “He played on a line with current Griff Mike Ruberto in Cleveland, and Mike led the league in scoring, so we hope to reunite that chemistry in Buffalo.”

Canisius returns to the ice on Dec. 2 when Holy Cross comes to the Buffalo State Sports Arena for a weekend series with faceoff set for 7 p.m. each night.
