Team Notes
Army: The Black Knights picked up their first league win with a 2-1 decision at Connecticut … it marked just the second time since 1979 that Army defeated the Huskies in Storrs, Conn. … Playing its first eight games in the league on the road, the Black Knights finally broke through against UConn … Army scored two goals in the first period and made it stand the rest of the way … the Cadets had been outscored 12-4 in the first period entering Saturday’s matinee at Freitas Ice Forum.
Bentley: Bentley was off for the holiday
weekend and hits the road this upcoming weekend for the first time
in almost a month (the last road game was a 1-1 tie with Sacred
Heart on November 4) ... Bentley was solid in November posting a
3-1-2 record for the month, it was the best month that the Falcons
have complied at the Division I level and the best month overall
for the program since November of 1998 when the Falcons went 5-2-0
in the second month of their transition season to Division I with
wins over Mercyhurst (2), Framingham State, Potsdam State and
Babson.
Connecticut: In the month of November, five Huskies have
really stepped it up on offense. Junior Cole Koidahl has had a hand
in six of the team’s 16 goal scored this month. Koidahl leads
the team in points so far this season with 13, 10 of which have
come in conference play. Freshman standout Chris Myhro has also
been an influence on offense, contributing his efforts on five of
the Huskies’ goals in November. Also adding helping to score
four Husky goals this month was junior co-captain Matt Scherer.
UConn’s defense is also getting offensive. Junior B.J. Crum
has helped the Huskies tally five of their 16 goals this month
while senior Ryan Palmer has contributed to four. The Huskies have
improved since this time last season. At the end of November in
2004, the Huskies had a record of 2-8-1. This season, the Huskies
stand at 3-6-1 at the end of the month.
Canisius: Head coach Dave Smith announced that
David Kostuch (Richmond Hill, Ont.) and Jason Weeks (Seattle,
Wash.) have signed National Letters of Intent to attend Canisius
beginning with the 2006-07 season. Kostuch curently plays for the
Markham Waxers of the Ontario Provincial Junior "A" hockey League,
while Weeks is a member of the Texarkana Bandits of the North
American Hockey League. Weeks is also the first player to sign with
the Canisius hockey team from the state of Washington.
Holy Cross: Junior defenseman Jon Landry earned
all-tournament honors at the Rensselaer Holiday Hockey Tournament.
He recorded three assists, including two in the 3-2 win over RPI.
He is currently tied for third on the team in scoring with nine
points as he has one goal and eight assists. Senior goaltender Tony
Quesada made 33 saves to earn the victory in the 3-2 win over
Rensselaer on Friday night. The win gives him 44 for his career and
he is just one win away from tying Paul Pijanowski’s
school-record of 45 (1984-87). The Crusaders’ 3-2 win over
Rensselaer marked the first time they have defeated the Engineers
as the all-time series is now 1-4-0. The championship game of the
RPI Tournament against Nebraska-Omaha was the first ever between
the two schools.
Mercyhurst: Mercyhurst has now dropped three straight, all against non-conference, first-time opponents, but all very competitive contests. Mercyhurst and Yale were tied at 3 midway in the third Tuesday before the Bulldogs scored the last three goals of the game. Ditto game one with Ferris State Friday as the Bulldogs broke a 3-3 third period stalemate with the last three tallies, including an empty net. Mercyhurst led 4-3 over FSU Saturday but the Bulldogs scored twice in the final 6.5 minutes. Junior goaltender Jordan Wakefield, who relieved freshman Tyler Small to start the second period Saturday, helped fuel a Lakers’ comeback by stopping 33 of 35 shots in the final forty minutes. Junior forward Scott Champagne had an assist Tuesday at Yale, a pair of goals Friday and an assist Saturday to stretch his scoring streak to 32 games, a program record. He and former All-America Scott Burfoot shared the mark of 29 games until Champagne eclipsed it on Tuesday. Save for a late January exhibition game, the Lakers have nothing but conference games remaining on the schedule. Bentley visits for a pair next weekend. Although Mercyhurst leads the all-tome series 12-4-2, the teams went 1-1-1 last season and played to a 4-4 tie in the only contest at the Ice Center.
Sacred Heart: The Pioneers capped off the holiday weekend by beating RIT 8-5 in Milford on Sunday. Bernie Chmiel had four points and Pierre-Luc O’Brien and Alexandre Parent each had two goals. Tuesday night the teams face-off in Milford and Sunday afternoon SHU makes the trip to West Point. In between the Pioneers will travel to Troy, NY for a non-conference game against RPI Friday night.
