Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week

Pierre-Luc O'Brien - Sacred Heart 

Junior, Forward, Nicolet, QUE

O’Brien led the Pioneers offense in a 5-1 win over Brown in the opening round of the Providence Tournament, scoring two goals and adding two assists. O’Brien capped off a three goal Pioneer first period with a goal as time expired, then opened the scoring in the third period, finishing off a give-and-go rush. For his perfomance, O’Brien was named to the All-Tournament team. O’Brien has now regained the team lead in goal scoring with 10 goals to go along with 16 assists for a team high 26 points.

Bear Trapp - Sacred Heart

Freshman, Forward, Regina, SASK

Trapp had an assist on four of Sacred Heart’s five goals against Brown in the opening round of the Providence Tournament. His best helper came on the Pioneers fourth goal early in the third period when he and Pierre-Luc O’Brien executed a perfect give-and-go rush up the ice that ended in a goal. Trapp is now second on the team in scoring, netting nine goals and adding 13 assists for a total of 22 points on the season.

Weekly Honor Roll

Chris Angelo, Canisius (Sr., F, Depew, N.Y.) - Angelo had a goal and an assist in the game against UMass Lowell in the opening game of the Dodge Holiday Classic. His goal and assist gave Angelo new career highs in goals (4), assists (3) and points (7).


Dan Giffin, Canisius (Fr., G, Milton, ONT) - Giffin stopped 33 of the 34 shots he faced against Union. He made a number of spectacular saves to keep the Griffs in the game and prevent Union from increasing its lead.


James Sixsmith, Holy Cross (Jr., F, Alexandria, Va.) - Sixsmith scored two goals in the 4-2 win over RPI at the Ohio Hockey Classic and earned a spot on the all-tournament team. He now has four goals on the season. His first goal gave the Crusaders a 1-0 lead just a minute into the game, while he added a shorthanded empty net goal to clinch the victory. Sixsmith has now scored five goals in three games against RPI in his career, including two last year in the 8-4 lost at RPI (2/5/05) and one this season in the 3-2 win.

Team Notes

Canisius: Canisius dropped both of its games in the Dodge Holiday Classic, hosted by the University of Minnesota at the Mariucci Arena. The Griffs lost on Dec. 29 to UMass Lowell 5-4 and dropped the third-place game on Dec. 30 to Union 2-0. The two games were the first in the state of Minnesota for the Canisius program. The loss to UMass Lowell was the third straight by one goal for the Griffs, which last happened Feb. 28-March 15, 2003. The 12 shots against Union were the fewest for the Griffs since recording 10 at No. 1 North Dakota Dec. 13, 2002. Canisius killed nine penalty kills against Union, which was the most since Canisius killed nine against Niagara Oct. 14. Canisius is on a six-game losing streak for the first time since Oct. 11-26, 2002 and had its first winless month since October 2003. Freshmen John Patera (Edina, Minn.) and Tommy Flikeid (Lakeville, Minn.) got the start both nights for games played in their home states.

Holy Cross: Junior James Sixsmith scored two goals in the 4-2 win over RPI, giving him four for the season. His performance earned him a spot on the Ohio Hockey Classic All-Tournament Team. He has now scored five goals in three games against RPI in his career, including two last year in the 8-4 lost at RPI (2/5/05) and one this season in the 3-2 win (11/25). The Crusaders are now 2-4-0 all-time against RPI, including a 3-2 victory earlier this season on Nov. 25, at the RPI Holiday Tournament. Senior goalie Ben Conway made a season high 39 saves to earn the win over RPI. He is now 4-1-0 on the season. The Ohio State game marked the first ever meeting between the two teams. Senior goaltender Tony Quesada made a season best 40 saves in the Ohio State game.

Mercyhurst: Mercyhurst starts the New Year with a pair of games at Army. The Lakers lead the all-time series 13-2-0. Friday night’s game is the CSTV Game of the Week. The Lakers have the #1 scoring offense in Division I (4.65) and the #2 power play (24.4). Individually, junior defenseman Jamie Hunt is second in all of Division I in points-per-game (1.80) but first among defensemen. Junior forward Scott Champagne, who had a club-record 35-game scoring streak stopped at Canisius December 10, is fourth (1.65) and senior winger Dave Borrelli sits in 5th place at 1.64. Mercyhurst scored 30 power play goals and five shorthanded markers in its first 17 games and is +11 in special teams’ play. The Lakers have scored at least one power play goal in ten straight games and in 15 of their last 17.

Sacred Heart: The Pioneers took home runner-up honors in the Providence College Hockey Holiday Classic Dec. 21-22. Sacred Heart toppled ECAC foe Brown 5-1 in the opening game before falling to host Providence in the championship game. In the first game junior Pierre-Luc O’Brien had two goals and two assists and Bear Trapp added four assists Goaltender Jason Smith made 28 saves for the victory. Freshmen Kyle Tyll and Dave Grimson each scored the first goal of their career as well. In the championship, the Pioneers played tough for two periods before fading in the third. Seniors Chris Connerty and Erik Roos scored the Pioneer goals. O’Brien has now regained the team lead in goal scoring with 10 goals to go along with 16 assists for a team high 26 points.Trapp is now second on the team in scoring, netting nine goals and adding 13 assists for a total of 22 points on the season. Smith lowered his goals against average to 2.23. Sacred Heart returns to the ice January 3rd when they visit Bentley.
