Team Notes
American International: Over AIC’s last
six Atlantic Hockey games freshman goalie Tom Fenton (Sarnia,
Ontario) has posted a .948 save percentage and a 1.80 goals-against
average while allowing no more than two goals in any game. The
Yellow Jacket penalty kill unit has also been impressive over that
span, allowing opponents to convert just one of 37 man-advantage
opportunities, good for a .973 penalty kill. Meanwhile, AIC has
scored a power play goal in each of the last four games and also
has a pair of shorthanded goals. Senior Jeff Valdes (Falmouth,
Mass.) played in his 100th career game Thursday at Army, while
classmate Andy Walbert (Ford City, Pa.) played in his 100th contest
Saturday against Bentley. The Yellow Jackets are unbeaten (1-0-2)
in their last three road games.
Army: The Black Knights finished off an unbeaten
week with a 2-1 victory over Sacred Heart on Sunday and a 2-2
overtime tie against American International College on Thursday.
The win and tie leave Army at 4-2-3 since beginning the year with
seven consecutive losses. It is the best turnaround in the NCAA
this winter among teams that began 2005-06 campaign with at least
six straight losses. Army also improved to 3-1-1 inside the
friendly confines of Tate Rink. The Black Knights will play 8 of 9
games in January at home. The Black Knights’ win over
visiting Sacred Heart last Sunday ended a personal seven-game skid
to the Pioneers in the overall series. Army opens the second half
of its schedule at the UConn/Toyota Classic hosted by Connecticut.
The Black Knights and Huskies meet in a league contest in the first
round of the annual tournament on Dec. 29.
Bentley: Bentley was carried by its first-year players in
Saturday’s win over AIC. Junior transfer Ray Jean stopped 28
of AIC’s 29 shots on goals, while fellow junior transfer Marc
Zwicky assisted on the game-winner. Bentley two goals came from a
pair of freshmen (Anthony Canzoneri and Jeff Gumaer), while the
other Bentley assist on the evening was also tallied by a freshman
(Tom Dickhudt) … Freshman have scored six of Bentley’s
last seven goals (Gumaer with three, Canzoneri with two and Dain
Prewitt with one) … Cazoneri leads the Falcons with 10
assists and 15 points, while Gumaer has a team high six goals
… Bentley is off until Jan. 3 when Sacred Heart visits the
J.A.R. … Bentley is just 2-5-1 away from the J.A.R., but is
2-0-1 away from home when the Falcons don’t stay in a hotel
the night before the game and 0-5-0 when they do stay in a hotel
the previous night.
Connecticut: On Thursday, Dec. 8, head coach Bruce
Marshall recorded his 250th career win as the Huskies defeated
Sacred Heart, 2-1. He is the winningest coach in the
program’s history. Also this weekend the Huskies extended
their winning streak to three games with a series sweep of Sacred
Heart, the number three team in the league.
Canisius: Senior forward Andrew Dawe (Kitchener,
Ont.) extended his goal streak to four games and point streak to
seven games with two goals in Friday night’s game. The
seven-game streak was the longest by a Canisius player since Chris
Duggan closed his career with a 15-game streak during the 2001-02
season. Dawe saw his streak come to an end in Saturday’s
game. Dawe’s two goals tied his career high while junior
forward Michael Cohen (Williamsville, N.Y.) also matched his career
high with three assists in Friday night’s game. The Griffs
are on a four-game losing streak for the first time since Nov.
4-Nov. 17, 2000. Mercyhurst ended Canisius’ three-game
unbeaten streak over the Lakers. Canisius lost in overtime for the
first time in four contests this season and for the first time
since Nov. 12, 2003 (3-2 loss against Sacred Heart). Friday
night’s 5-4 loss was the highest scoring overtime loss for
Canisius since a 6-5 overtime defeat at Sacred Heart Feb. 9, 2002.
The 81 penalty minutes accumulated by Canisius in Saturday
night’s game was the most since the Griffs had 91 against
Sacred Heart Jan. 20, 2001.
Mercyhurst: Mercyhurst now leads the all-time
series against Canisius 25-12-4. The two teams combined for 215
minutes in penalties in the two games (127 to Canisius), including
129 in Saturday’s contest. The Lakers brought the #1 offense
(4.67) and #3 power play (24.8) in Division I into the weekend.
Mercyhurst was 3 of 14 with the man advantage in the two games.
Junior Scott Champagne’s 35 game scoring streak, a program
record, came to an end Saturday in Buffalo. Meanwhile seniors Dave
Borrelli and Scott Reynolds and freshman Chris Trafford extended
their scoring streaks to eight games. The Lakers are off now until
January 6 and 7 when they visit Army.
Sacred Heart: The Pioneers dropped a pair of games
to Connecticut over the weeked, losing 2-1 in Milford on Thursday
and dropping the back end 3-2 Friday night in Storrs. Senior Rocco
Molinaro, sophomore Alexandre Parent and freshman Bear Trapp scored
the Pioneer goals in the series. The Pioneers offense has stuggled
as of late, scoring just four goals in the last three games.

starting 14 of the Pioneers 15 games. Trapp now leads the Pioneers
in goal scoring with nine goals to go along with eight assists for
17 points. Junior Pierre-Luc O’Brien has a team high 22
points, including eight goals and 14 assists. Sophomore Alexandre
Parent also has a team high 14 assists to go along with five goals
for 19 points. Sacred Heart is now in the middle of a stretch where
they wil play 8 of 9 games away from home The Pioneers are off
until December 21st when they open play in the Providence Holiday
Tournament against Brown. Sacred Heart will face either Colgate or
