Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week

Mike Ruberto, Canisius (Sophomore, F, Stoney Creek, ONT) - Scored 2 goals, added 3 assists for 5 points and a +3 rating. Career-high in goals, assists and points. Led a line that scored five goals and accounted for eight assists for 13 points in a 6-4 Canisius win over Robert Morris.

Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Week

Tyler Small, Mercyhurst (Freshman, Kincardine, ONT) - Small made his collegiate debut Saturday and stopped 41 Michigan Tech shots in a 5-2 win. He denied 13 of 14 in the first, 17 of 18 in the second, and all eleven in the third as the Lakers beat a WCHA opponent for the first time in history.

Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week

Dan Giffin, Canisius (Goaltender, Milton, ONT) - Posted 38 saves, including 19 in the third period, to earn first collegiate victory in Griffs’ 6-4 win over Robert Morris.

Weekly Honor Roll

Scott Champagne, Mercyhurst (Junior, F, Cornwall, ONT) - Champagne stretched his scoring streak to 21 games dating to last season with a pair of power play goals and two assists at Michigan Tech. He scored the first goal of the game in Friday’s 5-2 loss and assisted on Mercyhurst’s second score in the first period. He assisted on Saturday’s game-winner in the middle period and added a late power play goal in the third. Champagne had two of the three Mercyhurst PPG in the two games.

Dave Borelli, Mercyhurst (Senior, F, Sault Ste. Marie, ONT) - Scored a goal and added three assists for the Lakers in their weekend series with Michigan Tech. His lone goal of the weekend was the game-winner for Mercyhurst’s 5-2 win Saturday night. Two of his three assists also came in the victory on Saturday.

Weekly Notes

Atlantic Hockey: With Mercyhurst’s and Canisius’ victories this past weekend, Atlantic Hockey is 2-0-0 in the Commissioners’ Cup. The Commissioners’ Cup is a season long competition between the six Division I Ice Hockey Conferences. Mercyhurst and Holy Cross are receiving votes in both the USCHO and USA Today/American Hockey Magazine Men’s College Hockey Poll.

Canisius: In the Griffs’ 6-4 win over Robert Morris, linemates Mike Ruberto, Joel Kitchen and Michael Cohen all posted career-highs on the offensive charts. Ruberto set career-highs in points (5), goals (2) and assists (3). Kitchen set career-highs in all three categories with two goals and two assists for four points, while Cohen set career marks for assists (3) and points (4).

Freshman goaltender Dan Giffin posted 38 saves, including 19 in the decisive third period, to lead the Griffs to the 6-4 win. During the first intermission, former Canisius goalie Chris Collins won a brand new 2006 Pontiac G6 in a shoot-out promotion run by Robert Morris University. Collins rifled a puck into a small hole from the red line to win the vehicle and send the crowd into a frenzy. Collins was in attendance to see his old teammates defeat the host Colonials.

Mercyhurst: Mercyhurst’s 5-2 win at Michigan Tech Saturday was its first-ever against a WCHA opponent and its first non-conference success since a home win over Robert Morris last season. The Lakers held the Huskies to just one power play goal in 13 chances in the two games. Junior forward Scott Champagne (Cornwall, Ontario) extended his scoring streak to 21 games dating to last season. Senior forward Dave Borrelli (Sault Ste, Marie, Ontario) joined Champagne with a four-point weekend. Borrelli had the game-winner Saturday night. The Mercyhurst power play has now scored at least one time in 12 of its last 14 games dating to last season. Freshman forward Chris Trafford (Kinburn, Ontario) scored his first collegiate goal, unassisted, in Saturday’s game.
