American International: AIC snapped a seven-game winless streak against Bentley with a 2-1 win over the Falcons Saturday night. The string dated back to November, 2003. AIC, which has allowed two or fewer goals in nine of its last 11 games, has won each of its last three games at home, the longest home win streak at the Olympia Ice Center since the Yellow Jackets won five in a row at home during the 2000-01 season. Since December 1, American International has earned the third-most points in Atlantic Hockey play (9) trailing only Mercyhurst (12) and Sacred Heart (10) while tied with Army. The Yellow Jackets have earned at least one point in each of the last five weekends of conference play. AIC has already matched last season’s win total.

Connecticut: The University of Connecticut men’s hockey team dropped two heartbreaking games to Mercyhurst this weekend. In the first game, UConn came out strong with two goals in the first period, but Mercyhurst came out strong in the second to overpower the Husky defense and score four goals. A late goal by the Huskies in the second period would not be enough, and in the third, the Lakers notched two more to bring the score to 6-3. The second game on Friday proved to be much more of a tough game. The Lakers scored first within the initial minute of the game, but the Huskies roared back. The game went into overtime with a 3-3 tie and was not settled until 1:45 remained in the overtime period. The Huskies are currently on a six game slide and are set to face-off against Holy Cross on Jan. 19.

Canisius: Freshman Tommy Flikeid (Lakeville, Minn.) recorded the first assist of his career in Friday night’s game. Senior defenseman Brandon Irish-Baker (Clarence, N.Y.) continued his career offensive season when he notched his career-best ninth assist of the season. Canisius has killed the last 30 power plays, which is the most since the Griffs killed 36 straight last season. The Griffs haven’t allowed a power play goal during the past six games, which is longest stretch since a six-game stretch from Dec. 10, 1993 to Jan. 19, 1994. The Blue and Gold allowed the first goal in both weekend games. The Griffs have done that in the past five contests, 10 of the past 12, and 14 of 17. The Griffs matched a school record with their 10th straight loss, which also happened from Dec. 9, 1988 to Jan. 22, 1989.

Freshman Marty Dams scored his first collegiate goal at Army on Saturday night.

Mercyhurst: Mercyhurst is now 20-5-1 all time against UConn. The Mercyhurst/Army and Mercyhurst/UConn series in successive had similarities. A week ago Friday, Army scored on a penalty shot in a 5-0 win and then won in OT 3-2 the next night. Against UConn Friday, the Lakers scored the game-winning goal on a second period penalty shot (sophomore forward, Ryan Toomey) and defeated the Huskies in OT the next night. Saturday, the Pioneers scored one goal in each period to finish the sweep with a 3-1 win. Junior Pierre-Luc O’Brien scored two goals over the weekend and still leads the team in goal scoring with 13 goals to go along with 18 assists for a team high 31 points.
