Team Notes
American International: AIC snapped a seven-game winless streak against Bentley with a 2-1 win over the Falcons Saturday night. The string dated back to November, 2003. AIC, which has allowed two or fewer goals in nine of its last 11 games, has won each of its last three games at home, the longest home win streak at the Olympia Ice Center since the Yellow Jackets won five in a row at home during the 2000-01 season. Since December 1, American International has earned the third-most points in Atlantic Hockey play (9) trailing only Mercyhurst (12) and Sacred Heart (10) while tied with Army. The Yellow Jackets have earned at least one point in each of the last five weekends of conference play. AIC has already matched last season’s win total.
Army: The Black Knights earned a split with
second-place Holy Cross over the weekend, falling 4-3 on Friday
night, but rebounding for a come-from-behind 3-2 decision on
Saturday ... Army is unbeaten in 10 of its last 13 and has moved
into fifth place in the Atlantic Hockey standings on the strength
of two spectacular weekends ... coming off a sweep of
division-leader Mercyhurst the week before, Army split with
second-place Holy Cross ... the Black Knights earned six points
against the top two schools in the league ... sophomore center
Chris Bilec has two goals and two assists in Army’s last four
games, solidifying his spot on the second line ... classmate Chase
Podsiad brings a five-game scoring streak into Tuesday’s
contests against American International College ... Podsiad has six
points (2G, 4A) over that span ... the converted defenseman has
pointed in 8 of Army’s last 10 games, accounting for 10
points in that span ... sophomore winger, Lyle Gal, scored the
game-winning goal on Saturday with just 2:31 remaining in the game
... it was his first career goal in 26 games.
Bentley: Bentley’s 7-3 win on Friday night
marked the first three-game winning streak for the Falcon’s
in over three years - last three-game streak was December 11, 2002
to January 4, 2003 ... the seven Bentley goals Friday night were
the most since the Falcons scored seven also against AIC on Friday,
February 15, 2002 ... three Bentley players registered career-highs

points (six goals, 13 assists) and is currently 9th in Division I
in terms of points per game (0.95) and the only rookie averaging
more than a point per game (1.07) in Atlantic Hockey play ... the
freshman have been a key part of the Falcons’ offense in AHA
play as four Falcons rank in the top eight in terms of points for
rookies in league play: Canzoneri is tied for first (4-11-15), Jeff
Gumaer is tied for fifth (8-3-11), Dain Prewitt is seventh (3-7-10)
and Tom Dickhudt is tied for eighth (0-8-8) ... speaking of
influence Gumaer’s eight goals this season is a team-high and
leads all rookies in AHA play.
Connecticut: The University of Connecticut
men’s hockey team dropped two heartbreaking games to
Mercyhurst this weekend. In the first game, UConn came out strong
with two goals in the first period, but Mercyhurst came out strong
in the second to overpower the Husky defense and score four goals.
A late goal by the Huskies in the second period would not be
enough, and in the third, the Lakers notched two more to bring the
score to 6-3. The second game on Friday proved to be much more of a
tough game. The Lakers scored first within the initial minute of
the game, but the Huskies roared back. The game went into overtime
with a 3-3 tie and was not settled until 1:45 remained in the
overtime period. The Huskies are currently on a six game slide and
are set to face-off against Holy Cross on Jan. 19.
Canisius: Freshman Tommy Flikeid (Lakeville,
Minn.) recorded the first assist of his career in Friday
night’s game. Senior defenseman Brandon Irish-Baker
(Clarence, N.Y.) continued his career offensive season when he
notched his career-best ninth assist of the season. Canisius has
killed the last 30 power plays, which is the most since the Griffs
killed 36 straight last season. The Griffs haven’t allowed a
power play goal during the past six games, which is longest stretch
since a six-game stretch from Dec. 10, 1993 to Jan. 19, 1994. The
Blue and Gold allowed the first goal in both weekend games. The
Griffs have done that in the past five contests, 10 of the past 12,
and 14 of 17. The Griffs matched a school record with their 10th
straight loss, which also happened from Dec. 9, 1988 to Jan. 22,
1989.
Holy Cross: Senior goaltender Tony Quesada made 18
saves and set a school record for career wins with 46 in the 4-3
win over Army on Friday night. The record for career wins was held
by Paul Pijanowski (1984-87). He is now 7-3-1 on the season.
Quesada is currently second all-time at Holy Cross in save
percentage (.911), games played (86) and minutes played (4924:26),
while he is third in goals against average (2.57) and saves (2172).
Senior Tyler McGregor scored two goals in the 4-3 win at Army on
Friday night. He leads the team in scoring with 15 goals and six
assists for 21 points. McGregor’s .83 goals per game average
this season is third in the nation. His 104 career points ranks him
33rd all-time at Holy Cross. Freshman Marty Dams scored his first
collegiate goal at Army on Saturday night.
Mercyhurst: Mercyhurst is now 20-5-1 all time
against UConn. The Mercyhurst/Army and Mercyhurst/UConn series in
successive had similarities. A week ago Friday, Army scored on a
penalty shot in a 5-0 win and then won in OT 3-2 the next night.
Against UConn Friday, the Lakers scored the game-winning goal on a
second period penalty shot (sophomore forward, Ryan Toomey) and
defeated the Huskies in OT the next night. Senior defenseman Conrad
Martin, who has been out of action until the Army series, scored
his first goal of the season Friday. Senior defenseman Preston
brigs also scored his first of the year Friday. Mercyhurst returns
to the Ice Center next Friday and Saturday for games against AIC.
The Lakers lead the all-time series 18-1-1 and won both prior
meetings this season at AIC by scores of 4-1 and 9-3.
Sacred Heart: The Pioneers completed a season sweep of Canisius, winning a pair of games in Buffalo over the weekend. Friday night, senior Peter Giatrelis scored two goals as the Pioneers won 4-1. Saturday, the Pioneers scored one goal in each period to finish the sweep with a 3-1 win. Junior Pierre-Luc O’Brien scored two goals over the weekend and still leads the team in goal scoring with 13 goals to go along with 18 assists for a team high 31 points. Junior Jason Smith has allowed just six goals in his last four games, lowering his goals against average to 2.07 The Pioneers finish out their non-conference season with a visit to Dartmouth Friday night before returning to conference play when they host Bentley Saturday night.
