Freshman, Goaltender, Sarnia, ONT
Stopped 67 of the 70 shots he faced on the weekend for a .957 save percentage. Made 36 saves in a 1-1 tie with Holy Cross Friday night.
Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week
Jason Kearney - Bentley
Freshman, Goaltender, Gibsonia, Penn.
Freshman made a career-high 38 saves Saturday night as Bentley beat Army 4-1. In earning his second career win, Kearney made 14 third period saves to keep Army from getting back into the game.
Weekly Honor Roll
Chase Podsiad, Army (Sr., F, Wyandotte, Mich.)
- Podsiad scored the game-tying goal Friday night to help Army earn
its second point of the season in the league standings. It was the
sophomore’s first goal since moving up to the forward line
from defense four games ago.
Anthony Canzoneri, Bentley (Fr., F, Homer Glenn, Ill.) -
Freshman continues to key the Falcon offense with assists on three
of Bentley’s five goals in the weekend series with Army.
Assisted on the only Bentley goal Friday night and then picked up
helpers on the opening and third goals in Saturday night’s
4-1 win. Canzoneri leads the Falcons with 11 points and nine
assists so far this season.
Jeff Gumaer, Bentley (Fr., F, St. Louis, Mo.) -
Freshman potted a pair of goals Saturday night as Bentley beat Army
4-1. The multi-goal game is the first of the freshman’s
career. He scored Bentley’s third goal in the second period
putting the Falcon’s up 3-0 and finished the game with the
only goal of the third period.
Ray Jean, Bentley (Jr., G, Randolph, Maine) - Junior
goaltender was superb Friday night, making 34 saves, as Bentley
earned a 1-1 tie with Army. Jean was the difference in earning
Bentley a point on the night as he made 14 saves in the third
period and overtime, helping Bentley (which was outshot 10-1 in the
third period) hold on for the tie.
Joey Coccimiglio, Canisius (Jr., F, Sault Ste. Marie, ONT)
- On the weekend, Coccimiglio had four points (two goals, two
assists) in the two games against the Huskies. Coccimiglio extended
his point streak to six games and goal streak to four games, both
the longest on the team this season.
Spencer Churchill, Canisius (Fr., F, Brantford, ONT) - Churchill had three assists in Saturday night’s game, which was a career high. Churchill hadn’t played in the month of November before getting the call this weekend and only had one assist coming into the game.
B.J. Bayers, Connecticut (Fr., F, St. Louis
Park, Minn.) - Bayers earned his first collegiate points this
weekend with two goals in the Huskies’ 9-3 victory over
Canisius on Friday night. He scored the first goal of the game that
set Connecticut off on its seven unanswered goals run. He also
scored the team’s sixth goal. Both goals were scored on even
plays. He has taken a total of seven shots this year, scoring on
two.
Cole Koidahl, Connecticut (Jr., F, Minneapolis, Minn.) -
Koidahl has been a team leader all season. In Friday night’s
victory he assisted on the fifth goal of the game and on Saturday
night, Koidahl scored the team’s first goal at the 1:18 mark
of the game. He also assisted on the team’s game-tying goal
at the end of regulation.
Tyler McGregor, Holy Cross (Sr., F, Ajax, ONT) - McGregor
scored two goals in the 2-1 win over American International on
Saturday night. He now has nine goals on the season and 97 career
points making him three shy of becoming the 36th Crusader to join
the 100 point club.
Ben Conway, Holy Cross (Sr., G, South Hadley, Mass.) -
Conway made 27 saves and allowed one goal in Saturday’s 2-1
win at American International. He improved to 2-1-0 on the
season.
Dewey Thomson, Holy Cross (Fr., F, Northbridge, Mass.) -
In the 1-1 tie with American International on Friday night, Thomson
scored his second goal of the season with three seconds left in the
third period to send the game into overtime.
Mike Ella, Mercyhurst (Jr., G, Schomberg, Ohio) - Ella
rebounded after a poor showing at Holy Cross the prior weekend to
stop 29 of 30 Sacred Heart shots in a 3-1 Mercyhurst win Saturday
night. The only goal he allowed came on a second period penalty
shot. Ella also assisted on the first goal of the game, the first
assist by a Mercyhurst netminder since January of 2003. The
Saturday win moved the Lakers back into possession of first place
in Atlantic Hockey.
Chris Trafford, Mercyhurst (Fr., F, Kinburn, ONT)
- Trafford snapped a six-game scoring drought with a goal and an
assist in Saturday’s 3-1 win over the Pioneers. He scored the
first goal of the game (his first collegiate power play goal) and
assisted on the Lakers’ third goal midway in the third
period. The two-point effort was his second of the season.
Alexandre Parent, Sacred Heart (So., F, Boisbriand, QUE) - Parent was key to the Pioneers gaining a split in their road trip to Mercyhurst this weekend. In Friday night’s win he had a goal and two assists in SHU’s 4-2 win. Parent assisted on the Pioneer’s second goal less then one minute into the second period, then scored the eventual game winner three minutes later. Parent would assist on a Pioneer insurance goal late in the second period as well. He now has a team high 10 assists, two go along with two goals for 12 points, second on the team.
Team Notes
American International: AIC killed all 15 Holy Cross power play opportunities in the two-game weekend series, with the Crusaders 0-8 Friday and 0-7 Saturday with the man advantage. HC was No. 2 nationally on the power play entering the weekend. The Yellow Jackets have killed off opponents’ last 18 power play chances.
Army: Army ran its unbeaten streak to four games with a 1-1 overtime tie Friday night at Bentley. However, the run came to an end the following evening at John A. Ryan Arena with a 4-1 setback to the Falcons ... Army has earned two points in the Atlantic Hockey standings during its current stretch that sees the Black Knights open with their first eight league tilts on the road ... Chase Podsiad tied Friday night’s game, scoring his first goal of the season ... Podsiad was playing his fourth game on the forward line with classmates Bryce Hollweg and Luke Flicek, since making the move from defense to wing ... Flicek continues to lead the Black Knights in scoring ... he picked up an assist on Podsiad’s goal ... freshman defenseman Tim Manthey also continues to impress ... he assisted on Army’s only goal Saturday night ... he has six points from the blue line this season (1G, 5A).
Bentley: The 3-1-2 start to conference play for Bentley is the best for the Falcon’s at the Division I level and the best overall since 1997-98 when Bentley was 5-1-0 in the first six games in the ECAC Central Division ... for the third consecutive weekend, Bentley faced the reigning Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Week, this past weekend it was Army’s Brad Roberts. Bentley has been very good in cooling off these hot goaltenders, posting a 3-0-2 mark in the five games (the one conference loss was not against a GoW as Canisius’ Ryan Hatch played instead of Bryan Worosz) ... Freshman Anthony Canzoneri has seven assists in the last five games and is tied for sixth in assists in AHA play and is tied for second in points amongst freshman , while fellow classmates Jeff Gumaer (3-1-4, t-6th) and Dain Prewitt (1-2-3, t-8th) are also in the top ten among freshman in AHA scoring ... The Falcon’s are one of just five D-I teams to have three goaltenders with wins this season, surprisingly two of the other four teams (Canisius and Mercyhurst) are in the AHA, while a third is a former AHA squad (Quinnipiac), the final team is Nebraska-Omaha.
Canisius: Junior forward Joey Coccimiglio
continues to play well as he has 11 points in six games since
returning to the Griffs lineup. Coccimiglio has scored a point in
all six games and has scored goals in five of those six games,
including the past four. His point streak and goal streak are the
longest on the team this season. On the weekend, Coccimiglio had
four points in the two games against the Huskies. Freshman
defenseman Kevin Kozlowski scored his first collegiate goal in
Friday night’s loss to Connecticut. The nine goals allowed by
Canisius were the most since Oct. 23, 1998 when the Griffs allowed
11 while the nine were the most Canisius had given up in its
history in Atlantic Hockey. The Griffs improved to 3-1-1 on
Saturdays and picked up their first win of the season after being
tied at the end of the first period. The Griffs won their second
overtime game of the season and improved their overtime record to
2-0-1.
Connecticut: Nine goals has been the most the team has
scored since March 6, 2004.
Holy Cross: Senior co-captain Tyler McGregor scored both
Holy Cross goals in the 2-1 win at American International on
Saturday night. He now has nine goals and five assists for a team
best 14 points, giving him 97 career points. McGregor is three
points shy of becoming the 36th Crusader to reach 100 career
points. Freshman Dewey Thomson scored the game tying goal with just
three seconds left in the third period in the 1-1 tie with AIC. He
now has two goals on the season. The Crusaders’ 6-2-1 record
through the first nine games of the season is their best since
going 7-2-0 to start the 1993-94 season, while it marks their best
start as a Division I program.
Mercyhurst: With the weekend split, Mercyhurst is 10-8-2
lifetime against the Pioneers. Mercyhurst remained perfect on
Saturday nights (5-0) and perfect when leading after the second
period (6-0). Junior forward Scott Champagne had an assist in each
game to keep his consecutive-game scoring streak alive at 29.
Sophomore forward Matt Warren played his first games of the season
against SHU and picked up his first career game-winner with a late
second period marker Saturday. That was his only shot of the game.
Junior goaltender Mike Ella assisted on Saturday’s first
goal, marking the first helper by a Mercyhurst goaltender since
January of 2003. Mercyhurst will test two new, non-conference
opponents in the coming week. The Lakers will play at Yale Tuesday
before hosting Ferris State Friday and Saturday.
Sacred Heart: The Pioneers split a pair of road games this weekend, going 1-1 at Mercyhurst. Friday night, the Pioneers won 4-2, powered by a three goal third period. Sophomore Alexandre Parent had a goal and two assists and junior Pierre-Luc O’Brien added two assists. Saturday the Pioneers offense was stymied by Mercyhurst defense, as they managed just one goal. The score came on a penalty shot by senior Rocco Molinaro. It was the first time a Pioneer scored on a penalty shot since Garrett Larson convereted an attempt on February 15, 2002 against Iona. O’Brien still leads the Pioneers in points with 13, including five goals and eight assists. Parent is second on the team with 12 points, two goals and a team high 10 assists. Junior Jason Smith has a goals against average of 2.27. The Pioneers (5-3-1, 5-2-1 AH) will finish the Thanksgiving holiday weekend with a Sunday matinee against visisting RIT at Milford Ice Pavilion.
