HAVERHILL, Mass. -- A new standard has been set in
the classroom for the student-athletes of Atlantic Hockey as 124
have earned a spot on the All-Academic Team. The 124
student-athletes eclipses the mark of 105 that were honored after
the 2004-05 season. In the fourth year of existence, 10 players
earned their fourth appearance on the All-Academic squad, with
Sacred Heart placing the most on the list with four. In addition,
17 student-athletes have been named three times, while 23 players
earned their second trip on the squad.
This season a trio of student-athletes achieved perfection in the
classroom. Junior Nick Kary (Sacred Heart) became the first
two-time Scholar Athlete of the Year, while junior Bryce Hollweg
(Army) and freshman Matt Fennell (Mercyhurst) garnered the award
for the first time. Kary took home the Scholar Athlete of the Year
back in 2004-05. All three were also named to the Academic All-Star
Team by posting the highest GPA at their respective positions.
Joining Kary and Hollweg on the frontline is sophomore Mike
Phillipich (Air Force). Fellow freshman David Cianfrini (Canisius)
joins Fennell on the blueline, while senior Jason Smith (Sacred
Heart) and freshman Andrew Loewen (Canisius) are the netminders.
For Kary, this is his third time posting one of the three top GPA's
at the forward position, while Hollweg was also a member of last
year's Academic All-Star Team.
Of the 124 student-athletes that were recognized as member of the
All-Academic Team this season, 49 were members of the 2005-06
squad, and 36 were freshman. Bentley leads the list with 17 players
honored, while Sacred Heart and Army had the highest number of
returning student-athletes this season on the All-Academic Team
with nine apiece. First year members Air Force and RIT had nine and
16 student-athletes, respectively named to the All-Academic
Team.
Of the 18 players that earned All-Conference honors this past
season, half of them (9) were also named to the All-Academic Team.
Leading the way is senior Pierre-Luc O'Brien (Sacred Heart).
O'Brien, a three-time All-Conference nominee, is a four-time
All-Academic performer. Senior Jason Smith (Sacred Heart), and
juniors Luke Flicek (Army) and Scott Marchesi (Sacred Heart) have
been honored three times for their academic prowess. Senior Matt
Scherer (Connecticut) and sophomore Josh Kassel (Army) have been
named twice to the All-Academic Team, while juniors Jereme Tendler
(AIC) and Simon Lambert (RIT), and freshman Al Mazur (RIT) earned
their first appearance on the All-Academic squad.
To qualify for the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team an individual
must post a 3.0 grade point average or higher in all of the
academic periods during which his team was actively competing.
Atlantic Hockey's Top Scholar Athlete is an award given annually to
the player or players who achieves the highest grade point average
over the course of the academic semesters of competition.
The Atlantic Hockey Association was formed when nine institutions
joined together in 2003, to found a new Division-I men's ice hockey
conference. The league currently consists of ten members: Air Force
Academy, American International College, Army, Bentley College,
Canisius College, the University of Connecticut, the College of the
Holy Cross, Mercyhurst College, Rochester Institute of Technology,
and Sacred Heart University.
