Griff's Fall To Waterloo in Season Opening Exhibition Contest
Griff's Fall To Waterloo in Season Opening Exhibition
Waterloo built a three-goal lead through two periods and held
off the Canisius
College hockey team Wednesday night to defeat the Golden Griffins
4-2 in an
exhibition contest at the Buffalo State Sports Arena.
The Warriors opened the scoring 4:29 into the contest when Joel
Olszowka corralled
the loose puck, skated toward the net and beat Canisius starting
goaltender Bryce
Luker (Rigaud, Quebec) underneath his glove for the 1-0 lead.
Waterloo added another
power-play goal at 10:19 of the second period when Shane Hart sent
a touch pass
through the crease to David Edgeworth who scored in the bottom
right corner to put
the Warriors up two.
Down 3-0 going into the third period, the Griffs could never get
closer than two
goals. Freshman Carl Hudson (Smooth Rock Falls, Ont.) made the
score 3-1 as he slid
into the slot and beat Waterloo goaltender Jimmy Bernier on the
high glove side. The
Warriors added another goal to make it 4-1 before freshman Josh
Heidinger (Buffalo,
N.Y) picked up a rebound off a shot by Michael Cohen
(Williamsville, N.Y.) and
scored with 7:19 remaining.
Cohen and junior defenseman Kyle Bushee (Otsego, Mich.) led all
players with two
assists apiece.
"We had some good individuals do some good things. As five-man
units and in the
team game, we're not as good as we will be," Canisius coach Dave
Smith said.
"Our freshmen who played in their first collegiate hockey game
played well, and
our goaltenders also played well.
"We need more desperation in all three zones to find the success
we're looking
for."
Canisius opens its regular-season schedule Saturday afternoon
against Robert Morris.
Game time between the Griffs and Colonials at the Buffalo State
Sports Arena is set
for 4 p.m.
