Week
Louis Menard - R.I.T. Sophomore, Goaltender, Chicoutimi, QUE
Menard turned in a solid performance on Saturday in only his second start as a collegian. Menard made 36 saves and allowed three goals in a 4-2 loss at Clarkson. He made 15 saves in the first, 11 in the second and 10 in the third.
Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week
Carl Hudson - Canisius
Freshman, Defense, Smooth Rock Falls, ONT
Hudson scored twice in his collegiate debut, with both goals coming on the power play. Hudson was the first Griff to score two goals in his initial game in the past seven seasons and tied the team record for goals by a defenseman since the team went to the Division I level.
Weekly Honor Roll
Peter Foster, Air Force (Sr., G, Canton, Mich.) - Foster posted a 1-1 record over the weekend for the Falcons. Peter played 118 minutes, gave up 5 goals and made 32 saves. Foster gave up 2 goals versus 13th-ranked Colorado College and 3 goals against Alabama-Huntsville. Two of the five goals he allowed came on the power play.
Bryce Luker, Canisius (Jr., G, Rigaud, QUE) - Luker stopped 38 of 42 shots in the loss to the Colonials, including the first 22 in the game.
Simon Lambert - R.I.T. (Jr., F, Ste.-Therese, QUE) - Lambert got the 2006-07 season off to a nice start over the weekend. The junior forward had three assists in a 4-3 loss at St. Lawrence. He was held scoreless on Saturday versus Clarkson, firing two shots.
Jocelyn Guimond - R.I.T. (Jr., G, Quebec City, QUE) - Guimond started the Tigers first game at St. Lawrence. The junior did not disappoint, making 41 saves, allowing four goals. He had 10 saves in the first, 14 in the second and 17 in the third.
Team Notes
Atlantic Hockey: In competition for the Third Annual Commissioners' Cup, Air Force garnered the first victory for Atlantic Hockey with a 4-3 win over Alabama-Huntsville. Canisius had a chance to give AHA a four-point weekend for the chase for the cup, but Robert Morris got revenege on the Griffs' with a 4-2 victory. Canisus defeated the Colonials last season in Pittsburgh, 6-4. AHA was 2-0 after the first weekend of last year's Commisioners' Cup battle, as along with the Griffs' victory over Robert Morris, Mercyhurst defeated Michigan Tech.
Air Force: Andrew Ramsey had a four-point weekend with an assist vs. CC and 1-2-3 vs. UAH...Senior Ramsey's game-winner on Sunday was the second of his career and the first since his freshman year...AFA beat UAH for third consecutive time dating back to last season, the longest streak since 1990 when UAH was Division II...Falcons held both opponents under 20 shots and are allowing 18.5 shots per game this season...Four Falcon freshmen saw their first collegiate action last weekend. Jeff Hajner, Matt Fairchild and Chris Hepp played in both games. Brett Nylander and David Martinson each played one game...Head coach Frank Serratore earned his 100th Division I victory at Air Force with Sunday's win. His AFA record improved to 131-174-19 and his overall record is now 180-266-28...AFA plays at Alaska-Fairbanks Oct. 13-14. The Falcons have never won in Fairbanks (0-6). The teams have not played since 1997 when UAF swept the series in Fairbanks.
Canisius: Canisius opened its season with a 4-2 loss to Robert Morris as the teams opened the season against each other for the second-straight year. The Blue and Gold are now winless in their last eight home openers. Defenseman Carl Hudson (Smooth Rock Falls, Ont.) led the team with two goals in his first collegiate contest. Hudson tied the team record for goals by a defenseman since the Griffs went to the Division I level for the 1998-99 season. Current Griff Joel Kitchen (Orilla, Ont.) was the last freshman to score two goals in a game. Bryce Luker (Rigaud, Quebec) started for the Griffs in net and stopped 38 of 42 shots, including the first 22 in the contest. The 38 saves were the most by a Canisius netminder in his first game with the Griffs in the last seven seasons. Canisius travels to No. 8 Miami this weekend for two games against the Redhawks. The games are the first for the Griffs at a top-10 opponent since Dec. 17-18, 2004, when the Griffs played at No. 8 North Dakota.
Mercyhurst: The meeting with St. Clair was the first-ever between the schools. The Lakers finished 3 of 7 on the power play, scored a shorthanded and a 4 on 4 lamplighter, and got at least one point from 11 different players. Junior forward Ben Cottreau led the point parade with four, senior captain Kyle Gourgon had three and six other players had two points each. Mercyhurst opens regular season play next weekend at Ferris State (CCHA). The teams played for the first time in Erie last season with the Bulldogs winning both times, 6-3 and 5-4.
Rochester Instit. of Tech.:
Coach Wilson was impressed with how all of the rookies have
progressed so far this season. Al Mazur and Matt Crowell each had
assist for the Tigers this weekend. RIT began the season with two
losses despite being in both games. On Friday the fell behind early
on to St. Lawrence but kept it close cutting the lead
to a goal in the third period on a goal from Steve Pinizotto
(Mississauga, ON). He also added an assist. Simon Lambert also had
three assists. On Saturday the Tigers fell behind 2-0 but clawed
their way back, tying the game at 2-2 on goals from Brennan Sarazin
(Nepean, ON) and Ricky Walton (Hamilton, ON). The Golden Knights
went ahead in the third and added an empty-netter in third to win
4-3. Jocleyn Guimnd made 41 saves in game #1 and Louis Menard made
36 saves in game #2.
