Canisius: Canisius split its weekend series at
Connecticut in the only regular-season matchups between the teams.
The Griffs picked up their first road win of the season in the 4-3
overtime win on Jan. 12. The split was the third straight of a
weekend conference series for the Griffs. Canisius has won seven of
the last nine games over the Huskies. Chris Forsman (Powell River,
B.C.) led the team with five points on the weekend. He had a
career-high four points in the 4-3 overtime victory. The freshman
tied a school record since the program went to Division I for
points by a defenseman, which was held by Joel Tarvudd on Jan. 8,
2000. Josh Heidinger (Buffalo, N.Y.) extended his point streak to
four games with three assists on the weekend. Heidinger is tied for
11th on the single-season points list and fourth on the
single-season assists list at the Division I level. Carl Hudson
(Smooth Rock Falls, Ont.) scored the game-winner for the Griffs on
a 4-on-3 power play. Hudson's power-play goal was his eighth of the

Joel Kitchen (Orilla, Ont.) had three during the 2004-05 season.
The road win for Canisius ended a stretch of 12 straight
regular-season losses away from home for the Blue and Gold.
Canisius won in overtime on the road for the first time since Jan.
17, 2004, at Sacred Heart. This season, Canisius has outshot its
two opponents 6-0 in overtime. Under coach Dave Smith, the Griffs
are 3-1-3 in overtime games. Canisius recorded power-play goals in
each game and extended its stretch of games with a power-play goal
to 10, which is the longest in the last eight seasons. In the 4-3
loss to Connecticut, Canisius had a season-low eight penalty
minutes. Canisius returns home for its second straight Tuesday game
when the Griffs host rival Mercyhurst in the 47th all-time meeting
between the schools. Canisius took three of four points earlier
this season. The Griffs close out their non-conference schedule
Jan. 19, at Dartmouth in the first-ever meeting between the
schools.
Connecticut: The University of Connecticut
men's hockey team suffered its first lost of 2007 as the Huskies
were beaten by Canisius in overtime, 4-3, Friday evening in Storrs.
The Huskies rallied by three goals in the third period to even the
score at three goals apiece, before the Golden Griffins netted the
game-winning goal 1:12 into overtime. For the Huskies, sophomore
Ryan Hawkins and senior B.J. Crum each netted their first goals of
the season. The following night, UConn snapped a four-game losing
streak to Canisius with a 4-3 win of their own Saturday evening.
Senior Cole Koidahl scored a pair of power-play goals to give the
Huskies the lead before Canisius would eventually snag the lead
early in the second period. Sophomore Chris Myhro tied the game in
the third period with his team-leading 13th goal of the season
before Hawkins scored the game-winning goal with under four minutes
remaining in play. Koidahl now owns the team lead with 21 points
and now has 94 points in his career, leaving him just six points
shy of the century mark. UConn returns to the ice this weekend with
a pair of games at RIT.
Holy Cross: The Crusaders will face Dartmouth
on the road on Tuesday, January 16. Holy Cross defeated the Big
Green last year in Hanover, N.H. by score of 3-2 on January 21,
2006. James Sixsmith scored a shorthanded game-winning goal with 28
seconds left in the third period...Holy Cross is 3-1 in the last
four games against ECACHL opponents...Senior captain James Sixsmith
now has 141 career points with 43 goals and 98 assists as he is
second on the Holy Cross all-time Division I points list. The
record is 143 set by current San Jose Shark Patrick Rissmiller
(1998-2002). Sixsmith leads the team in assists (24) and points
(36), while he is tied for first in goals (12). His 1.57 points per
game are third in the nation and his 1.04 assists per game are
second nationally...Senior Jon Landry's 1.13 points per game by a
defenseman lead the nation. For the season he has nine goals and 17
assists for 26 points...Sophomore goaltender Charlie Lockwood had a
career high 33 saves in the 2-2 tie with Air Force on Friday
night...Holy Cross' 22.4 power play percentage is fourth in the
nation. Mercyhurst: Mercyhurst is now winless in its last nine
games (0-8-1). Brett Robinson and Kerry Bowman snapped ten-game
goal-scoring droughts in the weekend series at Army while Matt
Pierce snapped an 8-game dry spell and Ryan Toomey a six-game. The
Lakers have gone seven games without a power play goal and are 0
for their last 28. Junior Ben Cottreau and senior Scott Champagne,
the team's leading and third-leading scorers respectively, have
missed the last 6 and 4 games. The Lakers are 1-5 in one-goal
games, including three overtime losses and 1-5 in two-goal
contests. Army has won five of the last six against Mercyhurst but
still trails the all-time series 14-7. Mercyhurst plays three games
this week; at Canisius Tuesday and home to Bentley Friday and
Saturday. Canisius is 1-0-1 against Mercyhurst this season. The
Griffs won 3-1 at home on November 17 and tied 3-3 in Erie the next
night. Mercyhurst leads the all-time series 28-13-5. The Lakers
lead the all-time series against Bentley 20-5 and, although they
won four of five meetings last season, the Falcons nipped the
Lakers 3-2 in double overtime in the conference semifinals.
Rochester Institute of Technology: RIT vaulted
their way into first place with three wins last week. The Tigers
outscored Canisius and Sacred Heart 16-6. RIT held Sacred Heart's
power play to two goals in 19 chances this past weekend. RIT
goaltender Jocelyn Guimond posted a 3-0-0 last weekend including a
shut out of Sacred Heart on Friday night. The shut out was the
first of his career at RIT. He is ninth in Division I with a .929
save percentage. Ten players have at least 10 points for RIT this
season and four players have 20+ points on the season. Eighteen
players have scored at least one goal for the Tigers this season.
RIT is sixth in scoring offense, averaging 3.95 goals per game. The
Tigers are 16th in scoring defense (2.59 goals per game), third in
power play (23.2%) and 12th in penalty killing (87.6%). Since an
overtime loss to Bentley in November RIT is 10-2-0 and 9-1-0 versus
Atlantic Hockey Association foes. The Tigers have had winning
streaks of five, two and three in that stretch.
Sacred Heart: The Pioneers went 1-2 on the week, beating AIC before being swept at home by RIT. Friday night's 4-0 loss was the first time the Pioneers had been shutout this season. It was the first time SHU had been held scoreless on home ice since March 15, 2003 when they were blanked 2-0 by Bentley in the first round of the MAAC playoffs. The weekend sweep was the first time the Pioneers were swept at home since Canisius beat them twice on December 4th and 5th, 1998. The two defeats were the first two on home ice for the Pioneers this year, equaling their total number of home-ice losses in each of the last two seasons. The losses snapped a four game winning streak and a seven game unbeaten streak for SHU. Senior Pierre-Luc O'Brien had three assists on the week, giving him 145 career points, and 82 career assists, both of which are new school records. He needs three more goals to break Martin Paquet's school record for goals scored in a career (65). The Pioneers close out the non-conference portion of their schedule Saturday when they travel to Dartmouth and coverage can be heard on WICC 600 AM.
