Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week


Mike Phillipich - Air Force
Sophomore, Forward, Lansing, Mich. 


Phillipich was named to the 2007 Atlantic Hockey All-Tournament Team and was named the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player. He totaled 2 goals, three assists for five points in leading the Falcons to their first ever Atlantic Hockey Tournament Crown, as well as the academy's first ever berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Dave Jarman - Sacred Heart
 
Freshman, Forward, Toronto, ONT 


Jarman had a goal and an assist in the AHA semifinal game. He scored the goal that tied the game for SHU and then assisted on the Pioneers go ahead goal in the third period. Jarman finished the season as the leading scorerer among rookies with 11 goals 11 assists and 22 points.


Weekly Honor Roll


Brett Nylander, Air Force (Freshman, Forward, Baudette, Minn.) - 1-1-2 in the tournament ... Tied his career high with two points in Friday's win over Sacred Heart ... Centered a fourth line that scored two of the team's five goals ... Five shots and a +2.


Tim Manthey, Army (Sophomore, Defensemen, Anoka, Minn.) - Manthey scored two goals and an asssist this past weekend as Army advanced to the championship game of the AHA Tournament. He notched a goal and an assist in Friday's 3-1 seminfal win over Connecticut and followed with his fourth goal of the tournament against Air Force in the championship game. The sophomore was named to the All-Tournament team for his efforts.


Eric Giosa, Sacred Heart
(Sophomore, Forward, Northville, Mich.) - Giosa tallied a goal and assist in the semifinals against Air Force. He assisted on the game tying goal and then scored the go ahead goal for the Pioneers. Giosa finished the season fourth on the team wil 27 points, 15 goals and 27 assists.

Atlantic Hockey: The members of the 2007 Atlantic Hockey All-Tournament are: Forward - Mike Phillipich, Air Force; Bryce Hollweg, Army and Bear Trapp, Sacred Heart. Defense - Billy Devoney, Air Force and Tim Manthey, Army. Goalie - Andrew Volkening, Air Force. This is the second staight year the an Atlantic Hockey team will face Minnesota in the West Regional Semifinals. Last season, Holy Cross upset the Gophers before falling to North Dakota in the Regional Finals.


Air Force: Air Force earned its first ever conference tournament championship game ... AFA is making its first trip to the NCAA Tournament ... It also marks the first time a service academy team has ever been to the NCAA Tournament ... Falcons are seeded fourth in the West Regional and face top-seeded Minnesota ... AFA and Minnesota have never played ... AFA has won six straight games, the longest winning streak against Division I teams in school history ... AFA's six-game streak is the second longest winning streak in the nation behind Boston College (10 games) ... AFA's fourth line scored two goals on Friday ... Freshmen Brett Nylander and Matt Fairchild each scored goals while Jay Medenwaldt had two assists ... Junior Josh Print's game-winner was the first of his career in overtime . It was his first game-winner of the season and his first since his freshman year ... Senior Billy Devoney has scored two goals in his last three games. He had the game-tying goal with 54 seconds left in the third ... Mike Phillipich extended his scoring streak to six straight games ... Eric Ehn extended his scoring streak to seven straight games. He has also had streaks of eight and seven this season ... Ehn had one assist on Friday (on Phillipich's goal) and is now two points behind Michigan's T.J. Hensick for the national scoring lead. Hensick had four points on the weekend. Hensick has played one more game than Ehn. Hensick's points per game average is 1.65 while Ehn is at 1.64 ... Ehn leads the fan voting for the Hobey Baker award. In the first two days of the fan voting, Ehn has 34 percent of the vote, more than twice any other player at www.HobeyBaker.com ... Ben Worker earned his seventh win of the season and his fourth consecutive win ... Michael Mayra returned to the lineup on Friday after missing 10 games with an injury ... AFA is now 7-9 in conference tournament. AFA was 4-9 in the College Hockey America Tournament and is now 3-0 in the AHA Playoffs with wins over Holy Cross, Sacred Heart and Army this season ... Of AFA's 39 games this season, 26 have been decided by two goals or less. Five of those games have ended in a tie. Of the other 21, AFA is 9-12-0. The Falcons are 3-6 in games decided by one goal and 6-6 in games decided by two goals. Friday's win was AFA's first overtime victory this season. The Falcons have gone into overtime seven times this season and AFA is 1-1-5 in the extra period ... AFA's 19 Division I victories this season are already a school record. The Falcons have clinched their first winning season since 1999-2000 team was 19-18-2, posting the most wins in the Frank Serratore era ... Josh Frider tied his career best with two goals on Saturday ... Freshman Andrew Volkening made just his second start since Thanksgiving on Saturday. He was named to the all-tournament team as he stopped 23 of the 24 shots he faced.
 

Army: The Black Knights advanced to the championship game of a conference tournament for the first time in program history this past weekend ... their 3-1 win over Connecticut was the Academy's first ever seminfal victory in a league tournament ... Army scored two power play goals in that game and one in the finals to finish the season with an extra man goal in its last seven games ... the six goals allowed were the most by the Army defense all season ... despite that stat the team defense still finished 19th in the nation with a 2.52 GAA ... Army's offense posted its highest finish in NCAA ranks (35th) since the 2001-02 season scoring 2.76 goals a game ... the Black Knights penalty kill unit finished the season ranked 23rd in the country at 83.7 percent ... Tim Manthey scored four goals in the AHA Tournament, the most in one playoffs in school history ... he finished the season ranked 6th among defensman in points per game average (0.85) ... Luke Flicek led Army in scoring for the second straight season and ranked 40th in the nation averaging 1.09 points per game ... goalie Josh Kassel finished 24th and 31st, respectfully in goals against average (2.38) and save percentage (.912) ... freshman Owen Meyer finished 19th in the country among rookie point scorers ... Army's 15 conference wins during the regular season are the most ever conference wins in school history.


Connecticut: The University of Connecticut men's hockey team suffered a 3-1 loss to Army in the Atlantic Hockey Tournament finals. The Huskies were bidding for their first appearance in the championship game. Sophomore Chris Myhro scored UConn's lone goal of the game for his 20th of the season.


Sacred Heart: The Pioneers fell to Air Force in the Atlantic Hockey semifinals, 5-4 in overtime. It was the first time the Pioneers lost an overtime game. Senior Pierre-Luc O'Brien finished the season as SHU's leading scorer with 16 goals and 29 assists for 45 points. Sophomore Bear Trapp scored a team leading 17 goals. Freshman Dave Jarman was the leading scorer amongst Pioneer rookies with 22 points, 11 goals and 11 assists. The Pioneers finished the season with 21 wins, tying the school record set last season.
