BRODIE SHEAHAN - HOLY CROSS
Sophomore, Forward, Lethbridge, ALB
Sheahan had one goal and four assists for five points on the
week. He recorded three assists against Bentley on Friday night,
while he had a power play goal and one assist in the 4-2 win over
the Falcons on Saturday. Sheahan leads the team in assists with 14
and in points with 21.

MATT LUNDIN - MERCYHURST
Junior, Goaltender, Apple Valley, Minn.
Lundin recorded the fourth shutout of his career and the first
in a Mercyhurst uniform in Friday's 3-0 win. He stopped all 29 Army
shots and played the last few minutes of the game in obvious
discomfort after a goal-mouth collision. He was also spectacular
late in the third when Army, trailing 2-0, had a 5-on-3 power play
for a full two minutes and couldn't score.

Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week

ERIK PETERSON - BENTLEY
Freshman, Forward, Shorewood,
Minn.
Peterson scored a hat trick, netting Bentley's
final three goals to lead the Falcons to a 6-4 win over Holy Cross
on Friday. It was the first hat trick of Peterson's career and the
first by a Bentley rookie since 2005. Among Peterson's goals were
the first game-winning goal and first short-handed goal of his
career.

Derrick Burnett, Air Force (Fr, F, Corona, Calif.) - Had nine
assists, but no goals, in his first 19 games as a
collegian...Scored two goals vs. RIT on Saturday to bring the
Falcons back from a 2-0 deficit...His first goal came midway
through the first period and made the score 2-1 RIT...His second
goal came midway through the second period and tied the game at 2-2
on the power play...Now has 11 points on the season to rank 10th in
the league in points by a rookie.
Greg Flynn, Air Force (Jr, D, Lino Lakes, Minn.) - Career-best
three assists in Friday's win over RIT...Assisted on Matt
Charbonneau's game winner...Career-best five assists in the
series...Extended his point-streak to five games, a
career-best...The top scoring defenseman in the AHA with 18 points
in 22 games...Ranks seventh in the nation in scoring by a
defenseman.
Andrew Volkening, Air Force (So, G, Genoa, Ill.) - Led Air Force to
a 5-2 win over second-place RIT by stopping 21 of 23 shots on
Friday...On Saturday, gave up two quick goals in the first period
and then stopped 11 of then next 12 shots through the next 54
minutes before allowing the game-winner in overtime.
Tom Mele, American International (Fr, F, Bronx, N.Y.) - Mele has
had a coming out party over the last two weeks. He scored his first
collegiate goal last weekend against Robert Morris. This week, he
posted two goals and an assist in the Jackets three contests. Mele
scored the first goal of the game for AIC against Holy Cross, while
also adding the game tying score with under 10 minutes to play
against Sacred Heart Friday. His assist Saturday evening was a
textbook centering pass that enabled sophomore Josh Froese to score
his first goal of the season.
Dan Ramirez, American International (Fr, G, Rochester, N.Y.) -
Ramirez earned his fifth victory of the year Tuesday stopping 19
shots in AIC's win over Holy Cross. Friday, he turned away a
career-high 39 shot attempts despite the teams 5-4 overtime
setback. Saturday he posted 24 saves, again in an extra period of
action, which ended in a 2-2 tie.
Jereme Tendler, American International (Sr, F, Viceroy, SASK) -
Tendler scored two goals and added an assist in three games this
week for AIC. He scored the first goal of the evening Saturday
night against Scared Heart and added a power-play goal, the third
of the game for AIC, Friday.
Tom Dickhudt, Bentley (Jr, F, Woodbury, Minn.) - Dickhudt notched
four assists this weekend, matching a career high with three
assists on Friday and adding another on Saturday. He is now tied
for the team lead with 10 assists this season.
Jason Kearney, Bentley (Jr, G, Gibsonia, Pa.) - Kearney played the
final period of Saturday's game at Holy Cross and stopped all 15
shots he faced, the most saves in a single period by a Bentley
goalie in over a month.
Andrew Loewen, Canisius (So, G, Winnipieg, MAN) - Loewen continued
his impressive run, allowing only two goals during a two-game
series against Connecticut. In the finale, Loewen stopped all 26
shots he faced to record his second shutout of the season. The
sophomore also stopped 23 shots in the opener and helped kill all
11 power plays the Griffs faced. Loewen has allowed only four goals
in four games during January and in his last nine games, he has
recorded a goals against average of 1.85 and a save percentage of
.945. Loewen has jumped up the Atlantic Hockey leaderboard and now
ranks fourth in goals against average (2.72) and third in save
percentage (.916). In league play, Loewen leads all goalies with a
goals against average of 2.03 and a save percentage of .934.
Vincent Scarsella, Canisius (Fr, F, Lackawanna, N.Y.) - Scarsella
tallied three points in two games against Connecticut over the
weekend. The rookie tallied an assist on the Griffs' lone score on
Friday and then posted two helpers in the 4-0 victory on Saturday.
He posted an assist on the Griffs' game-winning goal in the first
period and then helped seal the victory by setting up teammate
Jason Weeks for a goal. Scarsella leads Atlantic Hockey freshman in
scoring with 17 points. He also ranks 10th among all players with
12 assists.
Jason Weeks, Canisius (So, F, Seattle, Wash.) - Weeks helped lead
the Griffs to a 4-0 victory over Connecticut on Saturday. The
sophomore posted two goals to anchor the Canisius offense. He
scored a short-handed goal, the fourth of his career, with 5:03
left in the second period to give the Griffs a two-goal advantage.
He then sealed the victory with his second goal of the night with
just 3:32 left, scoring on a breakaway to give Canisius a 3-0
advantage. After a slow start to the season (three points in his
first 13 games), Weeks has posted eight points and six goals during
the Griffs' last nine games.
Beau Erickson, Connecticut (So, G, Hinton, Iowa) - Erickson made 35
saves in leading UConn to 3-1 victory on Friday. Followed it up
with 22 more saves on Saturday.
Adam Roy, Holy Cross (Fr, G, Feeding Hills, Mass.) - Roy stopped 73
of 78 shots in two games on the week. On Tuesday he made 37 saves
in the 3-2 loss at AIC, while on Saturday he stopped 36 shots in
the 4-2 win over Bentley.
Everett Sheen, Holy Cross (Fr, F, Lethbridge, ALB) - Sheen had one
goal and two assist for three points on the week. He recorded one
assist against AIC on Tuesday, while he scored the game-winner and
had an assist in the 4-2 win over Bentley on Saturday. Sheen has
scored 10 goals in the last 11 games as his 11 goals lead the team
and are third in the nation by rookies.
Steve Cameron, Mercyhurst (Fr, F, Mission, BC) - Cameron scored
goals in back-to-back games for the first time in his collegiate
career over the weekend. He scored the first power play goal of his
career late in the third period Friday against Army and scored
Mercyhurst's second goal Saturday to snap a 1-1 second period tie
and put the Lakers ahead to stay. That goal came just :32 seconds
after Army had tied the game on a power play. Cameron had 8 shots
in the 2 games and finished +1.
Matt Fennell, Mercyhurst (So, D, Melfort, SASK) - Fennell recorded
the first multiple goal game of his career Saturday in a 4-2 win
over Army. He scored the game's first and last goals (EV, PP). He
was also instrumental in killing 17 of 19 Army power plays in the
two games, all seven in a 3-0 win Friday and 10 of 12 Saturday.
Army had four 5-on-3 advantages in the two games (full two minutes,
1:18, full two minutes, and 1:43) and scored only one goal. The
Black Knights had nine straight power play chances in Saturday's
game. Fennell's first goal Saturday was his first since a 6-2 loss
at Air Force November 3. Fennell finished the two games with a +2
rating and six shots. He also received Atlantic Hockey's Scholar
Athlete of the Year Award before Friday's contest.
Al Mazur, RIT (So, D, Burnaby, BC) - Mazur had two goals and an
assist from the blue-line, as the Tigers earned a big split with
conference leader Air Force. On Friday, Mazur scored a power-play
goal in a 5-2 loss. On Saturday, Mazur scored a power-play goal and
added an assist, as the Tigers pulled out a dramatic, 4-3 overtime
win over Air Force.
Sean Murphy, RIT (Fr, F, Owatonna, Minn.) - Murphy recorded a goal
and two assists on the weekend, as the Tigers earned a big split
with conference leader Air Force. On Friday, Murphy had a hand on
both RIT goals, with a goal and an assist in a 5-2 loss. On
Saturday, Murphy set up Matt Smith for the overtime game-winner in
the Tigers dramatic, 4-3 win over the Falcons.
Nick Johnson, Sacred Heart (So, F, Windsor, Conn.) - Johnson
registered three points in the weekend series with AIC. The
sophomore scored SHU's second goal Friday night and then got the
primary assist on the overtime game-winner. Saturday night he
scored the game-tying goal to help SHU get a point in the game.
Johnson is now second on the team with seven goals and 11 assists
for 18 points.
Olivier St. Onge, Sacred Heart (Fr, G, Wickham, QUE) - The rookie
made 28 saves Saturday night to help the Pioneers earn a tie
against AIC. The performance included 15 saves in the first
period.
Bear Trapp, Sacred Heart (Jr, F, Balcarres, SASK) - Trapp had four
points (two goals and two assists) in SHU's weekend series with
AIC. He scored the game winning goal in Friday's overtime victory
and also tallied an assist in the win. The helper was Trapp's one
hundreth point of his career. Saturday he recorded assists on both
SHU goals. The Hobey Baker nominee leads the Pioneers in scoring
with six goals and 13 assists.

Atlantic Hockey Team Notes

Air Force
Despite the split, AFA remained in first place in the league, two
points ahead of RIT and Sacred Heart. However, RIT has two games in
hand while Sacred Heart has four...The Falcons lost a conference
game in overtime for the second time this season, UConn was the
other...AFA has yet to sweep a league series at home this
season...RIT leads the all-time series with AFA, 8-7-2. Ten of the
last 12 games between the two teams have been decided by one goal
or ended in a tie...Brent Olson's six-game scoring streak ended on
Saturday. He has scored a point in 10 of his last 12 games and has
10 goals in his last 12 games. He leads the team with 11 goals and
is second with 22 points...AFA has played seven overtime games this
season and the Falcons a 1-2-4 in those games...The Falcons
continue to limit their opponents shots this season. RIT was held
to 42 shots in the series. AFA is allowing just 23 shots per game
this season. The Falcons have held their opponent under 20 shots
seven times this season...In 18 league games, the opponent has
scored first 12 times. In the six games the Falcons have scored
first, AFA is 5-0-1...Eric Ehn had three assists in the series, Ehn
now has 145 career points in 130 games. He became the top Air Force
scorer of the last 22 years. Ehn moved past Justin Kieffer
(1996-99) and current assistant coach Andy Berg (2000-03) who each
had 142 points and also past Jim Skalko (1970-74) who had 143
points...AFA won the battle of special teams on Friday and is now
20-0-5 over the last two years when winning the battle of special
teams...Air Force steps out of conference next week to face two of
the top five teams in the nation. The Falcons host third-ranked
Denver, Friday, Jan. 18, at 7:05 at the Cadet Ice Arena. The game
will be televised live on Fox Sports Rocky Mountain. Air Force then
travels down I-25 to face fourth-ranked Colorado College, Saturday,
Jan. 19, at 7:07 p.m. at the Colorado Springs World Arena...AFA has
lost 24 straight to Colorado College and is winless in the last 29
games. AFA's last win over CC was in 1985...AFA has lost 19
straight to Denver. The last Falcon win came in 1980.
American International
The American International College ice hockey team added three
points to its 2007-2008 resume last week. The Jackets concluded a
three-game home stand by earning a 3-2 victory over Holy Cross
Tuesday evening. AIC, trailing by two goals after the first period
grabbed a score in the second and two in the third to overcome the
pesky Crusaders. The win was career number 250 for the dean of
Atlantic Hockey, head coach Gary Wright. The Yellow Jackets then
hit the road to play back-to-back overtime contests against Sacred
Heart. Friday night, freshman goalie Dan Ramirez stopped a
career-high 39 shots but AIC fell in overtime, after Pioneer junior
Bear Trapp scored a goal under two minutes into the extra frame.
Saturday night the two teams skated to a 2-2 tie, with all four
goals coming in the second period. It was only the second time in
the last nine match-ups with Sacred Heart that AIC was able to
garner a point from the Pioneers. The Yellow Jackets, who continue
to skate more competitively this year, have 12 conference points,
only three off of last season's 15, with 11 AHA contests remaining
on the schedule. AIC will host Holy Cross on Tuesday before taking
the weekend off.
Army
Owen Meyer, Luke Flicek and Bryce Hollweg are all listed on the
initial Hobey Baker Award ballot ... The Black Knights are 6-11-3,
6-6-2 in conference competition following a pair of losses to
Mercyhurst ... Freshman G Jay Clark made 19 saves during Friday's
3-0 loss ... Zach McKelvie scored his first goal of the season and
Luke Flicek ended a five-game scoreless streak in a 4-2 loss on
Saturday ... Both Army goals came on the power play ... Flicek also
had an assist Saturday, giving his 99 career points ... Sophomore
Joe Spracklen made 27 saves on Saturday ... Senior Bryce Hollweg
had an assist Saturday after sitting out Friday's game with an
injury ... Army explored different options after a flue bug ran
through the locker room. As many as 16 players were affected and
plans were being considered if the team was not healthy enough to
travel. By Thursday morning, most of the bug had past and the team
made the long trek to Pennsylvania ... Senior captain Chase Podsiad
and junior forward Billy Leahy, as well as Chief Warrant Officer 5
Dan Jollota, spoke at Erie Cathedral Prep High School. The three
spoke of the United States Military Academy, the challenges and the
opportunities for success, to a class of Junior ROTC students. More
than a dozen students were in attendance for the 40-minute question
and answer session ... Army begins a nine-game homestand this
weekend with Canisius. Games on Friday and Saturday are set for
7:05 p.m. at Tate Rink.
Bentley
Bentley split a two-game set at Holy Cross, exploding for a 6-4 win
on Friday before suffering a 4-2 setback on Saturday ... Six goals
in a game was a season-high for Bentley ... The Falcons scored
three goals in 18 seconds in the second period of Friday's game,
the fastest Bentley has ever scored three goals in its Division I
history ... Freshman Erik Peterson scored the second two of the
trio and added a short-handed empty-netter in the third period for
his first career hat trick ... Peterson also scored his first
career game-winning goal and first career short-handed goal in the
game ... Junior Tom Dickhudt matched his career best with three
assists in Friday's game ... Sophomore defenseman Bobby Preece
scored his first collegiate goal on Friday ... Bentley has a week
off before hosting Mercyhurst on Jan. 25-26.
Canisius
The Griffs split a pair of games against Connecticut during the
weekend, falling to the Huskies, 3-1, in the opener, before winning
the finale, 4-0. Canisius completed its four-game home-stand at the
Amherst Pepsi Center with a record of 2-1-1. Sophomore Andrew
Loewen continued his impressive play as of late. He recorded 49
saves in the two games, while allowing only two scores. In the
finale, Loewen recorded 26 saves and posted his second shutout of
the season. In his last nine games, Loewen has posted a goals
against average of 1.85 and a save percentage of .945 to help him
jump to the top of the Atlantic Hockey leaderboard. His season GAA
of 2.72 ranks fourth in the league, while his .916 save percentage
ranks third. In league play, Loewen leads all goalies with a goals
against average of 2.03 and a save percentage of .934. Sophomore
Jason Weeks scored two goals in the Griffs' 4-0 victory on
Saturday. Weeks' first goal was a short-handed score, the fourth of
his career. He now shares the school record for short-handed goals
with five other players. After a slow start to the season (three
points in the first 13 games of the season), Weeks is beginning to
heat up. He has recorded eight points and six goals in the Griffs'
last nine games. Junior Spencer Churchill and sophomores David
Cianfrini and Vincent Amigone also scored for the Griffs. Amigone
is the 17th student-athlete to score a goal for Canisius this
season. Of the 17 to post a goal, 13 are either freshmen or
sophomores. The Griffs' penalty kill has excelled during their last
nine games. Canisius has successfully killed 40 of its opponent's
last 41 power plays (97.6 percent) and has scored three
short-handed goals during the stretch. Canisius hits the road for a
pair of games at Army next weekend.
Connecticut
With nearly half of the team being freshman, experience is a
valuable commodity for the Huskies. Charles Solberg provides it as
the team's only senior. He played in his 100th game on Friday, the
only player to have hit the century mark in games played on the
current team. With his 34th career goal Friday, Chris Myhro moved
into sixth all-time on the Husky's career Division I list. In only
19 games, Beau Erickson has made 551 saves, which is already sixth
for a season during the Division I era. He passed his performance
from last season, when he made 548 saves in 21 games. He is also
fifth all-time in career saves in the Division I era with 1,099.
Connecticut has a two-game set with what has become their AHA
playoff rival Mercyhurst this week. The two teams have managed to
pair off in two of the first four quarterfinal games during the
first four years of the Atlantic Hockey Association. Sacred Heart
is the only other team the Huskies have faced twice in the
playoffs.
Holy Cross
Holy Cross went 4-5 on the power play in the 4-2 win over Bentley
on Saturday night. The Crusaders' 25.5 power play percentage is
ranked second in the nation. The Crusaders are 27-106 on power play
opportunities, including a 3-5 performance at Providence (10/20), a
3-7performance at Mercyhurst (10/26), a 3-8 performance against
Army (11/4) and a 3-8 performance against Connecticut (12/1). The
Crusaders had 10 different goal scorers on 10 goals in the three
games on the week. Freshman Jamie Jelinek scored his first
collegiate goal in the game with AIC on Tuesday, while senior Brent
Franklin netted his first collegiate goal in the game against
Bentley on Friday. Freshman forward Everett Sheen's 11 goals lead
the team and are third in the nation by rookies. He has scored 10
goals in the last 11games. Holy Cross is 3-2-3 on its opponent's
home ice so far this season. After Tuesday's game at AIC, the
Crusaders will play four of their next five games at home.
Mercyhurst
The Lakers have now won five successive conference games, the most
since late in the 2004-05 season when they won six straight to
close the regular season and then won the conference playoffs.
Sophomore defenseman Matt Fennell recorded the first multiple-goal
game of his career Saturday. Freshman forward Mike Gurtler's first
shorthanded goal of his career Saturday proved be his first-ever
game-winner. Junior goalie Matt Lundin had his first shutout in a
Mercyhurst uniform Friday. Freshman Ryan Zapolski collected his
second career win between the pipes Saturday by stopping 35 of 37
Army shots. The only two goals allowed came on 5-on-3 and 5-on-4
power plays. The Lakers killed 17 of 19 Army power plays in the two
games, all seven in a 3-0 win Friday and 10 of 12 Saturday. Army
had four 5-on-3 advantages in the two games (full two minutes,
1:18, full two minutes, and 1:43) and scored only one goal. The
Black Knights had nine straight power play chances in Saturday's
game. Freshman forward Steve Cameron had a goal in each game
including his first career power play marker. Senior Ben Cottreau
had three assists in the two games and extended his scoring streak
to seven games. Junior forward Matt Pierce had a point in each
game. Mercyhurst begins a 6-game road trip next weekend at UConn.
The Lakers lead the all-time series 21-7-1. Mercyhurst's shutout of
Army Friday was its first since a 4-0 shutout over Army February
12, 2005, at the Ice Center. The Lakers did not record a shutout in
either 2005-2006 or 2006-2007.
Rochester Institute of Technology
Matt Smith scored two goals, including the game-winner 1:48 into
overtime, giving RIT a 4-3 win over Air Force on Saturday night,
putting the Tigers back into a tie for second place in Atlantic
Hockey with Sacred Heart, just two points behind Air Force. The
Tigers host Sacred Heart this weekend, marking the first time in 54
days (Nov. 25) that the Tigers will have a home game. RIT played 10
games away from Ritter Arena during that span, going 6-3-1, with
big wins over Minnesota and Air Force. Smith's two goals on
Saturday put him two tallies shy of 50 for his career and five
points from 100. RIT's win over Air Force on Saturday knotted the
season series between the two squads at 2-2, with both teams
pulling out an overtime road win. It was RIT's first win at Cadet
Ice Arena since the Tigers moved to Division I in 2005 (1-3-2) and
first there since Dec. 9, 2000. The Tigers now lead the all-time
series 8-7-2 and have played Air Force 12 times since 2005 (5-5-2).
The Tiger power-play, which scored just three goals in its 11
previous games heading into weekend, awoke this weekend with three
goals in nine attempts against Air Force. RIT now has six players
with over 10 points this season.
Sacred Heart
The Pioneers took three of four points from American International
over the weekend in Milford. SHU posted a 5-4 win Friday night and
then settled for a 2-2 draw Saturday night. Junior Bear Trapp
registered four points (two goals and two assists) on the weekend
including the overtime game-winning goal Friday night. The points
put Trapp over the 100 point mark for his career. Sophomores Dave
Jarman and Nick Johnson each tallied two goals and an assist on the
weekend. Sacred Heart is now unbeaten in their last nine games
against AIC, going 7-0-2. Trapp and senior Alex Parent were
nominated for the Hobey Baker Award. Fans can vote from now until
March 9th at Hobey Baker.com. The Pioneers will travel to Rochester
this weekend for a series with RIT. Both games can be heard on WICC
600 AM.
