Atlantic Hockey Weekly Award Winners for Games Through November 12

Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week

OWEN MEYER - ARMY
Sophomore, Forward, Dundee, Ill.
 

Meyer scored four goals over the weekend, including his first collegiate hat trick Saturday, to help Army to a sweep of American International. Meyer scored once Friday in a 4-3 and then added three goals Saturday in a 7-1 victory.

Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Week

ANDREW LOEWEN - CANISIUS
Sophomore, Goaltender, Winnpieg, MAN 

Loewen helped lead the Griffs to victory against Holy Cross in his only appearance of the weekend. Loewen stopped 28 shots, allowing only two goals, to earn his first victory of the season. The sophomore also helped anchor a strong penalty-kill unit. Loewen and the Griffs killed all four of the Crusaders penalties, including 1:08 of five-on-three. Holy Cross entered the game ranked second in the nation on the power play, converting 32.6 percent of its extra-man advantages.

Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week

JAY CLARK - ARMY
Freshman, Goaltender, Baudette, Minn.

Clark, making his first start against a conference opponent, turned away 23 shots and allowed just one goal as Army beat AIC 7-1, Saturday at Tate Rank. Clark, now 1-1-0 this season, made seven saves in the first period, 12 in the second and four in the final period for his first collegiate win.

Atlantic Hockey Honor Roll

Eric Ehn, Air Force (Sr, F, Dexter, Mich.) - After being held scoreless Friday night, Ehn had a hand in all three Air Force goals Saturday, netting a goal and two assists.

Scott Kozlak, Air Force (Fr, F, Duluth, Minn.) - Scored his first career game-winning goal in a 2-1 overtime victory at R.I.T. Friday night.

Jereme Tendler, American Int'l (Sr, F, Viceroy, SASK) - Scored a goal and added an assist in the Jackets 4-3 setback to Army Friday evening while also earning an assist in their loss Saturday night.

Mike McMillan, American Int'l (So, F, Sault Ste. Marie, ONT) - The sophomore tallied a goal and an assist Friday evening, playing well, in a tightly played 4-3 loss to the Black Knights of Army.

Joe Calvi, Bentley (Fr, G, New Lenox, Ill.) - Calvi posted a 1.96 goals against average and .919 save percentage in a 2-1 week, including a 28-save, one-goal performance on Tuesday against Sacred Heart. He now leads Atlantic Hockey for the season in both goals against average and save percentage.

Dustin Cloutier, Bentley (Fr, F, Berkley, Mich.) - Cloutier scored two goals and added two assists this week, including the game-winning goal in Friday's 4-2 win at Connecticut. Cloutier now leads all Atlantic Hockey rookies in scoring with eight points.

Dain Prewitt, Bentley (Jr, F, Westminster, Colo.) - Prewitt scored two short-handed goals and added two assists this week. His two short-handed goals lead Atlantic Hockey and are tied for the national lead.

Kyle Bushee, Canisius (Sr, D, Otsego, Mich.) - Bushee posted four points on one goal and three assists during two games of play against Holy Cross. The senior, who played in his 100th career game on Friday, led the Griffs to victory on Saturday. He had a hand in three of the Griffs' four goals, posting one goal and two assists for a career-best three points. Bushee tallied the game-winning goal and added assists on the Griffs' first and fourth goals.

Pat Kenney, Canisius (Fr, F, Amherst, N.Y.) - Kenney posted a career-best two points in the Griffs' 6-2 victory over RIT. After a tight two periods of play, Kenney helped the Griffs dominate the third period, setting up teammate David Kasch just 59 seconds into the period. He would later add an assist on the Griffs' fifth goal of the evening, finding Peter MacDougall for his first goal of the season.

Michael Coppola, Connecticut (So, F, Old Brookville, N.Y.) - Coppola recorded a goal and two assists on the weekend, including the game winner in overtime Saturday.

Matt Pedemonti, Connecticut (Fr, F, Enfield, Conn.) - Pedemonti scored his first two career goals in a weekend series against Bentley.

JP Martignetti, Holy Cross (Fr, F, Winchester, Mass.) - Martignetti scored his first two collegiate goals in the game against Canisius on Saturday. He is currently fourth on team in points with seven as he has two goals and five assists.

Adam Roy, Holy Cross (Fr, G, Feeding Hills, Mass.) - Roy stopped 19 of 21 shots in Holy Cross' 3-2 win over Canisius on Friday. He is now 2-2-0 on the season.

Ben Cottreau, Mercyhurst (Sr, F, Toronto, ONT) - Cottreau stretched his scoring streak to seven games with his fifth goal of the season in Friday's 6-2 loss at No. 3 Michigan State.

Scott Pitt, Mercyhurst (Fr, F, Ottawa, ONT) - Pitt assisted on both Mercyhurst goals Friday. It was his second 2-point game in his last 3.

Mike Janda, R.I.T. (Fr, F, Glenn Ellyn, Ill.) - Janda picked up his first collegiate goal on Saturday helping RIT to a 4-3 win over Air Force. His oal 2:22 into the first period gave RIT an early lead, the momentum and was the first of his career. He also provided a physical lead along the boards.

Louis Menard, R.I.T. (So, G, Chicoutimi, QUE) - Menard went 1-1-0 last week versus Air Force. The sophomore made 27 saves allowing two goals in a 2-1 loss on Friday. He made 37 more saves on Saturday allowing three goals picking up the win over the Falcons. Menard posted a 2.47 goals against average and a .927 save percentage. He is now 13-1-0 all-time versus AHA opponents.

Matt Smith, R.I.T. (Sr, F, Toronto, ONT) - Smith led RIT to a 1-1-0 record last week over Air Force. He scored RIT's lone goal on Friday in a 2-1 loss. Smith scored two more goals on Saturday, including the game-winner on Saturday. The senior has seven goals in seven games thisseason. Four of his seven goals have come on the power play.

Stefan Drew, Sacred Heart (Jr, G, Oakbank, MAN) - Drew made 37 saves in the Pioneers loss to Bentley Tuesday night, only allowing one goal in the first 59 minutes of the game. His performance included double digit saves in every period.

  Atlantic Hockey Team Notes

Air Force: AFA split at RIT last week in Rochester, winning 2-1 in overtime and losing 4-3 on Saturday...The series was a matchup of the top two teams in the league according to the coaches in the preseason poll. RIT was picked to win the league while AFA was picked second...Eight of the lat nine meetings between AFA and RIT have been decided by one goal or ended in tie...Four of the last eight games have gone into overtime...AFA won in overtime at RIT for the second time in three seasons...The OT game and OT win were the first of the season for the Falcons...Freshman Scott Kozlak scored the first game-winner of his career in OT on Friday...Goalie Andrew Volkening had a career-best 36 saves on Friday, allowing just one goal...On Saturday, AFA fell behind 4-0 in the first period, but came back with the next three goals to make the game interesting at the end...Eric Ehn had a season-best three points in the game...Senior goalie Ian Harper saw his first action of the season as he replaced Volkening in the first period. Harper stopped 26 if the 27 shots he faced in 46 minutes...The win on Friday was Frank Serratore's 154th career victory. He tied the school record for career coaching wins set by John Matchefts (1975-85) and Chuck Delich (1986-97)...Serratore needs one more win for the most coaching victories in AFA hockey history...AFA has now split two conference road series this season and is 2-2 on the road...AFA is 4-1 when getting out shot this season...AFA is 2-0 when winning the battle of special team and 0-3 when losing it...With his three points at RIT, Eric Ehn has moved into 18th place in career scoring at the Academy. He has 129 points (49-80-129) in 116 games...AFA begins a four-game home stand with a two-game AHA series, Nov. 16-17, with UConn...AFA and UConn have played 11 times and the Falcons hold a 9-2 lead in the series...The two teams split the series last season at UConn...UConn is visiting the Academy for the first time wince 2001. AFA is 8-0 vs. the Huskies at home.

American International: American International College dropped a pair of contests to the Army Black Knights over the weekend. Senior captain Jereme Tendler, a Third-Team All- Conference selection last season, finally got on the stat sheet earning three points off of a goal and two assists. Freshman Steve McLeod scored his first collegiate goal and Bryan Jurynec played in his 100th career game Saturday evening. Freshman Tom Mele earned his first collegiate point Friday evening assisting on Mike Field's first-period goal.

Army: The Black Knights improved to 4-4 overall and 4-1 in conference play with a weekend sweep of American International, winning by scores of 4-3 and 7-1 ...Sophomore F Owen Meyer had four goals over the weekend, including his first collegiate hat trick on Saturday. It was the first Army hat trick since Chris Casey accomplished the feat on March 6, 2004 in a loss to Connecticut ... Freshman Joey Ammon scored the game-winner in Friday's game, his first career goal ... Senior defenseman Chris Colvin had a goal and assist over the weekend, his first points of the season ... Luke Flicek picked up four points over the weekend with a goal and three assists. He leads the team with nine assists and 12 points ... Meyer leads the team with seven goals ... Sophomore F Eric Sefchik picked up his first point of the season with an assist in Friday's contest ... Sophomore Ken Rowe scored Friday, his third consecutive game with a goal and added an assist Saturday ... The sweep of AIC was the first for Army since sweeping Bentley last February ... Saturday's game marked the second time this season Army has scored four straight goals, also doing it against Holy Cross ... Army drew just two penalties for the second time this season ... Army has scored three goals in three different periods, doing it twice against AIC and also at Holy Cross ... Army now leads the all-time series with AIC 43-14-3 ... Army has six power play goals on the season ... Luke Flicek now has 58 career assists ... 1,672 fans turned out at Tate Rink, a season-high for attendance ... Chris Blair had two assists for his first career multiple-point game of his career ... Army will host Bentley for a pair of games this weekend.

Bentley: With a four-game unbeaten streak, the Falcons matched their program's Division I record with wins over Sacred Heart on Tuesday and Connecticut on Friday before falling to Connecticut on Saturday ... Sophomore Dain Prewitt scored short-handed goals in two straight games, on Tuesday and Friday ... Prewitt is the only player in Atlantic Hockey with two short-handed points and is tied for the national lead in that category ... Prewitt now has five career short-handed goals, claiming the Bentley Division I record and tied for third in Bentley's program history ... Freshman Joe Calvi leads Atlantic Hockey with a 1.75 goals against average and .935 save percentage ... Freshman Dustin Cloutier netted his first career game-winning goal to lift Bentley over Connecticut on Friday ... Cloutier leads Atlantic Hockey rookies in scoring with eight points and classmate Erik Peterson is tied for second with seven points ... The Falcons travel to West Point, N.Y., for a rematch of last season's conference quarterfinals with Army next weekend ... Bentley is currently leading the conference and Army is one point behind.

Canisius: The Griffs split a pair of Atlantic Hockey games this past weekend, falling to Holy Cross, 3-2, on Friday before defeating the Crusaders, 4-2, on Saturday. Senior Kyle Bushee led the Griffs during the weekend. Bushee, who played in his 100th-career game on Friday, registered an assist in the opener and followed it up with three points on one goal and two assist in the finale. Bushee is one of four Canisius defenders that are contributing to the Griffs' offense. Bushee (1-5-6), sophomore Carl Hudson (3-3-6), sophomore Chris Forsman (3-2-5) and sophomore Dave Cianfrini (4-1-5) all rank among the Atlantic Hockey top nine for defensemen scoring. Junior Spencer Churchill recorded an assist in the Griffs' victory on Saturday. Churchill now has seven assists on the season, which is tied for third in the league and also matches his career-high total. Sophomore Josh Heidinger also posted a goal in both of the games this past weekend, extending his goal-scoring streak to a career-best four games. Heidinger is one of four Canisius players tied for fifth in Atlantic Hockey with four goals, joining Cianfrini, senior David Kasch and freshman Vincent Scarsella. With the victory on Saturday, Canisius remained undefeated during the finale of two-game sets, improving to 2-0-2. On the reverse side, the Griffs fell to 0-4-0 during the openers. Six of the Griffs' Nine games this season have come right down to the wire, being decided by one or fewer goals. Canisius is 0-4-2 in games decided by one or fewer goals, while both of its victories are by at least two goals (four and two). The Griffs have played two of the power-play units in their past three games and the penalty kill has excelled for Canisius. The Griffs held RIT and Holy Cross for a combined 2-for-17 (11.8 percent) during its last three games. RIT, which went 1-for-9, entered last Saturday's game as the number one power-play team in the country, converting 38.1 percent of its extra-man opportunities. Holy Cross, which was 1-for-8 during the weekend, owned the second-ranked power-play unit, converting 33.3 percent of its one-man advantages. Canisius continues Atlantic Hockey play next weekend, squaring off for two games at American International.

Connecticut: Saturday was the first OT win for the Huskies since they defeated RIT 4-3 on January 19, 1997. Former Husky Matt Scherer scored the winner in that game. UConn had been 0-1-2 in overtime since then. The goal was also Michael Coppola's first career overtime and first career game winning goal. UConn's strength this season has been it's penalty kill. Teams are 4 for 37 this season on the power play against the Huskies. That is a conversion rate of only 10.8 percent. Last season, opponent's conversion rates against Connecticut was 19.3 percent.

Holy Cross: Senior Dale Reinhardt became the 38th Crusader to reach the 100 career point mark with two assists against Canisius on Saturday giving him 101 points (41 goals & 60 assists). He is currently ranked eighth on the all-time Holy Cross Division I points and goals list, while he is 10th in assists. Reinhardt has recorded at least one point in seven consecutive games. Freshman J.P. Martignetti scored his first two collegiate goals in the game with Canisius on Saturday. He is currently fourth on team in points with seven as he has two goals and five assists. His 1.17 points per game are ranked fourth in the nation by rookies. Holy Cross' 29.8 power play percentage is ranked third in the country.

Mercyhurst: The two games at No. 3 Michigan State were the first ever between the teams. Mercyhurst has now scored at least one power play goal in its last seven games. Sophomore Neil Graham and Nick Vandenbeld registered their first goals of the season in the two games at Michigan State. Vandenbeld's last three goals, dating to last season, have come on the power play. Sophomore forward Chris Risi and sophomore defenseman Cullen Eddy recorded assists Saturday, their first points of the season. Senior Ben Cottreau's seven-game scoring streak came to an end Saturday. Freshman Scott Pitt had a pair of assists Friday, his second 2-point game in the last three. He was blanked Saturday. The Lakers have allowed opponents to score retaliation goals less than a minute later three times in the last four games. Game one at Air Force: after taking a 2-0 lead early in the second, Air Force scored: 31 seconds later to close to within 2-1. Game one at MSU: after Mercyhurst scored to cut MSU's lead to 3-1 in the second, the Spartans scored 48 seconds later. Game two at MSU: After the Lakers scored to make it 5-2 in the third, MSU scored just 45 seconds later to close the scoring. Mercyhurst concludes a 6-game road trip at RIT next weekend. The Tigers won 3 of 4 last season and lead the all-time series 19-11-3. After RIT, Mercyhurst will play 9 of its next 10 at home, stretching into 2008.

Rochester Institute of Technology: The Tigers snapped a two-game losing streak with a 4-3 win on Saturday. The Tigers came out on fire, scoring three goals in the 12 minutesof the first period. RIT's penalty kill was outstanding this weekend holding Air Force to 1-for-15 with the man advantage. The Tigers held the Falcons scoreless in six attempts on Saturday and allowed one goal in nine chances on Saturday. The Tigers power play got on track on Saturday, going 2-for-8. Prior to that the Tiger had gone 12 straight power plays without a goal. RIT went 2-for-12 on the weekend. The four goals in the first period was the most goals scored in a period this season. Matt Smith has scored seven goals in seven games this season. Four of his seven goals have come on the power play. Sophomore defenseman Dan Ringwald had a goal and an assist on Saturday and is third on the team in scoring with seven points.

Sacred Heart: The Pioneers lost to Bentley, 3-1, at Ryan Arena Tuesday night. The loss snapped a four game unbeaten streak for the Pioneers and was the first time SHU had fallen to the Falcons in their last four meetings. Junior Bear Trapp scored SHU's only goal. Goaltender Stefan Drew made 37 saves, including double digit stops in each period. The Pioneers will not play another league game until November 23rd, a stretch of 17 days. SHU will travel to Niagara for a two game set Friday and Saturday. It will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.
