Atlantic Hockey Weekly Award Winners for Games Through November 18

Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week

 

BRYCE HOLLWEG - ARMY
Senior, Forward, Langley, BC

Hollweg netted his first collegiate hat trick and finished with five points to help the Black Knights to a 7-2 win over Bentley and a weekend split. Hollweg, who was presented with the 2006-07 Scholar Athlete of the Year award for forwards prior to the game, scored once in the first period and twice in the second. He also assisted on a pair of goals for Army's first five point game since 2003.

DAN RAMIREZ - AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL
Freshman, Goaltender, Rochester, N.Y.

Ramirez played tremendous in two starts over the weekend.Friday evening he stopped 22 shots only giving up one goal while earning his first collegiate victory. He stopped an onslaught of Golden Griffin attempts to tie the score in the third-frame, turning back 16 third-stanza shots. Ramirez posted 26 saves Saturday night, allowing only two goals and earning his second victory of his college career and season.

BRANDON COCCIMIGLIO - MERCYHURST
Freshman, Forward, Burlington, ONT
 

Recorded his first career hat trick in Friday's come-from-behind 6-3 win at RIT. His power play goal put MC ahead 2-1 after a period. He later tied the game at 3-3 with an even strength goal early in the third and finished the hat trick with an empty net goal.

Atlantic Hockey Honor Roll

Scott Kozlak, Air Force (Fr, F, Duluth, Minn.) - Scored a goal on Friday and had an assist on Saturday...Has scored in four of his last five games...+2 on the weekend...Five shots in the series.

Steve McLeod, American Int'l (Fr, F, Atikokan, ONT) - McLeod was one of three Yellow Jackets to score a goal and add an assist Friday evening. He also earned an assist Saturday evening totaling a goal and two assists for the weekend.

Mike McMillan, American Int'l (So, F, Sault Ste. Marie, ONT) - McMillan tallied three goals and an assist in the Jackets weekend sweep of Canisius College. McMillan scored a goal and added an assist in AIC's 3-1 win Friday evening and scored twice in a 4-2 victory Saturday evening.

Jereme Tendler, American Int'l (Sr, F, Viceroy, SASK) - Tendler scored once and posted three assists over the weekend. Tendler netted an important goal to make the score 3-1 when the Jackets were clinging to a 2-1 lead with the Golden Griffins pressuring in the third-period. Tendler added an assist in that game and two more on Saturday.

Joe Calvi, Bentley (Fr, G, New Lenox, Ill.) - Calvi posted a .913 save percentage and 2.75 goals against average this weekend, earning the win in Saturday's game.

Tom Dickhudt, Bentley (Jr, F, Woodbury, Minn.) - scored the game-winning goal with 1:06 to go in regulation in Saturday's 3-2 win over Army.

Erik Peterson, Bentley (Fr, F, Shorewood, Minn.) - Peterson scored a goal and added an assist this weekend.

Josh Heidinger, Canisius (So, F, Buffalo, N.Y..) - Heidinger totaled three points during the weekend on two goals and an assist. The sophomore scored a goal in both games against American International, extending his goal-scoring streak to a school-record six games.

Andrew Loewen, Canisius (So, G, Winnipeg, MAN) - Loewen saw a majority of time in goal during the weekend, posting a goals against average of 1.95 and a save percentage of .903. On Saturday, Loewen played the final 36:04 and did not allow a goal.

Vincent Scarsella, Canisius (Fr, F, Lackawanna, N.Y.) - Scarsella posted two assists during the weekend against American International. The rookie now ranks fourth in freshmen scoring in Atlantic Hockey, totaling seven points.

Michael Coppola, Connecticut (So, F, Old Brookville, N.Y.) - Coppola netted the game-winning goal in a 3-2 overtime victory Saturday night against Air Force.

Beau Erickson, Connecticut (So, G, Hinton, Iowa) - Erickson stopped 59 out of 64 shots.

Kerry Bowman, Mercyhurst (Sr, F, Leamington, ONT) - Had three assists in two games at RIT.

Matt Lundin, Mercyhurst (Jr, G, Apple Valley, Minn.) - Lundin celebrated his return to the lineup after a 9-game absence with a 39-save performance in a 6-3 win at RIT Friday and followed that with a 51 save effort in a 3-2 overtime loss the next night. All told, he stopped a combined 90 of 96 shots in the two games (.938). Two of the six goals allowed were power play. He was named the game's third and second stars respectively. Lundin's 51 stops Saturday were the most since Jordan Wakefield made 54 saves against Brown last December.

Simon Lambert, R.I.T. (Sr, F, Ste.-Therese, QUE) - Lambert helped RIT to a 1-1-0 record last week versus Mercyhurst. On Friday the senior co-captain tallied two of RIT's three goals in a 6-3 loss to the Lakers. He scored the game-winner in overtime on Saturday as RIT rebounded with a 3-2 win over Mercyhurst.

Adam DeJong, Sacred Heart (Fr, F, Kitchner, ONT) - DeJong scored both of Sacred Heart's goals in SHU's loss to Niagara Friday night. They were the first goals of the rookie's collegiate career.

Nick Johnson, Sacred Heart (So, F, Windsor, Conn.) - Johnson tallied a goal and an assist in Sacred Heart's weekend series at Niagara. He scored SHU's only goal Saturday night and had an assist on the Pioneers' second goal Friday night. Johnson leads the team in scoring with seven points, including four goals and three assists. He has registered at least one point in each of his last five games.

  Atlantic Hockey Team Notes

Air Force: AFA split a league series for the fourth straight time...AFA suffered its first overtime loss of the season on Saturday and is now 1-1 in OT this season...Eric Ehn, Scott Kozlak, Frank Schiavone and Jeff Hajner all had two points in the UConn series...AFA suffered its first ever loss at home to UConn. Prior to Saturday, Air Force was 9-0 vs. UConn at Cadet Ice Arena...Freshman Sean Bertsch scored his first career point with an assist on Friday...Ehn netted the game-winner on Friday, the seventh game-winner of his career and first of the season...AFA's power play was 0-for-10 in the UConn series. The Falcons were a -3 on special team on the weekend, allowing two power-play goals on Friday and a short-handed goal on Saturday that was the game-winner...AFA's power play is now 5-for-64 on the season, 7.9 percent...Saturday's crowd of 2,136 was a season high...Frank Serratore earned his 155th win at Air Force on Friday. He now owns the most hockey wins in Air Force history, surpassing John Matchefts (1975-85) and Chuck Delich (1986-97) who each had 154 wins at the Academy...With his two points on the weekend, Ehn moved into a tie for 16th on the career scoring list at Air Force. Ehn has 50 goals, 81 assists and 131 points to tie with Mark DeGironimo (1992-96)...AFA hosts Holy Cross next week at the Cadet Ice Arena. AFA holds a 10-4-4 lead in the series that began in 1993. However, in the last 11 games between the two teams, each team has won four with three ties...Last season, the teams skated to back-to-back 2-2 overtime ties in the regular season series in Worcester...AFA beat Holy Cross, 3-0, in the AHA quarterfinals last season at AFA.

American International: AIC won a pair of contests over the Golden Griffins of Canisius College this past weekend. For the Jackets, it was their first weekend sweep since January 6th and 7th of the 2005-2006 season, when they defeated Canisius 2-1 and 5-2. The wins were especially noteworthy considering the Jackets failed to earn a victory until their 13th game last season. Senior Greg Genovese played in his 100th career contest over the weekend. Freshman T.J. Smith scored his first collegiate goal Saturday evening. Freshman Dan Ramirez earned the first two wins of his college career, stopping 22 shots Friday night and 26 shots Saturday evening. Sophomore Mike McMillan was the high-scorer for AIC notching three goals and an assist in two games. Freshman Steve McLeod was one of three Yellow Jackets to notch a goal and an assist Friday evening while also adding an assist Saturday night. Jereme Tendler notched a goal and an assist Friday while also chipping in with two helpers Saturday evening.

Army: The Black Knights split their home weekend series with Bentley winning 7-2 and dropping a 3-2 contest on Saturday. Bryce Hollweg had his first career hat trick and two assists while Owen Meyer also had five points with five assists in the 7-2 win, Army's second consecutive game with seven goals. Meyer, who had a hat trick last weekend, and Cody Omilusik scored goals in Saturday's loss ... Friday night marked the first time Army players netted back-to-back hat tricks since Bill Morrison and Ian Winter did it during the 1993-94 season ... Friday was the first time Army has scored at least seven goals in success games since beating Nichols (14-1) and Scranton (7-0) during the 1998-99 season ... Hollweg was presented with the 2006-07 Atlantic Hockey Association Scholar Athlete of the Year award prior to Friday's game and then went out and racked up three goals and two assists for the first five-point game since Chad Fifield did in 2003 against Ryerson ... Army will travel to Rochester Institute of Technology for the first time this weekend with games Friday and Saturday.

Bentley: Bentley remained atop the Atlantic Hockey standings after earning a split with Army ... Saturday's 3-2 victory was the Falcons' first win at West Point in nine games, dating back to March 2004 ... Junior Tom Dickhudt scored a game-winning goal to break a tie in the waning minutes of regulation for the second time this season. He netted the game-winner with 1:06 remaining in Saturday's win at Army after scoring a final minute game-winner on Nov. 6 vs. Sacred Heart ... Dickhudt moved into the tie for the league lead ... Junior Dain Prewitt extended a point-scoring streak to six games with an assist on Friday and a goal on Saturday ... Freshman Erik Peterson scored a goal and an assist this weekend and classmate Dustin Cloutier tallied an assist on Friday to move both into a tie for the league lead in freshman scoring with nine points this season ... Joe Calvi remains in the league lead with a .932 save percentage ... The Falcons have a non-conference tilt on Saturday at Dartmouth ... Bentley has never played the Big Green before.

Canisius: The Griffs lost a pair of Atlantic Hockey games to American International, falling to the Yellow Jackets 3-1 and 4-2. Sophomore Josh Heidinger scored a goal in both games to extend his goal-scoring streak to six games. His run of six games matches the school record since moving to Division I. Rob Martin also scored in six-consecutive games to open the 2001-02 season. Heidinger currently ranks sixth in Atlantic Hockey in points (12), third in goals (six) and 10th in assists (six). Senior Kyle Bushee and sophomore Carl Hudson both posted assists in the series, giving the Canisius defenders 27 points during the 2007-08 season. Only three defensive units have totaled more points in the country than Canisius' 27 (Wisconsin - 37, Michigan State - 32, Miami - 28). Four Griffs' rank in the Atlantic Hockey top seven among defensemen scoring. Bushee (1g, 6a) and Hudson (3g, 4a) are both tied for second, while David Cianfrini (4g, 1a) and Chris Forsman (3g, 2a) are both tied for seventh. Sophomore Andrew Loewen saw a majority of action in goal during the weekend. In his last four appearances, Loewen has picked up his game, posting a goals against average of 1.93 and a save percentage of .928. In Friday's game, the Griffs were not whistled for a penalty for the first time since the team moved to Division I. The two total penalties in the game are also a low for a Canisius game. On Saturday, freshman Derek Danowski also scored for the Griffs. Danowski has totaled one point in seven of his last eight games and ranks fifth in the league among freshmen with seven points. Teammate Vincent Scarsella ranks fourth among rookies with eight points. The Griffs take a break from league action to square off against No. 1 Miami in a two-game series.

Connecticut: Michael Coppola had never had a game wining goal (regulation or otherwise) before last weekend. He's had two overtime game winners in the last three games. Despite the early struggles of the youth, the team has matched last year's senior oriented lineup with a 3-6-0 start. The Huskies closed that out last year 13-12-2 finish. Of the teams 55 points so far, 40 (73 percent) belong to freshman and sophomores. Having at least one year experience has been important to UConn however, as the three leaders are two sophomores (Coppola with nine points and Ochoa with eight) and a junior (Erickson with eight).

Holy Cross: Holy Cross' 29.8 power play percentage is ranked first in the nation. The Crusaders are 14-47 on power play opportunities. Sophomore Ryan Driscoll's four power play goals are tied for eighth in the country. Senior Dale Reinhardt became the 38th Crusader to reach the 100 career point mark with two assists against Canisius on Nov. 10 giving him 101 points (41 goals & 60 assists). He is currently ranked eighth on the all-time Holy Cross Division I points and goals list, while he is 10th in assists. Reinhardt has recorded at least one point in seven consecutive games. Freshman J.P. Martignetti's 1.17 points per game are ranked sixth in the nation by rookies.

Mercyhurst: The line of Ben Cottreau, Brandon Coccimiglio, and Kerry Bowman produced four goals and four assists Friday. Bowman's two assists Friday represented his first multiple-point game since January 15, 2005 when he scored twice at home in 6-3 win over AIC. Meanwhile, junior defenseman Bobby Phillips registered his second career goal Friday, sophomore Neil Graham collected his second career game-winner, and freshman Scott Pitt recorded his third 2-point game in his last five. Mercyhurst's six goals Friday represented a season high and the two power play goals marked the seventh straight game the team produced at least one. The streak ended Saturday as the Lakers were blanked in four power play chances. The four third-period goals Friday represented a one-period best this season and the most since October 21, 2006, when the Lakers rallied with four in the final period for a 7-5 win at Holy Cross. Freshman Mike Gurtler, a Rochester native, scored his first collegiate goal Saturday. Junior goalie Matt Lundin celebrated his return to the lineup after a 9-game absence with a 39-save performance in a 6-3 win Friday and followed that with a 51 save effort in a 3-2 overtime loss the next night. All told, he stopped a combined 90 of 96 shots in the two games (.938). Two of the six goals allowed were power play. He was named the game's third and second stars respectively. Lundin's 51 stops Saturday were the most since Jordan Wakefield made 54 saves against Brown last December. After starting the season with 10 of its first 12 games on the road, the Lakers play 9 of their next 10 at home starting next weekend when Sacred Heart visits Friday and Saturday. The Pioneers lead the all-time series 14-10-2 and have won the last six meetings.

Rochester Institute of Technology: Head Coach Wayne Wilson won his 150th game as head coach of the Tigers. He is 150-71-16 all-time at RIT. He is second all-time in wins at RIT behind Eric Hoffberg who had 188 career wins. Wilson is one of only three coaches at RIT to have 100+ wins. RIT went 2-for-9 on the power play last weekend, including a 2-for-5 performance on Friday. The Tigers fired a season-high 54 shots on Saturday and a staggering 96 in two games. RIT is 13/51 (25.5%) with the power play this season. The penalty kill unit has killed off 51 of 58 (87.9%) power plays this season. The overtime win was the first for RIT at home since 1997. It was the first overtime win of any kind for the Tigers since November 2, 2002 at Postdam State. The Tigers split versus Army last season.

Sacred Heart: The Pioneers lost a pair of games to Niagara, falling at Dwyer Arena by scores of 4-2 and 2-1. Freshman Adam DeJong scored the Pioneers two goals Friday night, his first collegiate tallies. Sophomore Nick Johnson had a goal and an assist on the weekend and now has registered one point in each of his last five games. Freshman Olivier St. Onge made 35 saves in his second collegiate start Saturday night. The Pioneers are now 1-11-4 all time against teams from the CHA. Sacred Heart returns to league play this weekend when they travel to Mercyhurst for a two game series. The Pioneers won all four meetings with the Lakers last year and have won seven of the last eight games between the teams.
