WEST POINT, N.Y. - Josh Kassel didn't allow a goal, Eric Sefchik had four points, six different players scored goals and Army racked up 51 shots on goal on the way to a 6-0 victory over Connecticut, Saturday in front of nearly 2,300 fans in an Atlantic Hockey Association matchup at Tate Rink.
Sefchik posted a career-best four points off of a goal and three assists and Drew Pierson, Jeff Fearing, Owen Meyer, Robb Ross and Joey Ammon also scored goals as the Black Knights improved to 11-12-3 overall and 11-7-2 in conference play.
Kassel made 26 saves and posted his fifth career shutout to help Army to its third weekend sweep this season. Kassel, a junior from Greensburg, Pa., made 13 saves in the first period, nine in the second and four in the third for his first shutout since beating Connecticut 3-0 on January 27, 2007. That win against Connecticut was also the last time Army shutout an opponent.
"Josh stepped up tonight," said Army head coach Brian Riley. "Connecticut had some good chances but Josh came up big for us."
Army fired off 51 shots on goal, including 21 during the first period and a season-best 22 during the second and won its fifth straight contest.
Ross and Pierson also had multiple-point nights with an assist while Chris Colvin, Luke Flicek, Lyle Gal and Aaron Anderson were also credited with assists.
"It was good to see some many guys contribute," said Riley. "We moved the puck well today. All of the lines looked good and coming down the stretch, we need more than one line to score."
Connecticut's goalie Beau Erickson made 45 saves but the Huskies fell to 8-15-3 overall and 7-10-3 in league competition.
"The game plan was to get as many shots on goal as possible," said Riley. "Erickson is so good; you really need to get the puck to the net."
The Black Knights, who had 41 shots in their last two contests, came out firing again with a then-season-best 21 shots on goal during the first period on Saturday. Pierson scored his second career five minutes into the contest, crashing the next and poking in a goal with assists from Sefchik and Ross.
Fearing extended the lead to 2-0 with less than three minutes remaining in the period. During a short-handed situation, Fearing stole an errant pass from Erickson and shot around the goaltender from outside the face-off circle for his third goal of the season. It was Fearing second short-handed goal of the season and third overall.
Army kept up its offensive push and fired 22 shots on net during a three-goal second period. Sefchik added to his point total with his second goal of the season off of assists from Colvin and Flicek.
Meyer pushed the lead to 4-0 with his team-leading 14th goal of the season. Flicek and Sefchik registered the assists. Ross' third goal of the season came 19 seconds later, with Pierson and Sefchik credited with assists.
Ammon, a freshman, closed the scoring with his third goal of the season coming three minutes into the final period. Linemates Gal and Anderson were credited with the assists.
