WEST POINT, N.Y. - Robb
Ross scored early in the third period but neither team was able
to net a goal the rest of the way as Army and Holy Cross skated to
a 1-1 tie, Saturday night in Atlantic Hockey Association action at
a sold out Tate Rink.
A capacity crowd of 2,674 was on hand as Army extended its unbeaten streak to seven games by skating to its third tie of the season.
Army is now 12-12-4 overall and 12-7-3 and in second place in the conference standings, behind RIT. Holy Cross is now 8-13-7, 7-11-4 in conference games.
Ross helped erase a 1-0 deficit 1:58 into the final period but the score remained the same as Army won the regular season series with Holy Cross 3-1-1. Matt Hickey and Drew Pierson registered assists for Army.
"I'm pleased we were able to steal a point after trailing in the third period," Army head coach Brian Riley said. "It seems like Ross does that once a year, scoring from behind the net. He throws it off the goalie and sees if something good happens."
Army goalie Josh Kassel made 27 saves and had his streak of seven straight scoreless periods stopped in the first.
"Josh gives us a chance to win every night," said Riley. "He's stopping all the shots he should and then some."
Holy Cross, which was ranked No. 4 in the nation on the power play, was 1-of-5 in extra man chances, and held a 28-24 advantage in shots on goal. Goalie Adam Roy made 23 saves.
Army had three more shots in the final period (9-6) and each team had three shots in the extra five minutes but the stalemate remained.
Holy Cross jumped out to a 1-0 lead with its vaunted power play. Brodie Sheahan netted his 10th goal of the season for a 1-0 lead with five minutes left in the first period.
The Black Knights tied the game two minutes into the final period when Ross scored from an impressive angle. Taking passes from Hickey and Pierson, Ross shot from behind the net and banked in the shot to tie the game.
Army continued to add pressure but could not get the game-winner and moved to 6-0-1 in its last seven contests.
