MINNEAPOLIS, MN -- The RIT (7-6-3) men's hockey team trailed Boston
College 1-0 heading into the third period but allowed five goals in
the third falling to 14th ranked Eagles 6-0 in the championship
game of the Dodge Holiday Classic at the University of
Minnesota.
"They're a really good team," stated RIT Head Coach Wayne Wilson.
"We stuck with them for two periods but Gerbe's goal really
hurt."
Gerbe's goal three minutes into the third was a back-breaker for
the Tigers. He broke in and beat Louis Menard with a nice move,
making it 2-0 Boston College. Gerbe had a goal and an assist on the
day and gave the Tigers fits all game long.
The Eagles poored it on from there, tallying four more times. Pat
Gannon, Anthony Aiello, Ben Smith and Carl Sneep added goals in the
third to break the game open.
The Tigers generated some good scoring chances off their fore-check
in the first period. One of the best came with 8:11 to play.
Sean Murphy (Owatoona, MN)
carried the puck behind the BC net. He sent a pass up to
Dan Ringwald (Oakville, ON) at the point who fired
a shot. The rebound came to Murphy and he sent another shot on goal
but BC's John Fuse covered the puck.
"We had some chances early on and couldn't capitalize," stated
Wilson.
The Eagles scored first on a power play goal with 2:33 remaining in
the first period. Joe Whitney fired a wrist shot the beat
Louis Menard (Chicoutimi, PQ) on the glove side.
Menard never saw the puck as he was screened in front.
There was no scoring in the second period despite some good scoring
chances generated by both teams. Andrew Favot (King City,
ON) and Sean Murphy had two really
scoring chances for the Tigers. Favot had a one-timer from in front
sail over the top of the net.
Murphy had a chance late in the period on the power play.
Brent Patry (Ottawa, ON) fed Murphy who was
cutting to the front of the net and his tip just got over the
cross-bar and out of play.
RIT killed off three power plays by Boston College in the second
period.
RIT was out shot by the Eagles 44-24. Louis Menard took the loss
allowing six goals and making 38 saves.
The Tigers return to action on January fourth when they travel to
Worcester, Massachusetts to face Atlantic Hockey foe Holy Cross.
Game time on Friday night is at 7:05 pm.
