
Four Atlantic Hockey Student-Athletes Earn ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Honors
Four student-athletes with ties to Atlantic Hockey have earned ESPN
The Magazine Academic All-America® All-District At-Large honors
as selected by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of
America). Frank Schiavone, Air Force, was a First Team
District VII member, while Bryce Hollweg, Army; Andrew Loewen,
Canisius and Alexandre Parent, Sacred Heart were Second Team
District I honorees.
To be nominated athletes must be at least a sophomore, a starter or
significant reserve with a cumulative grade-point average of at
least 3.20. The at-large team includes athletes from golf,
lacrosse, hockey, fencing, gymnastics, water polo and wrestling.
Schools are limited to three nominations.
Schiavone, a senior from Oceanside, N.Y., played in 120 career
hockey games and had 23 points. He had a career-best five goals
this season as he helped lead the Falcons to their second
consecutive league championship and NCAA Tournament. A management
major, Schiavone is a two-time academic all-conference selection.
He carries a 3.659cumulative grade point average and a 3.8 GPA in
his major. He was the cadet in charge of the obstacle course during
Basic Cadet Training this past summer. In the fall of 2007, he was
the honor officer and chief of inspections in his squadron and has
been on the dean's list every semester. An assistant captain,
Schiavone has been active in the community, assisting with the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation each of the last four years.
He has helped with the annual Walk for the Cure which has raised
more than $500,000 in the last four years. The native of Oceanside,
N.Y., has also led a group of players in aiding the JDRF with the
annual gala. He has also spoke to schools in the Colorado Springs
area about the importance of school and teamwork and the skills of
hockey.
A Management major from Langley, British Columbia, S.C., Hollweg earned his first CoSIDA Academic award with a 3.647 grade-point average. Hollweg served as one of two team captains and played a key role in the Black Knights' winning the Atlantic Hockey Association regular season title. He scored 11 goals and handed out 31 assists while scoring four game-winning goals. He is the first three-time captain in Army hockey history and was named the Atlantic Hockey Association Scholar Athlete of the Year as a junior.
Loewen, a goalie for the Canisius hockey team, led the Griffs during the 2007-08 season. He was named the team MVP after recording a goals against average of 2.94 and a save percentage of .911. Against league competition, Loewen ranked second in Atlantic Hockey with a .920 save percentage and fourth with a goals against average of 2.54. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native had a number of record-setting performances during the month of January, leading to Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Month accolades. He set school monthly records with a goals against average of 0.99 and a save percentage of .969 while also recording a school-record 201:00 scoreless streak. Loewen led all goalies in the league with four weekly honors. The sophomore holds a 3.94 grade point average while majoring in business entrepreneurship at Canisius. Last season, he was named to the Atlantic Hockey Academic All-Star Team for having the highest GPA in the league at his position.
Parent graduated from Sacred Heart in May with a Bachelor's
Degree in business and is currently working to complete his
Master's degree as well. He has been a three time member of the
Atlantic Hockey All-Academic team. On the ice, Parent was a
three time All-Atlantic Hockey Award winner. As a freshman in
2004-2005 he was named to the league's All-Rookie team and garnered
second team All-League honors during his sophomore season. In the
recently completed 2007-08 season, Parent was named first team
All-AHA and was the recepient of the league's Individual
Sportsmanship Award for his outstanding conduct on the ice.
Parent led the Pioneers in scoring this year with 19 goals and 21
assists for 40 points on the year. He finished his SHU career with
87 assists putting him second in SHU history. He also has 141
career points, good for third place in school history.
The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)
selects the Academic All-America At-Large team out of a pool of
student-athletes from the following sports: women's bowling,
women's crew, men's and women's fencing, women's field hockey,
men's and women's golf, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and
women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's
rifle, men's and women's skiing, men's and women's swimming, men's
and women's tennis, men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo
and men's wrestling.
