Team Notes
Air Force: Air Force hosts Quinnipiac this weekend in the regular-season opener. Air Force and Quinnipiac have played seven times and the Falcons hold a 4-3 lead in the series that began in 1999. AFA is 4-1 in games played at the Cadet Ice Arena. Air Force plays six non-conference games this season and all six teams are currently in the top 25 in the nation with two in the top five. The only team that is not ranked, but is receiving votes, is RIT (23rd/18th). Boston College (2/3), Minnesota (5/4), Colorado College (11/11), Denver (13/12) and Quinnipiac (14/15) create one of the strongest non-conference schedules in the nation. Minnesota and RIT are potential opponents in the second game of the Minnesota tournament. The above rankings are listed as USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine/USCHO.com/CSTV. Five of the top six scorers will return from last season, including leading scorer Eric Ehn (24-40-64), No. 3 scorer Mike Phillipich (16-28-44), No. 4 scorer Jeff Hajner (13-14-27), No. 5 scorer Josh Schaffer (7-14-21) and No. 6 scorer, defenseman Michael Mayra (1-15-16). AFA returns 69 percent of its goals and 72 percent of its point production. Head coach Frank Serratore is nearing several milestones. Serratore has 149 wins at Air Force and needs just one for his 150th win. He also needs just six wins to become the all-time winningest coach at Air Force. Chuck Delich (1986-97) and John Matchefts (1975-85) each won 154 games at Air Force. Serratore already holds the record for the most Division I wins at the Academy with 118. Serratore also enters the 2007-08 season with 198 career wins, needing just two to reach the 200-win plateau. Eric Ehn is quickly climbing the career scoring list. Ehn, a senior, is tied for 26th on the career scoring list with 121 points in 108 games. He needs on point to become the first Falcon since 1999 to crack the top 25 in career scoring. AFA won both of its exhibition games this past week. The Falcons beat Calgary, 4-1, on Oct. 8 behind two goals from Eric Ehn. The other two goals were scored by freshmen Sean Bertsch and Derrick Burnett. Volkening made 20 saves for the Falcons. AFA defeated the U.S. Under 18 Team, 4-3, on Oct. 13. Four different Falcons scored as Mike Phillipich, Brett Nylander, Blake Page and Greg Flynn all lit the lamp. Freshman defenseman Brad Sellers had three assists. Andrew Volkening had 19 saves for the Falcons.
American International: AIC is the last team to take to the ice in either an exhibition or regular season contest this season, as the Yellow Jackets will open their 2007-08 schedule at Connecticut this Friday night. AIC faced the Huskies four times last season and lost the season series 2-1-1 to Connecticut. Overall the Huskies holds a 37-35-8 advantage over the Yellow Jackets.
Army: Army opened its challenging schedule with a pair of
losses at Bemidji State ... The Black Knights, who host RPI Friday
in its home-opener at 7:05 p.m., lost by scores of 2-1 and 3-0 in
Minnesota over the weekend ... sophomore Owen Meyer scored the Army
goal with Jeff Fearing credited with the assist ... junior Josh
Kassel made 22 saves in Friday's 2-1 loss, including 11 in the
third period ... freshman Jay Clark turned away 25 shots Saturday
in his first collegiate appearance. Clark faced 26 shots and
allowed one goal. The other two scores came in an empty-net in the
final minute ... senior captain Chase Podsiad played in his 100th
and 101st career Army games over the weekend. He is the sixth Black
Knight player on the roster who had played in at least 100 games,
joining Bryce Hollweg (105), Jeff Fearing (104), Chris Colvin
(104), Luke Flicek (103) and Robb Ross (103) ... Zach McKelvie had
a chance to play against his brothers over the weekend. His twin,
Chris, is a freshman at Bemidji State while his older brother,
Ryan, is a second-year graduate assistant. It is the first time the
brothers have competed against each other on the ice.
Bentley: Bentley lost its season opener, 4-0, at
Rensselaer ... Junior Jason Kearney made 41 saves between the
pipes, the most for a Falcon since Ray Jean stopped 42 shots
against Princeton on Oct. 27, 2006 ... Four Falcons made their
collegiate debuts on Tuesday with redshirt freshman D Justin
Kemmerer and freshmen F Dustin Cloutier, D Brandon Graffunder and F
Erik Peterson suiting up in the season opener ... Bentley has a
busy week of non-conference games ahead, visiting Quinnipiac on
Tuesday before travelling to Western Michigan for games on Friday
and Saturday ... The Falcons are 18-27-2 in the all-time series
with the Bobcats and have lost the last five meetings ... Bentley
has never faced Western Michigan ... The Broncos are only the
second CCHA team Bentley has ever faced after dropping a pair of
games at Nebraska-Omaha last season.
Canisius: The Griffs opened their 28th season of play and
its 10th season of Division I hockey by playing two games at No. 17
St. Cloud State. Canisius lost the first game, 7-0, before tying
the Huskies, 3-3, on Saturday. The Griffs tie against St. Cloud
marked the first time in school history that Canisius has recorded
a point against a nationally-ranked opponent. The Griffs entered
Saturday's contest 0-11-0 all-time against ranked opponents.
Canisius' tie also marks only the second time in school history
that the Griffs recorded a tie or win against a WCHA opponent.
Canisius, who also tied Alaska-Anchorage in 2004, now stands 0-5-2
against WCHA teams since moving to Division I. Canisius rallied
from a 3-0 deficit to tie the Huskies, 3-3, on Saturday. The
Griffs' rally marked only the second time since moving to Division
I that Canisius has rallied from down three goals to record a tie
or win. The Griffs also rallied to tie Holy Cross, 4-4, on November
7, 1998 after being down three goals. Bryce Luker recorded his best
game in a Canisius uniform against St. Cloud State. Luker stopped
43 shots in goal, his highest total since joining the Griffs.
Luker's previous best with the Griffs was 38 saves against Robert
Morris. Luker, who transferred to Canisius from Michigan Tech,
recorded a career-best 47 saves on October 23, 2003, also against
St. Cloud State. Seven Griffs made their collegiate debuts during
the weekend series. Freshman Derek Danowski and Pat Kenney each
posted an assist for their first collegiate points. In addition,
redshirt-sophomore played in his first game since October 28, 2005.
Klusendorf had missed most of the last two seasons due to injury.
In Friday's game, 6,057 fans saw the Griffs battle the Huskies. It
was the highest attended Canisius game since 10,125 fans saw the
Griffs play at North Dakota on December 18, 2004. Canisius hits the
road again this weekend, competing at the Mutual of Omaha Stampede.
The Griffs open the tournament, which is being hosted by
Nebraska-Omaha, against Alabama-Huntsville on Friday and will then
play either the host Mavericks or Manitoba on Saturday.
Connecticut: With the team's only senior expected to miss
some time with an injury, the Huskies will be even more reliant on
their freshman class of 15. The early signs suggest that they will
be ok as three of the team's four goals in their exhibition game
were scored by freshman. Because of the youth, not many career
milestones will be reached this year, however junior Chris Myhro
can set some goal scoring records if he is able to add on to his
career total of 33. He is currently tied for sixth on UConn's
Division I career list, but needs only 14 this year to move up to
second place behind Matt Scherer, who graduated as the all-time
leader with 62. With 23 goals this year, Myhro can crack the top 15
goal scorers all-time for the Huskies. Todd Krygier who played from
1984-88, is UConn's career leader in goals with 99. The Huskies
will be looking to avoid putting themselves into a whole in the AHA
when they dropped four out their first five conference games when
they open against AIC on Friday. This is the first time since
they've entered the AHA that their first game was against a
conference opponent. UConn and AIC have had a good battle
throughout the years in both Divisions I and II. The Huskies 2-1-1
record against the Yellow Jackets last season allowed them to pull
ahead in the all-time series 37-36-7.
Holy Cross: Freshmen Mark Znutas and Joe Brock each scored
their firstcollegiate goals in the Niagara game, while freshman
J.P. Martignetti recorded his first two collegiate assists...Holy
Cross is 0-2 all-time against Providence. The Crusaders have won
two out of their last three games against teams from HockeyEast.
Last season, the Crusaders fell to Northeastern, 7-2, on December
30, while they defeated Merrimack, 2-1, on October 24. Two seasons
ago the Crusaders earned a 3-2 win at UMass-Amherst on October 21,
2005. Holy Cross has an all-time record of 21-75-0 against teams
currently in Hockey East.
Mercyhurst: Mercyhurst is now 1-2 lifetime against Ohio
State and 0-4 against Notre Dame. Four of the six goals allowed in
the two games were power play. Mercyhurst's lone goal was also a
power play. Junior Matt Lundin turned in a 46-save effort in 2-1
loss to Ohio State Friday. Freshman Ryan Zapolski made his
collegiate debut the next day against Notre Dame and was credited
with 33 saves. The Lakers will play their third nationally-ranked
opponent next weekend when they travel to Maine (#12/15) for a pair
of games. The Lakers are 0-2-1 lifetime against the Black Bears but
played Maine to a 1-1 overtime draw a year ago in Portland. Senior
forward Ben Cottreau reached the 100-game plateau in his career
against Notre Dame.
Rochester Institute of Technology: RIT erased a 3-0
first-period deficit on Saturday versus Colgate. Senior forward
Matt Smith had a pair of goals, including a power play goal.

the first period. Fellow freshmen Tyler Mazzei and Mike Janda each
notched their first collegiate points, tallying assists. RIT went

loss at Colgate Friday night. Junior Eric Giosa led the SHU attack
with a goal and an assist. Freshman Reade Wolansky scored his first
collegiate goal in the first period of the game. Sacred Heart has
never beaten Colgate, losing all six meetings. Sacred Heart has not
won their season opener season the 1996-97 season. Sacred Heart
will play its second straight ECAC Hockey opponent when they travel
to RPI Satruday night. The Pioneers have beaten RPI in each of the
last two seasons.
