Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week

Dain Prewitt - Bentley
Junior, Forward, Westminster, Colo.

Prewitt scored twice and added an assist in Friday's 4-0 win over Air Force. Prewitt collected all three of his points in the third period. He opened the period with his assist, while netting his first goal of the season just over one minute later. His second tally of the contest was an empty net goal.

Atlantic Hockey Goaltender of the Week

Louis Menard - R.I.T.
Sophomore, Goaltender, Chicoutimi, QUE

Menard helped RIT to a 4-1 win over #18 Cornell University on Saturday night at Blue Cross Arena. Menard stopped 22 of the 23 shots he faced, allowing just one goal for his first win of the season.

Weekly Honor Roll

Andrew Volkening, Air Force (So. G, Genoa, Ill.) - Led Air Force to a 3-1 win on Saturday by allowing just one goal on 25 shots...Made 11 saves in the third period when the score was 2-1...Allowed just three even-strength goals in the series.

Luke Flicek, Army (Sr, F, Burnsville, Minn.) - In the Black Knights only match of the weekend, Flicek notched a goal and added a pair of assists. He assisted on the first goal of the contest and collected his second assist on the final goal. Flicek opened the scoring in the third period with his tally.

Bryce Hollweg, Army (Fr., F, Traverse City, Mich.) - Hollweg netted a goal and added a pair of assists in the Black Knights, 4-1 Atlantic Hockey win over Connecticut. He opened the scoring with his first goal of the season, while adding his assists in the third frame.

Cody Omilusik, Army (Fr., F, Traverse City, Mich.) - Omilusik scored his first career goal, the game-winning score in a 4-1 Army win at Connecticut to open conference play. Omilusik's goal was short-handed and came midway through the second period and helped the Black Knights to their first win of the season.

Joe Calvi, Bentley (Fr., G, New Lenox, Ill.) - Calvi recorded his first collegiate shutout in his third career start, making 29 saves against Air Force on Friday. For the weekend, Calvi posted a 1.52 goals against average and .943 save percentage, stopping 50 shots in two games.

Erik Peterson, Bentley (Fr., F, Minnetonka, Minn.) - Peterson scored his first collegiate goal in Friday's 4-0 win over Air Force and added two assists on the weekend, including an assist on Friday's game-winner.

Chris Forsman, Canisius (So. D, Powell River, BC) - Forsman led the Griffs with two goals in the team's Atlantic Hockey opener against Sacred Heat. Forsman tied the game twice. He knotted the game at two in the second period and then again at four to send the game into overtime. His last goal came with 7:30 left in regulation.

Andrew Loewen, Canisius (So, G, Winnipeg, MAN) - Loewen anchored the Griffs defense during the weekend, posting a goals against average of 3.34. In Canisus' tie against Sacred Heart, Loewen recorded 34 saves while yielding one two goals. He also stopped 24 shot in the team's opener on Friday.

Vincent Scarsella, Canisius (Fr, F, Lackawanna, N.Y.) - Scarsella continued his hot streak during his rookie campaign. In his first week of Atlantic Hockey play, Scarsella posted two goals (1g, 1a) and +/- of +1. He scored the team's first goal of league play on Friday. In the team's second game, Scarsella made a great play to find an open teammate as the Griffs' earned it first point in Atlantic Hockey play.

Dale Reinhardt, Holy Cross (Sr, F, Livingston, N.J.) - Reinhardt recorded one goal and two assists for three points in the weekend series at Mercyhurst. In the 4-1 win on Friday night he scored a goal and dished out an assist, while in the 2-2 tie on Saturday night he assisted on Holy Cross' second goal of the game. Reinhardt is tied for second on the team in points with two goals and two assists for four points.

Ryan Zapolski, Mercyhurst (Fr, G, Erie, Pa.) - Zapolski turned aside 58 of 64 (.906) Holy Cross shots in a 0-1-1 weekend. Four of the six goals allowed came on the power play. He has started the last five games (0-4-1).

Simon Lambert, R.I.T. (Sr, F, Ste. Therese, QUE) - Lambert earned the first star on Saturday, leading the Tigers to their first win of the season. Lambert had a goal and two assists as RIT defeated #18 Cornell University on Saturday night in front of 5,142 fans at Blue Cross Arena. Lambert's goal put the game away in the third period after Cornell had scored, cutting the lead to 2-1. He assisted the RIT's two goals in the first period. Lambert leads the team with six points on a goal and five assists.

Sean Murphy, R.I.T. (Fr, F, Owatoona, Minn.) - Murphy helped RIT to a 4-1 win over #18 Cornell University on Saturday night. The freshman forward's goal in the first period proved to be the game-winner. He scored while RIT was on a five-minute power play in the first period, tallying his second goal of the season.

Alexandre Parent, Sacred Heart (Sr, F, Boisbriand, QUE) - Parent scored the game tying goal Saturday night to help SHU salvage a draw and three points from Canisius. In the weekend series, the senior captain had three points, two goals and two assists. He also had a goal and an assist in Friday's win.

Team Notes


Air Force: AFA earns split at Bentley for the second straight year...The Falcons have allowed one goal in three of the four regular season games...AFA opens the season with a 3-1 record for the first time since the 2000-01 season...The 3-1 start ties as the best in the 11 years under Serratore (2000-01 and 1998-99)...Eric Ehn and Michael Mayra each had two assists in the series...Ehn has four assists in four games...Three different Falcons scored goals for AFA on the weekend...Mike Phillipich scored his third, Jeff Hajner scored his second and Brett Nylander scored his first of the season...Freshman Derrick Burnett earned his second assist of the season...Serratore needs three wins to become the all-time winningest coach in AFA history. He has a 152-190-24 record in his 11th season at AFA. Chuck Delich (1986-97) and John Matchefts (1975-85) holds the school record for wins with 154...AFA has allowed just seven goals in four games this season. The Falcons have allowed just five even-strength. The Falcon penalty kill is operating at an 89.5 clip...AFA hosts Mercyhurst Nov. 2-3...The Falcons and Lakers have played four times in history with each team winning twice...All four meetings came last season as each team swept on the road.

American International: AIC gets back to action this week as the Yellow Jackets will travel to Hamden, Conn. to take on former Atlantic Hockey foe, Quinnipiac in a non-conference match. AIC will then open up its Atlantic Hockey schedule on Friday and Saturday with a home-and-home series versus Bentley.

Army: The Black Knights offense broke through in their only game of the week, a 4-1 win at Connecticut to open league play. The line of Bryce Hollweg, Luke Flicek and Owen Meyer each scored a goal and accounted for eight points. Freshman Cody Omilusik scored his first career goal, a short-handed tally that turned out to be the game-winner. It was Army's first short-handed goal of the season ... Senior Aaron Anderson made his first appearance of the season for the Black Knights, as did freshman Drew Pierson ... Army head coach Brian Riley has played five freshman through four games, Pierson, Cody Omilusik, Joey Ammon, Pat Copeland and Jay Clark ... Omilusik's short-handed goal was Army's first since Bryce Hollweg did it in March 10 of last year against Bentley ... Army has had 76 shots on goal in its last two games ... The Black Knights continue conference play, Saturday and Sunday at Holy Cross. Both games are set for 4 p.m. in Worcester, Mass. Sunday's game will be televised on ESPNU.

Bentley: Bentley earned a split with defending conference tournament champions, Air Force, this weekend in the Battle of the Falcons, the third straight series that the two squads have split ... Freshman goaltender Joe Calvi earned his first collegiate shutout in his third career start on Friday, stopping all 29 shots he faced to help Bentley to a 4-0 win over Air Force ... Freshman linemates Erik Peterson and Dustin Cloutier each recorded their first collegiate goals this weekend with Peterson scoring in the third period on Friday and Cloutier netting his in the first period on Saturday ... Junior Dain Prewitt recorded Bentley's first three-point game of the season with a pair of goals and an assist on Friday ... Bentley has a home-and-home series with American International this weekend, playing on Friday in Watertown and Saturday in West Springfield ... Last season, the Falcons and Yellow Jackets each won both meetings on home ice ... AIC has never won at Bentley since the programs have played at the Division I level.

Canisius: Canisius opened Atlantic Hockey play against Sacred Heart, recording one point in four games against the Pioneers. The Griffs lost the first game, 5-4, in overtime and tied, 2-2, in the series finale. Canisius' point at the Milford Ice Pavilion was the first for the Griffs since winning 5-4 in overtime on January 17, 2004. The Griffs have been accustomed to close games this season. Canisius' two-consecutive overtime games were the first time that the Griffs have played an extra session in two-straight game since November 4 and 5 during the 2005-06 season. Canisius also played an overtime contest in the team's second game, marking the first time since the2003-04 season that three of four Griffs' games went into overtime. The Griffs' fourth game in the run was decided by a goal with 3.5 seconds remaining. The youth of the Griffs continue to shine early in the season. Freshmen Derek Danowski and Vincent Scarsella have contributed to the offense throughout the 2007-08 campaign, both recording two points on one goal and one assist during the weekend. Scarsella leads the team and ranks 10th in the nation among rookies with five total points and 1.00 point per game. Danowski is tied for second on the team with four points and has recorded one point in each of the Griffs' last four games. In Canisius' tie against Sacred Heart, Danowski recorded his first collegiate goal with Scarsella recording the assist. The freshmen and sophomore class have combined to score 11 of Canisius' 12 goals this season. Along with Scarsella and Danowski, sophomore Carl Hudson has helped lead the Griffs' offense. He ranks ninth in the country with two power-play goals and ninth among defensemen with 1.00 point per game. The Griffs continue Atlantic Hockey play this weekend with a home-and-home series against RIT. Canisius will play in Rochester on Friday before returning to Buffalo to host the Tigers on Saturday in its home-opener.

Connecticut: UConn is now winless in their last seven meetings with Army (0-5-2)...Beau Erickson has been consistent in all three games, making 33,33 and 32 saves respectively...The Huskies will be looking to continue their recent success against Sacred Heart. The team is 9-3 against the Pioneers in the last three seasons...After not scoring until his 10th career game against Yale as a freshman last season, Michael Coppola has started this year with two goals in his first three games.

Holy Cross: With the 4-1 win at Mercyhurst on Friday night, the Crusaders are now 5-0 all-time in Atlantic Hockey season-openers....Freshman goalie Adam Roy stopped 44 of 45 shots on Friday night to earn his first collegiate win...Holy Cross' 33.3 power play percentage is ranked third in the country...The Crusaders' 3.50 goals per game are tied for eighth in the nation...Sophomore Ryan Driscoll's three power play goals are tied for third nationally.

Mercyhurst: Mercyhurst is now 16-9-4 against the Crusaders. Junior forward Brett Robinson became the 5th Laker to score a goal this season when he tallied shorthanded handed in Saturday's third period against the Crusaders. Mercyhurst has scored just seven times in six games. Five of the goals (4pp, 1sh) have come on special teams. Senior Ben Cottreau's power play goal later in the period produced the 2-2 tie. Freshman netminder Ryan Zapolski stopped a combined 58 of 64 Holy Cross shots (.906) in the two games. Four of the goals allowed came on the power play. The Lakers play six straight games away from home beginning at Air Force next weekend. The teams split four games last season with each winning twice on the road.

Rochester Institute of Technology: RIT posted their first win of the season on Saturday night versus #18 Cornell University in front of 5,142 fans at Blue Cross Arena in downtown Rochester. The win was the second win versus a ranked opponent since joining the Division I ranks in 2005-06. The Tigers scored two power play goals in the first period en route to a 4-1 win over the Big Red. Senior captain Simon Lambert led RIT with a goal and two assists. Freshman forward Tyler Mazzei (Kelowna, BC) scored his first career goal late in the third period. Sophomore defensemen Dan Ringwald (Oakville, ON) had two assists. Matt Smith (Toronto, ON) scored the game's first goal. RIT played exceptionally well on special teams, going 2-for-4 on the power play and stopping Cornell on all seven of their power play attempts. The Tigers out shot the Big Red 27-23. Louis Menard stopped 22 of 23 shots he faced.

Sacred Heart: The Pioneers took three of four points from Canisius in their home opening weekend. Junior Nick Johnson scored the game winning goal in overtime Friday night and senior Alex Parent scored the game tying goal Saturday night. SHU was trailing after two periods in both games and came back in the third period, scoring two goals Friday and one on Saturday. Freshman Olivier St. Onge made 24 saves in his collegiate debut Saturday night to earn a draw. Sacred Heart has now played three straight overtime games for the first time since February 20-24, 2004. SHU went 1-1-1 in that stretch and has the same record in the current run of extra sessions. Sacred Heart is now unbeaten in 11 of their last 13 meetings against Canisius. The Pioneers will face UConn in a home-and-home series this weekend. The teams meet Friday night in Milford with the rematch Saturday in Storrs. Coverage of Friday's game can be heard on WICC 600 AM.
