Jason Weeks - Canisius

Junior, Forward, Seattle, Wash.

Weeks tallied five points, four goals and an assist in a weekend series versus Sacred Heart, leading the Griffs to a three-point weekend. The junior scored the first of two extra-attacker goals for Canisius in Friday’s victory, helping the team to rally for a 3-3 draw. In the finale, Weeks notched his second career hat trick and the sixth in the program’s Division I history to lead Canisius to a 5-1 win. Weeks, who was on the ice for all five Canisius goals, also added an assist to match his career high with four points. He tallied an even-strength goal, a power play goal and a short-handed goal to complete his hat trick, becoming the first Canisius player to accomplish the feat in a single game. Weeks ranks 21st nationally with 1.12 points per game and 17th with 0.79 assists per game

Joe Calvi - Bentley

Sophomore, Goaltender, New Lenox, Ill.

Calvi posted his second shutout of the season in Bentley’s 6-0 win over Army on Friday night. He made 32 saves, his second highest total of the season and helped force the Black Knights into an 0-7 night on the power play. He improved his record to 6-6-0 on the season.

Kyle Rank - Bentley

Freshman, Goaltender, Islip, N.Y.

Rank put a cap on a tremendous month by making 24 saves in Bentley’s 4-1 win over Army on Saturday night. He also assisted on Dain Prewitt’s goal in the third period. Rank has now won five games in a row and finishes January with a 5-1 record, a 2.51 GAA and a .916 saves percentage.

Atlantic Hockey Honor Roll

Anthony Canzoneri - Bentley (Sr., F, Homer Glen, Ill.) - Canzoneri had four points (three goals and one assist) as Bentley swept Army over the weekend. He finished the series +5. He scored two goals and had one assist in Friday’s 6-0 win, including a goal 21 seconds into the contest. He added a goal in Saturday’s game and has 15 points in his last seven games.

Adam Brace - Canisius (Fr., F, Cobden, ONT) - Brace recorded two assists in the final two minutes of the opener versus Sacred Heart, helping the Griffs rally for a 3-3 draw. Both helpers came with the extra attacker on the ice.

Dan Morrison - Canisius (Fr., G, London, ONT) - Morrison posted a goals against average of 1.94 and a save percentage of .918 in a 1-0-1 week for the Griffs. The rookie stopped 21 shots in the opener, including two shots in overtime. He followed with a 24-save performance in a 5-1 victory for the Griffs.

Corey Jendras - Connecticut (Fr., F, Abingdon, Md.) - Jendras had two points this week (1 goal, 1 assist) in the games against AIC and Holy Cross. Jendras first recorded an assist on Chris Ochoa’s power play goal on Tuesday before scoring UConn’s third goal of the game in game one against Holy Cross. The goal was Jendras’ first of the season but he added to his assist total which now stands at three.

Chris Ochoa - Connecticut (Jr., F, Santa Monica, Calif.) - In the three games this week, Ochoa recorded two goals for the Huskies. He extended the UConn lead at AIC to two-goals scoring a power play goal at the end of the second period to seal the victory for the Huskies. He continued on his scoring streak recording the first goal of the game for UConn in their first meeting with Holy Cross just 1:54 into the first. The goal against Holy Cross was his 10th of the season to put him in a tie for first place among the Huskies in goals scored.

Jordan Cyr - Holy Cross (So., F, Winnipeg, MAN) - Cyr scored three goals and had one assist for four points in Holy Cross’ two-game sweep of UConn. In the 5-3 win on Jan. 30, he recorded one goal and one assist, while in the 4-1 victory on Jan. 31, he scored two goals including the game-winner. Cyr leads the team in goals with 14 and points with 22, while he is tied for fourth on the team in assists with eight. He also leads the team in game-winning goals with three. During Holy Cross’ nine-game unbeaten streak, Cyr has six goals and three assists for nine points.

Ian Dams - Holy Cross (Jr., G, Manotick, ONT) - Dams stopped 26 of 27 shots for a .963 save percentage in the 4-1 win at UConn on Jan. 31. He is now 4-1-1 on the year as he is 4-0-1 in his last five starts.

Jay Silvia - Holy Cross (Fr., F, Burlington, Mass.) - Silvia scored the game-winning goal in the third period to give Holy Cross a 4-3 lead in the 5-3 win at UConn on Jan. 30. The goal was his sixth of the year and his second game-winner. Silvia has six goals and six assists for 12 points. He is tied for fifth on the team in goals.

Phil Ginand - Mercyhurst (Fr., F, Milford, Mass.) - Ginand recorded two assists in the Lakers’ 4-4 OT tie Friday night against No. 19 Air Force. His first helped the Lakers pull within one at 3-2 midway through the second period, while his second gave the team the lead at 4-3 less than eight minutes later. Ginand now has seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points.

Neil Graham - Mercyhurst (Jr., F, Calgary, ALB) - Graham’s three point performance against No. 19 Air Force this past weekend helped the Lakers extend their unbeaten streak to six-games (5-0-1) and improve to 12-12-3 overall and 10-6-3 in conference play. He scored two goals in Friday’s 4-4 OT tie and added the primary assist on sophomore Nick Vandenbeld’s goal in Saturday’s 3-2 OT victory. He now has four goals and five assists for nine points on the season.

Ryan Zapolski - Mercyhurst (So., G, Erie, Pa.) - Zapolski picked up both decisions this past weekend as the Lakers tied and defeated No. 19 Air Force at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. He stopped a combined 83 shots, including 43 in a 3-2 OT victory, and helped the Lakers’ penalty kill hold the Falcons scoreless through 10 power-play opportunities. Zapolski is now 10-2-3 on the season, with a .938 save percentage and a 2.12 goals against average.

Matt Gingera - Sacred Heart (Fr., F, Winnipeg, MAN) - Gingera scored the Pioneers second goal Friday night against Canisius. The tally came midway through the second period as Gingera batted the puck out of mid-air into the net. Gingera is fifth on the Pioneers in scoring with 15 points and has scored eight goals, second most on the team.

Eric Giosa - Sacred Heart (Sr., F, Northville, Mich.) - Giosa tallied a goal and an assist Friday night at Canisius. The senior scored SHU’s third goal on an impressive individual play midway through the second period. Giosa also made a pretty pass through the slot to earn the primary assist on the Pioneers first goal. Giosa has a team leading 10 goals on the year.

Bear Trapp - Sacred Heart (Sr., F, Regina, SASK) - Trapp factored in on all three Sacred Heart goals against Canisius Friday night, picking up three assists. He had the secondary assist on SHU’s first goal and the primary helpers on the Pioneers’ second and third goals. Trapp, who has a team leading 13 assists, has 90 career helpers, one shy of the school record.

Atlantic Hockey Team Notes

Air Force: After starting the season 13-0, Air Force is now 4-7-2 in the last 13...The last three times Air Force and Mercyhurst have played, the game has gone into overtime...Each team has won one and one has ended in a tie...The teams have played 11 times with each team winning five and one ending in tie...Josh Frider and Jacques Lamoureux each had three points (1-2-3) in the series...Air Force’s tie on Friday was the team’s second of the season as the Falcons moved to within one point of first place RIT...AFA’s power play drought continues. The Falcons’ last power play goal came Jan. 16 vs. Canisius. AFA is 0-26 on the power play in the last five games...AFA had 89 shots in the series, 44 on Friday and 45 on Saturday. The Falcons have had 40 or more shots in five of the last six games...AFA is now 7-4-2 on the road this season, the best road record in Atlantic Hockey...Jacques Lamoureux scored his 20th goal of the season on Friday to become the first Falcon with 20 goals since the 2006-07 season when Eric Ehn had 24 and Andrew Ramsey had 23...Lamoureux leads the nation with 0.77 goals per game (20 goals in 26 games)...Brent Olson had an assist on Friday and a goal on Saturday. He is 20th in the nation in points with 30 points in 26 games (1.17) and is third in the nation in assists with 0.92 (24 in 26 games)...Matt Fairchild’s five-game point streak ended on Saturday. It was the longest of his career...AFA hosts UConn on Feb. 6-7, the third and fourth meetings of the season. In December in Storrs, AFA and UConn tied 2-2 and then Air Force won a 4-3 come-from-behind contest...AFA is one of just four teams in the nation to be averaging a sellout. The Falcons are averaging 2,520 fans per game in the 2,502 capacity Cadet Ice Arena. The other three schools are North Dakota, Minnesota and St. Cloud State.

American International: In their only game of the week, the Yellow Jackets lost 3-1 to Connecticut on Tuesday. With the loss AIC’s record fell to 4-20-1 this season and to 4-15-0 in Atlantic Hockey play. After the Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the first period, junior Chris Campanale tied the score as he found the back of the net with an assist from freshman Michael Penny. UConn added two more goals in the second period to cap off their victory. Sophomore Dan Ramirez stopped 17 shots on the evening. Next up, the Yellow Jackets travel to Erie, Pa. for a weekend series match-up with the Mercyhurst Lakers starting on Friday at 7:05 p.m.

Army: The Black Knights, playing short-handed, lost a pair of games to Bentley … The Falcons won the opener 6-0 and earned the sweep with the 4-1 victory on Saturday … Army dressed just 14 skaters on Friday and 15 on Saturday. Ten players are serving suspensions for a violation of team rules. The suspensions range from one game to the season … Army sold-out Friday’s game, the first of the season at Tate Rink … The Black Knights wore their alternate gold jerseys on Friday … Andrew Maxwell and Bret Larson made their collegiate debuts this weekend. The two played on the third line on Friday at the wings. Larson moved to defense on Saturday … Owen Meyer scored his team-leading 14th goal of the season on Saturday. It came on the power play with assists from Zach McKelvie and Will Ryan. Meyer now has 93 points in his 91-game career with 48 goals and 45 assists. He is on track to become Army’s 54th player with at least 100 points … Army will continue its home stand with a two-game series against Canisius. Games on Friday and Saturday are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Tate Rink.

Bentley: Bentley swept Army over the weekend by scores of 6-0 on Friday night and 4-1 on Saturday night. With the two wins, the Falcons have now won three games in a row and seven of nine. They finished the month 6-2 on the road, both losses came in overtime, and they haven’t lost a game in regulation since Jan. 3. On Friday Bentley scored two goals in the game’s first 42 seconds on two of its first three shots. Senior Anthony Canzoneri scored 21 seconds in and junior Marc Menzione scored 21 seconds later. Kane Osmars tallied his first goal of the season in the second period, and Menzione and Canzoneri each scored once more for two goal nights. Sophomore Joe Calvi made 32 saves for his second shutout of the season and fourth of his career. On Saturday it was a team effort as freshman Kyle Rank was superb again in net and third period goals from sophomore Erik Peterson and senior Dain Prewitt was the difference. With the score tied at one entering the third period, Peterson scored on a 5-on-3 1:44 into the period, then Prewitt scored his team leading 13th goal just over three minutes later. Rank’s performance put a cap on an outstanding month where he’s won five games in a row, and he finishes January with a 5-1 record, a 2.51 GAA and a .916 saves percentage. Four of his wins came on the road. Canzoneri has 15 points in his last seven games (six goals, nine assists). His empty net goal in Saturday’s game was the 100th point of his career, making him the 14th Bentley player ever to reach that milestone. Senior Jeff Gumaer moved into fifth place on the school’s all-time goals list with his goal on Friday, the 57th of his career. Defenseman Bobby Preece has nine assists in his last six games. With 11 Atlantic Hockey wins, Bentley has already equaled its most ever wins in Atlantic Hockey with eight games to play. The Falcons begin a home-and-home series with Holy Cross on Friday with the first game in Worcester. The two teams spilt a home-and-home in December with each team winning at home.

Canisius: Canisius took 3-of-4 points in a weekend series versus Sacred Heart, fighting to a draw on Friday, 3-3, and winning on Saturday, 5-1. Canisius improved to 10-10-5 on the season and 8-8-3 in Atlantic Hockey play. Junior Jason Weeks led the Griffs during the weekend, tallying five points, four goals and one assist during the two games. He scored the first of two extra-attacker goals in the opener, helping the Griffs rally for a 3-3 draw. In the finale, Weeks recorded his second career hat trick and added an assist to match his career high. The hat trick was the sixth in the program’s history. Weeks’ first goal of the evening was a short-handed score, the sixth of his career to stretch the program’s Division I record. He then tallied an even-strength goal 2:03 later. It was the first 5-on-5 goal for Weeks this season. Previously, Weeks had recorded three power play goals, two short-handed goals and two extra-attacker goals. He then capped the night with his fourth power play goal of the season. Weeks is the first Griffs to tally an even-strength, power play and short-handed goal in the same game. He ranks 21st nationally with 1.12 points per game and 17th with 0.79 assists per game. Junior Carl Hudson tallied the Griffs’ other two goals in Friday’s 3-3 draw. Hudson now has nine goals on the season, the most of any blueliner in Atlantic Hockey. He also ranks third nationally among defenders with 0.38 goals per contest. Hudson’s first goal against Sacred Heart was on the power play, the 17th of his career. He moved into a tie for second in the program’s Division I record book, tying David Deeves. Hudson has recorded 17 of his 25 career goals on the power play (68 percent). Sophomores Cory Conacher (1g, 2a) and Vincent Scarsella (3a) also matched career highs with three points in Saturday’s victory. The three assists for Scarsella was also a new personal best. The win on Saturday ended the Griffs seven-game winless streak at home. Canisius also extended its streak of scoring two or more goals to 21 games, the longest active streak in the nation. The Griffs have three games this week. Canisius will travel to Erie, Pa. on Tuesday to face Mercyhurst in a make-up game originally scheduled for Dec. 19. The Griffs will then play at Army on Friday and Saturday.

Connecticut: The Huskies participated in three games this week finishing the week with a 1-2 record and rounding out the month of January 2-8. The Huskies had a decisive 3-1 victory over AIC thanks in part to sophomores Justin Hernandez (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and Andrew Olson (Alexandria, Minn.) who each had a goal and an assist on the day to give UConn the victory. Olson recorded the game winning goal, and his 10th of the season, at 14:08 in the second period and junior Chris Ochoa (Santa Monica, Calif.) added an insurance power-play goal with just seconds remaining in the second to seal the victory. UConn continued their play on Friday and Saturday returning home for the first time in three games for a weekend series with Holy Cross. UConn jetted out to a 3-0 lead on Friday over the Crusaders, but were unable to maintain it and allowed five-unanswered goals to give up the victory in the third period. In game two of the weekend series, Holy Cross continued on their goal-scoring spree recording another four goals to extend their streak to nine straight unanswered goals against UConn before the Huskies got on the board with 1:11 remaining in the game to avoid the shut out. UConn has not been shut out at home all year. Michael Coppola recorded the lone Husky goal of the game on Saturday. The Huskies are back in action next weekend at Air Force.

Holy Cross: Holy Cross’ nine-game unbeaten streak (5-0-4) ties the second longest in school history as the Crusaders went 9-0-0 between Jan. 16, 1999-Feb. 13, 1999. The longest in school history is 10 games (10-0-0) between Dec. 8, 1979-Jan. 16, 1980. This streak is currently the second longest in the nation behind fellow Atlantic Hockey team RIT’s 11-game streak (11-0-0). During this streak Holy Cross has outscored its opponents by a 34-20 margin. The Crusaders are averaging 3.8 goals scored per game and have only allowed 2.2 goals per contest during the streak. This current streak started with a 2-2 tie at No. 5 Denver at the Denver Cup. The Crusaders then won three in a row with a 4-3 win over Rensselaer at the Denver Cup, and two 5-1 victories over league opponent American International. Holy Cross then tied three games in a row with two at Army, 3-3 and 4-4, and a 2-2 tie with No. 18 Dartmouth. The Crusaders are now also on a two-game winning streak with the 5-3 and 4-1 wins over Connecticut. Holy Cross went undefeated for the month with a 5-0-4 record. After trailing 3-0 on Jan. 30, Holy Cross went on to score nine unanswered goals in the two-game series before UConn added a late goal in the Crusaders 4-1 win on Jan. 31. This recent success during the nine-game unbeaten streak has been a team effort as 14 different players have scored at least one goal over these nine games and 18 total players have at least one point. During this nine-game unbeaten streak, sophomore Jordan Cyr (Winnipeg, Manitoba) leads the team in goals with six and points with nine. For the year, he also leads the team in goals with 14 and points with 22. In the last four games, junior co-captain Ryan Driscoll (Dorchester, Mass.) has two goals and four assists for six points. During this nine-game unbeaten streak, sophomore goalie Adam Roy (Feeding Hills, Mass.) is 2-0-3 with a 2.10 goals against average and a .923 save percentage, while junior Ian Dams (Manotick, Ontario) is 3-0-1 with a 2.20 goals against average and a .926 save percentage. The Crusaders return to action on Feb. 6-7 when they will meet Atlantic Hockey opponent Bentley in a 7:00 p.m. home-and-home series. Holy Cross will host the game on Feb. 6, while the contest on Feb. 7 will be in Watertown, Mass., at the John A. Ryan Arena.

Mercyhurst: The Mercyhurst College men’s hockey team improved to 5-0-1 during its nine-game homestand after tying and defeating No. 19 Air Force this past weekend at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. The Lakers, who are now 12-12-3 on the season and 10-6-3 in Atlantic Hockey play, tied the Falcons, 4-4, on Friday night before posting a 3-2 OT victory on Saturday. Junior Neil Graham earned three points on the weekend to lead the offense, while sophomore Ryan Zapolski registered both decisions with 83 combined saves. He also contributed as the Lakers’ held the Falcons scoreless on 10 power-play opportunities. Mercyhurst is now 5-5-1 against Air Force in an all-time series that dates back to the 2007 season. The Lakers will play three games this week, with Canisius coming to town on Tuesday for a make-up game from Dec. 19 followed by a series against American International on Friday, Feb. 6 and Saturday, Feb. 7.

Rochester Institute of Technology: The Tigers return to action this weekend at home against Sacred Heart. On Friday, the Tigers fell to the U.S. Under-18 squad in an exhibition contest, 6-3 before 2,022 fans at Blue Cross Arena. Sophomore goaltender Jan Ropponen made his first collegiate start, stopping 37 shots. Justin Hofstetter, Jesse Newman and Anton Kharin scored for RIT In the exhibition game. RIT has the longest active winning streak in Division I, with 11 victories in a row. It is RIT’s longest winning streak since opening the 2000-01 season with 15 straight wins. The Tigers have outscored their foes 53-27 over their winning streak. The Tigers are now 9-0-0 when leading after two periods, 9-1-0 in the second game of a weekend series and 11-0-0 when scoring at least five goals in a game this season. RIT has sole possession of first place in Atlantic Hockey with 31 points, one point ahead of Air Force. RIT is tied for the lead in Division I with eight shorthanded goals. RIT is now up to third in Division I in scoring, averaging 3.73 goals per game (the three top scoring teams are from Atlantic Hockey). The Tigers have incredibly balanced scoring, with six players scoring between 22 and 24 points and 12 in double digits. Senior forward Brennan Sarazin has 11 points (5-6-11) in his last six games. Nine of his 11 points during the streak have come in the third period. Dan Ringwald is tied for fourth among all Division I defensemen with 21 assists and ninth with 23 points. Sophomore Andrew Favot has 16 points (3-13-16) during an 11-game point scoring streak, which ties a RIT DI record, set by Simon Lambert last season. He has an assist in 10 straight games, a school record. Junior forward Matt Crowell scored 10 goals in eight January games. Senior goaltender Louis Menard is 31-7-6 all-time in AHA regular season play. RIT players are a combined plus-120 in AHA play. RIT has 13 power-play goals in eight games in 2009.

Sacred Heart: The Pioneers picked up one point from Canisius, tying the Griffs, 3-3 Friday night before losing Saturday 5-1. Senior Eric Giosa had a goal an assist Friday night to increase his team leading totals to 18 points and 10 goals on the year. Senior Bear Trapp had three assists Friday night to increase his career total to 90, one shy of the school record. Trapp now has 141 career points and needs one more point to move into second all-time. Junior Mike Rosata scored his first collegiate goal in Saturday’s loss. Sacred Heart returns to upstate New York for a series at RIT this weekend.
