Atlantic Hockey Weekly Award Winners for Games Through October 26

Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week

 

Andrew Olson - Connecticut
Sophomore, Forward, Alexandria, Minn.


Andrew recorded four goals and two assists against Army in their 4-3 and 6-3 wins over the 2007 Atlantic Hockey Champions. Olson scored one goal and dished out two assists in the close 4-3 win Friday night and recorded a hattrick against the Black Knights on Saturday, the first of his career. Olson's lone goal on Friday night ended up being the winning goal for the Huskies. His second Saturday night goal held the same fate. He leads the team in goals (6) and points (8).

Stefan Drew - Sacred Heart
Senior, Goaltender, Oakbank, MAN


Drew stopped 72 of the 77 shots in two games this weekend. Friday night he made 30 saves in the tie with RIT. Saturday night he was spectacular, making a career high 42 saves in the Pioneers win over the Tigers. Drew has made 163 saves in just five games, an average of 33 saves per game.

Marcello Ranallo - Connecticut Freshman, Forward, Burnaby, BC

On the weekend against Army, Ranallo recorded the second most points on the team (behind Olson) scoring two goals and tacking on three assists as he recorded the first two multi-point games of his career. His two goals scored occurred on only six shots taken for a .333 shot percentage, second on the team on the weekend. He scored the game tying goal early on against Army during the Friday night game and added a helper on Olson's game winning goal later into the game.

Atlantic Hockey Honor Roll

Greg Burgdoerfer, Air Force (Fr., F, Setauket, N.Y.) - 1-0-1 in two games vs. AIC...Scored his second goal of the season on Friday...His goal gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead as Air Force never trailed in the game...Has two goals on the season.

Brent Olson, Air Force (Sr., F, Baudette, Minn.) - Two goals and three assists for five points in sweep at AIC...+4 in the series tied as the best mark of any Falcon in the two games...Tied his career-high with two goals in Friday’s 5-2 win...Scored the game-winner early in the third period and then sealed the victory with a short-handed empty net goal. His shortie was his first of the season...Career-high three assists in Saturday’s 3-1 win...Had a hand in all three goals and assisted on Jacques Lamoureux’s game-winner...Tied for the team lead, and the for the national lead, with 14 points in six games this season...Leads the nation with 12 assists in six games.

Andrew Volkening, Air Force (Jr., G, Genoa, Ill.) - Played every minute in the series sweep of AIC last weekend...1.50 GAA and a .927 saves percentage...Stopped 38 of the 41 shots he faced...Nearly had his second shutout of the season, but AIC scored with 28 seconds left on Saturday in the 3-1 victory...Allowed three goals on the weekend, just one even-strength.

Nielsson Arcibal, American International (Fr., F, Vista, Calif.) - Recorded the first goal and assist of his collegiate career against Air Force Friday night. He registered an assist for the first point of his collegiate career on AC’s first goal and later tied the game at 2-2 in the second period with a power play goal.

Michael Penny, American International (Fr., F, Calgary, ALB) - Recorded the first goal and assist of his collegiate career against Air Force Friday night. He recorded his first career point when he scored with five seconds left in the first period and later assisted on a goal to tie the game at 2-2 in the second period.

Carl Hudson, Canisius (Jr., F, Smooth Rock Falls, ONT) - Hudson scored the Griffs’ lone goal in a 1-1 draw against Hockey East foe Merrimack. Hudson scored the game-tying goal in the third period with a power-play score.

Andrew Loewen, Canisius (Jr., G, Winnipeg, MAN) - Loewen recorded 29 saves in a 1-1 draw against Hockey East opponent Merrimack. The junior stopped the last 27 shots he faced, including 14 in the third period, to help the Griffs earn their second-ever point against a team from Hockey East.

Brad McInnis, Connecticut (So., G, Anchorage, Alaska) - Brad found out just minutes before the Saturday night game (10/25) that he would be getting the start after Beau Erickson was not able to go. McInnis recorded 34 saves against an Army squad that took 37 shots on goal and 80 shots attempted on the night. The win was the first in McInnis’ career as he has only made three prior starts playing in just seven games.

Ryan Driscoll, Holy Cross (Jr., F, Dorchester, Mass.) - Driscoll scored two power play goals in the game against Providence. The goals were his first two of the year as he is tied for second on the team in goals and leads the team in power play goals. His 0.67 power play goals per game are tied for fourth nationally.

Cameron Burt, R.I.T. (Fr., F, Detroit, Mich.) - Burt tallied a pair of goals over the weekend for the Tigers. His first goal came on Friday night and helped RIT erase a two-goal deficit and earn a point at Sacred Heart. It was also his first career goal at RIT. His second goal came on Saturday night and tied the game at 2-2 early in the third period. Burt is now tied for second on the team in goals with two so far this young season.

Louis Menard, R.I.T. (Jr., G, Chicoutimi, QUE) - Menard helped RIT skate to a 3-3 tie with Sacred Heart on Friday night. He was outstanding in net, making 30 saves. Three of his 30 saves came in the third period, two coming on two-on-one breaks. Those saves helped RIT erase a two-goal deficit and earn the point. He also added two assists. He’s the first goalie at RIT to tally two assists since the team joined Division I.

Eric Giosa, Sacred Heart (Sr., F, Northville, Mich.) - Giosa scored three goals in SHU’s two game series against RIT. He had two of the Pioneers three tallies Friday night as the Pioneers skated to a draw with the Tigers. Saturday he scored the fourth goal for SHU midway through the third period. The three goals give Giosa the team lead in that category.

Atlantic Hockey Team Notes

Air Force: Jacques Lamoureux had two goals and four points on the weekend...Lamoureux is tied with his linemate, Brent Olson, for the most points in the nation with 14 in six games...Lamoureux’s seven goals are the most in the nation...Lamoureux has a point in all six games this season, the longest active streak on the team...Of Air Force’s 28 goals this season, 16 have come from the Frider, Lamoureux, Olson line...Air Force is 6-0 for the first time since the 1971-72 team opened the season 8-0...The 6-0 start is the best ever against all Division I teams...Sophomore defenseman Kevin Wright scored his first point of the season, an assist on Friday...AFA is now 17-0-1 all-time vs. AIC...AFA now has two road sweeps on the season to tie the school record...AFA also had two road sweept last season...Since the beginning of the 2006-07 season, Air Force has won 46 games, 24 on the road and 22 at home...AFA tied the school record with 10 road wins last season. The Falcons already have four this season...AFA hosts Bentley next weekend at Cadet Ice Arena followed by a bye week...AFA holds a 12-5-2 lead in the series vs. Bentley...AFA has won three straight vs. Bentley and was 4-1-1 vs. Bentley last season which included two wins in the AHA quarterfinals...AFA is 6-2-1 vs. Bentley at the Cadet Ice Arena. The last Bentley win was a 6-5 victory in 2006.

Army: The Black Knights fell to 0-3-0, 0-2-0 after being swept at Connecticut … Army has outshot all three of its opponents and holds a 123-75 advantage in shots on goal … Sophomore Cody Omilusik has emerged as the team’s leading scorer with a pair of multiple point games over the weekend. Omilusik has two goals and two assists while junior Owen Meyer has two goals (one short-handed, one power play) and an assist … Freshmen Mike Hull and Bryant Skarda each had a goal and assist over the weekend, their first collegiate points … Marcel Alvarez, Danny Colvin and Scott Warner all recorded assists, their first collegiate points … Army has converted two of its 17 power play chances while allowing four goals in 14 tries to its opponents … After being whistled for one penalty against Merrimack, Army was penalized 14 times at Connecticut … Army will play a home and home series against Sacred Heart this weekend with Friday’s game at West Point. The game on Halloween will be the second of just three 2008 home games.

Bentley: Bentley was idle this weekend but returns to the ice for a weekend series at Air Force beginning on Oct. 31. In six games against Air Force last year, Bentley went 1-4-1 including two losses in the first round of the Atlantic Hockey Tournament. The one win was a 4-0 shutout on Oct. 26 at Ryan Skating Arena. Goalie Joe Calvi stopped 29 shots for his first career shutout, Dain Prewitt scored two goals and Erik Peterson scored his first collegiate goal. Bentley earned a 4-4 draw with Air Force on Feb. 1 in Colorado Springs. In that game, Peterson scored the game-tying goal with just nine seconds remaining in regulation.

Canisius: Canisius tied its only game of the weekend, earning a draw against Hockey East foe Merrimack, 1-1. The Griffs are now 1-2-2 on the season. With the tie, Canisius earned its second-ever point against a Hockey East opponent. Canisius, who also tied UMass-Lowell on Oct. 25, 2003, is now 0-5-2 all-time against teams from Hockey East. The game against Merrimack was the first time the Griffs hosted a Hockey East team at the Buffalo State Sports Arena. Canisius did host New Hampshire and UMass-Lowell at HSBC Arena in 2003. Junior Carl Hudson scored the lone goal for the Griffs in the draw, connecting with a power-play tally. He now ranks fourth in the Canisius’ Division I record book with 14 career extra-man tallies. Hudson has scored 14 of his career 19 goals on the power play (73.7). Sophomore Cory Conacher and junior Josh Heidinger both tallied assists. Conacher has posted one point in all five games this season, extending his career-long point streak. Heidinger’s assist gave him 66 points for his career, tying him for ninth in the program’s Division I record book with Fred Coccimiglio. In the first period, sophomore Vincent Scarsella was whistled for his first career penalty. He went the first 41 games of his career with being called for a penalty. Last year, Scarsella was the only player in the country with more than 10 points and zero penalty minutes. The Griffs return to the ice on Friday and Saturday, playing at American International in a league matchup.

Connecticut: UConn went 2-0 on the weekend against Army sweeping the Black Knights for the first time ever in a two-game series. The Huskies narrowly defeated Army on Friday night. After taking a 3-1 lead, Army came back scoring two goals late into the third period and bringing the score to 4-3. UConn hung on, even after Army pulled their goalie to take the 4-3 victory and their first win of the season and in Atlantic Hockey. On Saturday night, Army got out to a quick lead, but three unanswered goals gave UConn a 3-1 lead heading into the second period. Army closed in tying the game up with 9:06 to go in the second period, but sophomore Andrew Olson scored the game winning goal for the Huskies for the second straight night giving them the 4-3 lead. Later on in the third period, Olson would add on another goal and freshman Marcello Ranallo would add icing to the cake with a goal with 7 minutes remaining in the game to defeat the Black Knights 6-3.

Holy Cross: Junior co-captain Ryan Driscoll (Dorchester, Mass.) scored two power play goals against Providence for his first two goals of the year. He is tied for second on the team in goals and leads the team in power play goals. His 0.67 power play goals per game are tied for fourth nationally. Sophomore Everett Sheen (Lethbridge, Alberta) had a goal and two assists for three points versus the Friars. He leads the team in assists with three and in points with five, while he is tied for second in goals with two. His 1.67 points per game are tied for eighth in the nation. Junior Brodie Sheahan (Lethbridge, Alberta) netted his third goal of the year in the Providence game. His three goals lead the team and his 1.00 goals per game are tied for sixth nationally. The Crusaders went 3-8 on the man-advantage against the Friars. Holy Cross’ 23.5 power play percentage is the sixth best in the nation. On Saturday night against Providence, the Crusaders played in front of a standing room only crowd at the Hart Center of 2,032. With the loss to the Friars, Holy Cross is now 3-2-2 in its last seven games against teams from Hockey East.

Mercyhurst: The Mercyhurst College Men’s Hockey team concluded its non-conference slate this past weekend with back-to-back losses to Nebraska-Omaha. The Lakers fell in both games by the scores of 3-1 and 5-2. Senior Ryan Toomey tallied his first goal of the season in game one while sophomores Dan Bremner and Steve Cameron added scores in the second. Mercyhurst is now 0-6 on the season, with all six losses coming on the road. Cameron currently leads the team with three goals and four assists for seven points. Senior Matt Lundin has started in five games this season with a goals against average of 5.83 and a save percentage of .866. The Lakers open up Atlantic Hockey play on Friday, Nov. 7 with a pair of games against Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass.

Rochester Institute of Technology: With the loss on Saturday RIT is now winless in their last four games. Its the first time since the 2005-06 season, RIT’s first in Division I, that they have gone winless in four straight games. RIT’s penalty-killing unit was stout this weekend, holding Sacred Heart to 2 goals in 12 power play chances. The power play unit showed signs of life this weekend, scoring a goal each night and going 2-for-9 on the weekend. The win Saturday by the Pioneers broke a five game unbeaten streak by the Tigers. RIT was 4-0-1 in that stretch, dating back to the 2006-07 season. RIT out-shot Sacred Heart 77-67 on the weekend. This weekend’s games will be televised on Time Warner Sportsnet. Friday’s game will be tape-delayed, while Saturday’s game will be broadcast live beginning at 7 pm.

Sacred Heart: The Pioneers took three out of four points from RIT over the weekend, skating to a 3-3 tie Friday and picking up a 4-2 Saturday. The victory was SHU’s first of the season. Goaltender Stefan Drew was spectacular in goal Saturday night, making a career high 42 saves. Drew is averaging almost 33 saves per game in his five games this season. Senior Eric Giosa scored two goals Friday night to record the first multi-goal game for a SHU player this year. Saturday’s win was the first time Sacred Heart has beaten RIT since the Tigers officially joined Atlantic Hockey, snapping a five game winless streak. Freshmen Matt Gingera and Ryan Miniaci each recorded assists on the weekend, tallying their first career points. The Pioneers were called for just four penalties Saturday, the fewest infractions they have commited since being called for three on January 4, 2008 against Air Force. Senior Bear Trapp had two assists Friday night, giving him 80 for his career and moving him in to a tie for third in school history. Trapp has 126 points which is good for fifth on the all-time list. The Pioneers face Army in a home-and-home this weekend starting Friday in West Point and concluding Saturday in Milford.
