Five points, four goals, in the sweep of Bentley...First career hat trick on Saturday (3-1-4)...+3 on the weekend...Scored the game-winner on Friday, leads the nation with four game winners...Leads the nation with 11 goals and 19 points in eight games...Scored two PPG in the series, leads the nation with seven PPG...Team-best 10 shots in the series...His hat trick is the first since Matt Fairchild had one vs. Denver last season.

 

Josh Heidinger - Canisius
Junior, Forward, Buffalo, N.Y.


Heidinger led the Canisius offense with five points on three goals and two assists to help lead the Griffs to their first weekend sweep since the 2005-06 season. Heidinger tallied an assist in the opener and then had a career-day in the finale. The junior had his hand in all four Canisius goals, posting a hat trick and an assist. His hat trick was the fifth in the program's Division I history.

Louis Menard - R.I.T.
Junior, Goaltender, Chicoutimi, QUE


Menard got RIT off on the right foot Friday versus Holy Cross. He made 29 stops, allowing one goal as the Tigers beat the Crusaders 5-1. Menard held Holy Cross at bat early in the first period, turning aside all six shots he faced. He made 12 saves in the second and 11 in the third while allowing just the one goal. The win was the 30th in his career and 25th Atlantic Hockey victory.

Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week

 

Michael Penny - American International Freshman, Forward, Calgary, ALB

Scored all three of AIC's goals in the weekend series with Canisius. He scored twice in the first game of the series with the Golden Griffins, and scored the Yellow Jackets only goal in the weekend finale.

Atlantic Hockey Honor Roll

Andrew Volkening, Air Force (Jr., G, Genoa, Ill.) - Allowed just three goals and made 51 saves in the series sweep of Bentley...Started both games and had a 1.50 GAA and a .944 saves percentage...Made a season-high 29 saves on Saturday...Ninth in the nation in GAA, 1.49...14th in the nation in saves percentage, .935...In AHA games this season, ranks first in GAA (1.66) and second in sv% (.934).

Paul Weisgarber, Air Force (Fr., F, Fargo, N.D.) - Two goals in the Bentley series, one in each game...AFA’s top freshman goal scorer with three this season...Scored the first goal in Friday’s 5-1 win...Scored the fourth goal on Saturday for a 4-0 lead in the second period.

Jay Clark, Army (So., G, Baudette, Minn.) - Clark made 74 saves over the weekend to help Army earn a win and tie against Sacred Heart. During a 3-3 overtime draw on Saturday, Clark posted a career-best 42 saves, including five in overtime. During Friday’s 6-3, he was credited with 32 saves in earning his second win of his career. This weekend marked the first time Clark has played in back-to-back games.

Owen Meyer, Army (Jr., F, Dundee, Ill.) - Meyer scored three goals and handed out two assists as Army earned its first points of the season with a win and tie against Sacred Heart. Meyer scored twice, including a power play tally, and handed out two assists during a 6-3 win and then scored the next night, in a 3-3 tie. Meyer leads the team with five goals and five assists.

Dave Kostuch, Canisius (Fr., F, Richmond Hill, ONT) - Kostuch posted three points during a weekend sweep of AIC. During the opener, the rookie scored a goal to give Canisius a 2-0 lead in the first period. After the Yellow Jackets equaled the game at two, Kostuch gave the Griffs the lead early in the third period. He made a nice move to slip the puck past AIC’s goalie and teammate Carl Hudson tipped the puck in for the game-winning score. Kostuch then notched his first collegiate game winner in the final, helping the Griffs to their first weekend sweep since the 2005-06 season.

Dan Morrison, Canisius (Fr., G, London, ONT) - Morrison won his first collegiate game, anchoring the Griffs defense to a victory over AIC. The rookie stopped 32 Yellow Jacket shots. Morrison also helped kill all six power plays the Griffs faced, recording 12 saves while a man down.

Mike Daly, Holy Cross (Fr., D, South Burlington, Vt.) - Daly scored on the power play for his first collegiate goal in the second game against RIT. For the season, he also has one assist and two points.

Rob Forshner, Holy Cross (Jr., F, Sundre, ALB) - Forshner had one goal and one assist in the two-game series at RIT. He scored a power play goal on Friday, while he had an assist in the second game. Forshner is tied for the team lead in assists with three and he is tied for second in points with four.

Brodie Sheahan, Holy Cross (Jr., F, Lethbridge, ALB) - Sheahan scored one goal and had one assist in the games at RIT. In the first game he assisted on Holy Cross’ goal, while in the second game he netted a power play goal. Sheahan leads the team in goals with four and is tied for the lead in points with five.

Tyler Brenner, R.I.T. (Fr., F, Linwood, ONT) - Brenner helped RIT to a 5-1 win over Holy Cross on Friday night. The first-year forward had a goal and an assist for the Tigers. He had the second assist on the eventual game-winning goal and he added a power play tally in the second period. He is currently tied for third on the team in scoring with six points on three goals and three assists.

Jesse Newman, R.I.T. (Jr., G, Chicoutimi, QUE) - Newman helped RIT to a pair of wins over Holy Cross this past weekend. The senior forward had four points on a goal and three assists as RIT swept four points from the Crusaders. On Friday Newman dished out two assists in a 5-1 win for RIT. On Saturday he had a goal and an assist in a 5-2 victory for RIT. Both his points on Saturday came short-handed. Newman moved into second on the team in scoring with seven points on four goals and three assists.

Erik Boisvert, Sacred Heart (Jr., F, Drummondville, QUE) - Boisvert had a three point week against Army. Friday night he assisted on SHU’s first goal early in the second period. Saturday night he scored the Pioneers first goal and then assisted on the game tying goal late in the third period. Boisvert now leads the team in scoring with two goals and three assists on the season.

Matt Gingera, Sacred Heart (Fr., F, Winnipeg, MAN) - Gingera extended his point scoring streak to four straight games as he a tallied two assists on the weekend against Army, one in each game. Friday he assisted on the final Sacred Heart goal and Saturday he had the primary assist on the Pioneers first goal of the game. Gingera now has a team-leading four assists for the year.

Atlantic Hockey Team Notes

Air Force: 8-0 start ties as the best in school history. The 1971-72 team was also 8-0...8-0 start is the best ever vs. Division I team...Eight-game winning streak is longest in school history vs. Division I teams...AFA is the only undefeated and untied team in the nation that has played more than one game...The “FLO” line of Frider, Lamoureux and Olson has scored 21 of the team’s 41 goals this season...AFA is now 14-5-2 all-time vs. Bentley. In the last four games vs. Bentley, AFA has outscored BC, 25-6, dating back to the playoffs last season...AFA has four of the top scorers in the nation as Lamoureux leads the nation with 19 points, Olson is second with 17 and Frider is fourth with 12...Scored first in seven of the eight games...Only trailed for 26 minutes all season. All came early in the Sacred Heart game on Oct. 11...Killed 13 straight opponent power plays, all in the Bentley series...Scored a PPG in three straight games. AFA is seven for 23 on the PP in the last three games...Out-scored opponents 25-5 in four home games this season...The top scoring team in the nation with 5.12 goals per game (among teams who have played more than one game)...Defenseman Greg Flynn is third in the nation in scoring by defensemen with 11 points (2-9-11). Flynn has a point in seven of the eight games this season...Lamoureux and Frider have scored in every game this season and have eight-game scoring streaks...Lamoureux has scored a goal in seven of the eight games this season...AFA is off this week with the next series coming at Holy Cross, Nov. 14-15.

Army: The Black Knights earned their first points of the season with a win and tie against Sacred Heart. Army posted a 6-3 home victory on Saturday and settled for a 3-3 tie in Milford, Conn., the next night. Army is now 1-3-1 overall and 1-2-1 in conference competition … Army was outshot for the first two times this season and still managed a win and a tie … Sophomore goalie Jay Clark, playing in back-to-back games for the first time in his career, made 74 saves over the weekend, including a career-best 42 during the tie on Saturday … Owen Meyer totaled three goals and two assists over the weekend, following a two-goal, two-assist performance on Friday … Meyer leads the team in scoring with five goals and three assists … Matt Hickey posted his first career multiple point game with a goal and two assists on Friday and then scored again on Saturday … Kyle Maggard scored his first career goal Saturday at Sacred Heart … Joey Ammon scored his first goal of the season on Friday … Fourteen different players have earned points for the Black Knights … Army will play a home and home with American International this weekend with Friday’s game in Springfield, Mass., and Saturday at Tate Rink. Saturday’s game will be Army’s last home game until Jan. 9, 2009.

Bentley: Bentley suffered two lopsided losses at the hands of Air Force, losing 5-1 on Oct. 31 and 8-2 on Nov. 1 … freshman goalie Kyle Rank started his second straight game on Oct. 31 and stopped 27 shots, he has saved 47 shots in his two starts this season … senior Dain Prewitt scored in the first game on Friday, the native of Westminster, Colo., has now scored five goals in eight career games in his native state … Bentley had six freshman in the lineup on Friday, four of whom were defensemen … freshman defensemen Mike Switzer notched his second assist in as many games on Oct. 31 … freshman forward Aaron Stonacek tallied his first career goal in the second period of Saturday’s game … after four straight games on the road, Bentley opens at home this Friday against Connecticut at Ryan Skating Arena … the Falcons went 3-1 against the Huskies last season and 1-1 at home … UConn won the first game 3-2 in overtime on Nov. 10, but Bentley took the second game at home 6-0 … the following night, Bentley will take on another team of Huskies, Northeastern, at Matthews Arena … it will the first ever meeting between the two programs despite them only being separated by a few miles.

Canisius: The Griffs swept a weekend series from AIC, defeating the Griffs by scores of 3-2 and 4-1. The weekend sweep was the first for Canisius since taking two games from Connecticut on Jan. 27 and 28, 2006. The Griffs also improved to 3-2-1 on the road this season, surpassing its road win total from a year ago. Canisius complied a 2-15-5 record away from home during the 2007-08 season. Juniors Josh Heidinger and Jason Weeks led Canisius during the two victories. Heidinger compiled five points on three goals and two assists. In the finale of the series, the junior scored three goals and added an assist for a career-best four points. His hat trick matched the program’s Division I record for goals in a game and was the fifth time a player scored three goals in a game. Weeks was the last player to accomplish the feat (vs. Army, Jan. 6, 2007), while Chris Duggan (vs. Fairfield, Jan. 15, 1999; vs. Sacred Heart, Feb. 19, 1999) and Brad Kenny (vs. Holy Cross, Jan. 30, 1999) also posted hat tricks. Heidinger moved into sixth place in the program’s Division I record book with 71 career points. He now has totaled 21 goals and 50 assists in two-plus seasons. Against the Yellow Jackets, he became just the sixth player in school history to record 50 career assists since Canisius moved to Division I. Heidinger has posted 11 points on four goals and seven assists this season. His 11 points currently rank seventh in the nation. Weeks also played a big role in the Griffs 4-1 victory over AIC. The junior recorded an assist on each of Canisius’ four scores, matching the school record for assists in a game. His four helpers tied the Division I mark set by Chris Duggan, who also posted four assists against AIC on March 13, 1999. Weeks has recorded nine assists this season, already surpassing his 2007-08 total of eight and ranks second in the country. Freshman Dave Kostuch also tallied two goals during the weekend to go along with an assist. His assist was on the game-winning goal in the opener and the rookie then tallied his first collegiate game winner in the finale. Kostuch currently ranks 23rd in the country among rookies with 0.86 points per game and he is the only freshman in the country with five goals this season. Junior Andrew Loewen and freshman Dan Morrison both posted wins in goal for the Griffs during the weekend. Loewen recorded 22 saves in the opener, while Morrison stopped 32 shots in the finale to earn his first collegiate victory. The Griffs are off the next weekend and resume play on Nov. 11 against Niagara in the annual Battle of the Bridge grudge match.

Holy Cross: The Crusaders will host Mercyhurst in a two-game series on Nov. 7-8. Holy Cross is 1-1-1 so far this season in Worcester. Freshman defenseman Mike Daly (South Burlington, Mass.) scored his first collegiate goal in the second game at RIT. Junior Brodie Sheahan (Lethbridge, Alberta) netted his fourth goal of the year in the second game against RIT. His four goals this year are the most on the team, while he is tied for the team-lead in points with five. Junior Rob Forshner (Sundre, Alberta) netted his first goal of the year in the first game at RIT. For the season, he is tied for second on the team in assists with three and in points with four. For the fourth straight season, the Crusaders will be on ESPNU. Holy Cross’ game at Army on Jan. 18 will mark the fifth time a Crusader game has been on ESPNU as Holy Cross is 2-2-0 in those games. The previous four times were the 3-1 win over Army at the Hart Center on Nov. 4, 2007, the 7-0 loss at Quinnipiac on Jan. 28, 2007, the 4-3 overtime victory over Minnesota in the first round of the NCAA West Regional Semifinals on Mar. 24, 2006, and the 5-2 loss at North Dakota in the NCAA West Regional Finals on Mar. 25, 2006.

Mercyhurst: The Mercyhurst College Men’s Hockey team concluded its non-conference slate two weeks ago with back-to-back losses to Nebraska-Omaha. The Lakers fell in both games by the scores of 3-1 and 5-2. Senior Ryan Toomey tallied his first goal of the season in game one while sophomores Dan Bremner and Steve Cameron added scores in the second. Mercyhurst is now 0-6 on the season, with all six losses coming on the road. Cameron currently leads the team with three goals and four assists for seven points. Senior Matt Lundin has started in five games this season with a goals against average of 5.83 and a save percentage of .866. The Lakers open up Atlantic Hockey play this weekend with a pair of games against Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. Mercyhurst was 2-1-1 against the Crusaders last season and is 16-10-4 over the past ten seasons.

Rochester Institute of Technology: RIT swept Holy Cross this past weekend, scoring five goals in each game. The Tigers have scored five goals versus the Crusaders in seven straight games dating back to 2007. RIT has won the last 10 games versus Holy Cross, including eight at the Division I level. The Tigers penalty-killing was excellent over the weekend. RIT held Holy Cross to three power play goals in 21 chances (14.2%), including 1-for-10 on Saturday and 2-for-11 on Friday. RIT also tallied two short-handed goals on Saturday. It was the first time RIT had tallied two short-handed goals since February 14, 2003. The Tigers power play went 5-for-14 (35.7%) over the weekend including 3-for-7 on Friday and 2-for-7 on Saturday. The five goals scored by RIT were the most goals scored by the Tigers so far this season. The previous high was four goals versus Clarkson back on October 17. RIT had 13 different players tally points this past weekend. Seven of the 13 players had multiple-point nights, including Dan Ringwald who had three assists on Friday night.

Sacred Heart: The Pioneers lost three of four points to Army over the weekend, falling in West Point on Friday and skating to a 3-3 tie Saturday in Milford. Junior Erik Boisvert led the offense with a goal and two assists. Freshman Matt Gingera had two assists for the second straight week and now has a four game point scoring streak. Sophomore Dave Berube scored his first collegiate goal Saturday night The Pioneers are idle this week, their first weekend off of the season, after playing eight games in the season’s first four weeks. In the first four weeks of the season the Pioneers faced the defending AHA tournament champions (Air Force), defending AHA regular season champions (Army), the national runner up (Notre Dame) and AHA semifinalist RIT. SHU returns to action November 14-15 in a home-and-home series with AIC.
