Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week

 

Jordan Cyr - Holy Cross
Sophomore, Forward, Winnipeg, MAN

Cyr scored four goals in the two games against Mercyhurst. In the first game, he netted two goals, while in the second game he also scored two goals including the game-winner in overtime for the 4-3 victory. For the year, his four goals are tied for first on the team, while his seven points are tied for second.

Joe Calvi - Bentley
Sophomore, Goaltender, New Lenox, Ill.

Calvi stopped 24 shots and earned his third career shutout as the Falcons blanked the Huskies 1-0 in Bentley's home opener Friday night. Calvi made 10 saves in the first period when UConn was threatening most. He helped force UConn into a 0-7 night on the power play and withstood a two man disadvantage in the final minutes when the Huskies pulled their goalie after already being on the power play.

Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Week

 

Rody Selk - American International
Freshman, Forward, Minot, N.D.

Had a goal and an assist in a 4-3 win over Army on Friday night. Selk found the back of the net, for the first time in his collegiate career, in the first period to give the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead over the Black Knights. He then had an assists on the game-winning goal.

Atlantic Hockey Honor Roll

Tom Mele, American International (So., F, Bronx, N.Y.) - Had two goals in the weekend home-and-home with Army. Netted his first goal of the season in the 4-3 win over the Black Knight, the goal gave AIC a 3-2 lead heading into the third period. Mele scored the Yellow Jackets lone goal in the weekend finale to cut the Army lead to 2-1.

Dan Ramirez, American International (So., G, Rochester, N.Y.) - Made 32 saves, including 12 in the second period, to propel AIC to its first victory of the season.

Owen Meyer, Army (Jr., F, Dundee, Ill.) - Meyer scored three goals and was credited with an assist as Army split a weekend series with AIC. Meyer scored twice in a 4-3 loss at the Olympia Ice Center and then added a short-handed goal and assist in a 3-1 Army win at Tate Rink. In addition to his four points, Meyer was a +4 for the weekend.

Jeff Gumaer, Bentley (Sr., F, Wesbster Grove, Mo.) - Gumaer scored the game’s only goal on the power play in Bentley’s 1-0 win over Connecticut Friday night. He now has two game-winning goals on the season after beating Rensselaer with an overtime goal on Oct. 18.

Kyle Atkins, Holy Cross (Fr., D, Brockville, ONT) - Atkins earned his first two collegiate points with two assists in the two-game series against Mercyhurst. He had one assist in each game.

Brodie Sheahan, Holy Cross (Jr., F, Lethbridge, ALB) - Sheahan recorded five assists in the series with Mercyhurst. In the first game, he had two assists, while in the second game, he had three assists including on the game-winning goal in the 4-3 overtime victory. Sheahan has at least one point in six straight games. He leads the team in assists with six and points with 10, while he is tied for first on the team in goals with four.

Steve Cameron, Mercyhurst (So., F, Mission, BC) - Cameron had a goal in each game as the Lakers and Holy Cross split a pair of 4-3 overtime decisions. His power play goal put Mercyhurst in front 3-2 in Friday’s third period and he scored the opening goal of the game Saturday, another power play marker. He has a 3-game goal-scoring streak and now has 5 goals in 8 games and at least one point in 6 of the 8. Last season, he totaled 11 lamplighters in 40 contests and had no more than two games in succession with at least a point. He leads the team in goals, assists, power play goals, and points.

Matt Lundin, Mercyhurst (Sr., G, Apple Valley, Minn.) - Lundin stopped a combined 63 of 70 shots (.900) in a weekend split at Holy Cross. He turned back 31 of 34 (.911) in a 4-3 overtime win Friday, the Lakers’ first win of the season.

Atlantic Hockey Team Notes

Air Force: 8-0 start ties as the best in school history. The 1971-72 team was also 8-0...8-0 start is the best ever vs. Division I team...Eight-game winning streak is longest in school history vs. Division I teams...AFA is the only undefeated and untied team in the nation that has played more than one game...The “FLO” line of Frider, Lamoureux and Olson has scored 21 of the team’s 41 goals this season...AFA is now 14-5-2 all-time vs. Bentley. In the last four games vs. Bentley, AFA has outscored BC, 25-6, dating back to the playoffs last season...AFA has four of the top scorers in the nation as Lamoureux leads the nation with 19 points, Olson is second with 17 and Frider is fourth with 12...Scored first in seven of the eight games...Only trailed for 26 minutes all season. All came early in the Sacred Heart game on Oct. 11...Killed 13 straight opponent power plays, all in the Bentley series...Scored a PPG in three straight games. AFA is seven for 23 on the PP in the last three games...Out-scored opponents 25-5 in four home games this season...The top scoring team in the nation with 5.12 goals per game (among teams who have played more than one game)...Defenseman Greg Flynn is third in the nation in scoring by defensemen with 11 points (2-9-11). Flynn has a point in seven of the eight games this season...Lamoureux and Frider have scored in every game this season and have eight-game scoring streaks...Lamoureux has scored a goal in seven of the eight games this season.

American International: AIC went 1-1-0 in the past weekend series with Army. In the first game, the Yellow Jackets pulled out their first victory of the season, beating the Black Knights 4-3. Three members of the team recored their first goals of the season, junior Josh Froese ,sophomore Tom Mele, and freshman Rody Selk, who’s goal was the first of his collegiate career. Goaltender sophomore Dan Ramirez made 32 stops to propel AIC to its first victory over Army in their past seven tries. In the weekend finale the Black Knights posted a 3-1 vicotry on the Yellow Jackets. Mele scored his second goal of the season and of the series, while senior netminder Tom Fenton stopped 35 shots in a strong performance.

Army: The Black Knights improved to 2-4-1 overall and 2-3-1 in conference competition with a split against American International. Each team won on their home ice as the Black Knights took a 3-1 win at Tate Rink and AIC pulled out a 4-3 win at the Olympia Ice Center ... Army’s game on Saturday was its last home game of 2008. The Black Knights have road games at RIT, Mercyhurst and Canisius as well as the Dartmouth Tournament and Ohio State Tournament prior to a Jan. 9-10, 2009, matchup with Mercyhurst ... Owen Meyer continues to lead the team in scoring after posting three goals and an assist over the weekend. Meyer has 12 points off of eight goals and four assists. He had two power play and two short-handed goals ... Cody Omilusik shares the team assist lead with Meyer ... Mike Hull and Eric Sefchik also have four assists ... Sefchik and senior captain Zach McKelvie both scored their first goals of the season in Saturday’s win ... Josh Kassel returned to the net after a three-game layoff and stopped 24 shots in the 3-1 win on Saturday ... Jay Clark played in his third consecutive game on Friday and made 21 saves ... Army will begin an 11-game road trip with a two-game series at RIT.

Bentley: Senior Jeff Gumaer’s first period power play goal was all the offense Bentley needed as the Falcons defeated Connecticut 1-0 in Bentley’s home opener Friday night. Goalie Joe Calvi stopped 24 shots for his first win of the season and third career shutout. It’s the second time in his career he has shutout the Huskies. All three of his shutouts have come at home. The Falcons have now won four straight home openers, and are unbeaten in their last five. With his goal, Gumaer now has 47 career goals, six ahead of teammate Dain Prewitt for the most in Bentley’s Division I history. Saturday night, Bentley fell to #10 Northeastern in the first ever meeting between the two programs. Trailing 2-0 in the third period, a goal by sophomore Erik Peterson cut the Huskies’ lead to 2-1. However a goal by Northeastern senior captain Joe Vitale just 53 seconds later effectively ended any hopes of an upset. Freshman Kyle Rank got the start in net and put in a solid performance, saving 27 shots. After allowing five power play goals in two games against Air Force last weekend, Bentley’s penalty kill unit went 14-14 in the two games. The Falcons are back on the road this coming weekend with two games at Mercyhurst. Both games at Ryan Skating arena last season ended in 3-3 ties. Bentley hasn’t won at Mercyhurst since Feb. 1, 2003.

Canisius: The Griffs were off this past weekend and currently stand in second in the Atlantic Hockey standings with five points. Dave Kostuch was recently named the National Rookie of the Month. The freshman ranks 13th in the country among rookies with 0.86 points per game, while his 0.71 goals per game are the top mark by a first-year player. The Griffs return to action on Tuesday, squaring off against Niagara in the annual Battle of the Bridge grudge match. Canisius currently leads the all-sport series by an 8-2 margin. The Griffs will then host Connecticut for a pair of games during the weekend. The Griffs will host the Huskies on Saturday and Sunday at the Buffalo State Sports Arena.

Connecticut: UConn continued on the road for the second straight weekend ending their road trip at Bentley. The meeting between the two teams was the 28th of the kind with UConn leading the series 17-8-2. But Bentley was able to score first during a power play at 12:45 and held off the Husky attack for the remainder of the game shutting out UConn (their second time this season). UConn will be back in action against Yale for their first meeting with the Bulldogs at Mark E. Freitas Ice Forum on Tuesday, November 11 at 7:05 p.m.

Holy Cross: The Crusaders will host Air Force in a two-game series on Nov. 14-15. Holy Cross is 2-2-1 so far this season in Worcester. Sophomore Jordan Cyr (Winnipeg, Manitoba) scored his first four goals as a Crusader in the two-game series against Mercyhurst, including the game-winner in the 4-3 overtime victory in the second game. He is tied for the team-lead in goals with four and he is tied for second on the team in points with seven. Junior Brodie Sheahan (Lethbridge, Alberta) has recorded at least one point in six straight games. He had five assists in the two games against Mercyhurst. His six assists and 10 points are first on the team, while his four goals are tied for first. Junior Rob Forshner (Sundre, Alberta) also has at least one point in six straight games. He had one goal and two assists in the series with Mercyhurst. His five assists this year are second on the team and his seven points are tied for second. Freshman Matt Clune (Toronto, Ontario) netted his first collegiate goal in the first game against Mercyhurst. Freshman Kyle Atkins (Brockville, Ontario) recorded his first two collegiate points in the series with Mercyhurst as he had one assist in each game. Holy Cross’ win against Mercyhurst was the first in overtime since its 4-3 win over Minnesota on Mar. 24, 2006 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Sophomore goalie Adam Roy (Feeding Hills, Mass.) has 919 career saves which is already fourth on Holy Cross’ all-time Division I saves list. Sophomore Everett Sheen (Lethbridge, Alberta) has two goals and three assists for five points on the year. His five points are fourth on the team.

Mercyhurst: Counting the AHA championship game last March, the Lakers have now played in three successive overtime games in the conference (1-2-0). Mercyhurst now leads the all-time series against the Crusaders 19-10-4. Sophomore forward Steve Cameron had a goal in each game. His power play goal put Mercyhurst in front 3-2 in Friday’s third period and he scored the opening goal of the game Saturday, another power play marker. He has a 3-game goal-scoring streak and now has 5 goals in 8 games. Last season, he totaled 11 lamplighters in 40 contests and had no more than two games in succession with at least a point. He leads the team in goals, assists, power play goals, and points. Senior Matt Pierce ended a 3-game scoring drought with an assist Saturday. 5th year senior Ryan Toomey’s game-winner Friday was his first game-winner since the 2005-06 season. Mercyhurst will play its first regular season home games this weekend when conference rival Bentley visits. Mercyhurst leads the all-time series 22-5-4. The teams played a pair of 3-3 overtime ties last season at Bentley. The last Mercyhurst overtime win over Holy Cross was March 18, 2005 in the conference semifinals at Quinnipiac. The scores was also 4-3 and the game-winner was scored by Ryan Toomey.

Rochester Institute of Technology: The Tigers special teams struggled mightily during Friday’s 6-2 non-conference loss at Niagara. Niagara went 4-for-10 on the power-play on Friday, while RIT was 1-of-13 and allowed Niagara a shorthanded goal. RIT, down 5-2 midway through the second period, had a two-minute 5-on-3 advantage that they were unable to capitalize on. The weekend before against Holy Cross, RIT’s power-play went 5-for-14 and scored a pair of shorthanded goals. The four power-play goals allowed by RIT on Friday were the most allowed in a game by the Tigers since a 6-2 loss to Quinnipiac on Oct. 14, 2005 (that was RIT’s first game as a Division I program). RIT is currently 3-5-1 this season. The Tigers started 3-5-0 last season and 3-5-2 in 2006-07 before catching fire down the stretch to post 21 and 19 win seasons, respectively. Freshman Chris Haltigin recorded his first collegiate assist on Friday. Tyler Brenner and Brennan Sarazin scored for the Tigers, who out-shot Niagara, 26-20. Sean Murphy is tied for second nationally with two game-winning goals. Junior defenseman Dan Ringwald is in the top-10 nationally among defensemen with nine points in nine games. The Tigers look to get back on track this weekend, as they host a pair of games against Army. The teams played to a pair of ties last season at RIT, 2-2 and 1-1. The series between the two schools is even at 1-1-2.

Sacred Heart: The Pioneers were idle this week, their first day off of the season. SHU played eight games in the first four weeks of the season, one of only two AHA teams to play so many games early in the season. SHU completed a season-opening stretch against the AHA defending regular season champion (Army), defending AHA tournament champion (Air Force) and the defending National Runner-Ups (Notre Dame). The Pioneers start the second part of their schedule with a home-and-home series with AIC this weekend. The teams meet Friday in Springfield and Saturday in Milford.
