Against Colgate, Shupe led a late Canisius rally, registering the primary assist on a goal with 3:50 left in regulation as the Griffs defeated the Raiders 7-6 in overtime. Shupe has now recorded 13 points during his rookie season (2 goals and 11 assists) and is tied for the conference lead among freshmen.

Bentley: Bentley won the Toyota UConn Classic midweek and scored perhaps the biggest win in program history in the process, defeating No. 15 UMass in the final 4-1. The Falcons started off the tournament with a 4-1 win over UConn to earn two Atlantic Hockey points. Two first period goals by a pair of defensemen, Trent Bonnett and Ryan Kayfes, gave Bentley a 2-0 lead. With the score 3-1 in the third period, a power play goal by senior Marc Menzione at 5:36 gave the Falcons a comfortable three-goal lead. Sophomore Kyle Rank made 23 saves for the win. Against UMass Rank was the star, making 42 saves, 17 in each of the first two periods. After a scoreless first period, the Minutemen took a 1-0 lead at 10:52 of the second, but a goal by freshman Brett Hartung minutes later tied the game. In the third period, senior Bobby Preece put Bentley up 2-1 with a power play goal, then 24 seconds later junior Jeremy Robert made it 3-1 with his first goal of the season. An empty net goal by junior Dustin Cloutier with 1:24 left sealed the win. Rank was named MVP of the tournament after going 2-0 with a 1.00 GAA and a .970 save percentage, while Menzione and Preece were named to the All-Tournament team. The win is Bentley’s second in as many years against a Hockey East school after last season’s win at Maine. The victory is also the second in program history against a ranked opponent. The Falcons, currently at 8-7-3 overall and 6-4-2 in the conference, are in fifth place with 14 points, one behind fourth place Canisius. The Falcons and Golden Griffins meet this weekend in Watertown, Mass., after the two teams split a series in Buffalo a month ago.

Canisius: Canisius wrapped up non-conference play by earning three points against CHA foe and future Atlantic Hockey member Robert Morris and ECAC foe Colgate. The Griffs played to a 5-5 draw against Robert Morris on Dec. 15 and defeated Colgate on Dec. 20, 7-6 in overtime. Canisius finished its non-conference schedule with a 2-3-1 record. The win against Colgate marked the Griffs second all-time victory against an ECAC school. Canisius is now 2-0-1 in its last three games against the conference, with all three contests going into overtime, and is 2-5-1 overall. The 13 total goals in the game against Colgate represents the most goals scored in a Canisius game since a 7-6 victory over Holy Cross on Jan. 8, 2000. It also marks the third time this that the Griffs have scored at least seven goals in a game, tied for the second most in the program’s Division I history. The 1998-99 Canisius team scored at least seven goals on seven occasions. The week also continued a continuing theme in Canisius games where the team leading with five minutes remaining in regulation did not get the victory. In games the Griffs played during the month of December, the team leading with five minutes remaining in the third went just 1-2-1, with only Canisius’ 9-3 victory over Bentley standing up. Senior defender Carl Hudson and junior forward Cory Conacher both continued their dominant play as of late during the non-conference weekend. Both players extended their career-long streak of recording a point to eight games. For Hudson, he established a new school record for scoring streaks by a defender, topping the previous mark of six set by Daryl Pierce in January 2003. Hudson, who has also scored a goal in a personal-best four-straight games, also set the program’s Division I record for most career power-play goals. His extra-man tally against Robert Morris was the 23rd of his career, one more than Michael Cohen scored from 2003 to 2007. Of his 36 career goals, 23 have come on the power play (63.9 percent). The senior currently leads all Atlantic Hockey players with 12 power-play points this season and is tied for fifth nationally among defensemen with 1.00 points per game. Conacher is currently tied for third in the country with 1.50 points per game and is seventh with his 13 goals this season. Both numbers also lead all Atlantic Hockey players. Junior Vincent Scarsella has also been hot for the Griffs this season, ranking second on the team with 23 points and eight goals after registering four points during the week on two goals and two assists. Scarsella moved into fifth place in the school’s Division I record book with his 57th career assist. The junior currently leads all Atlantic Hockey players with 15 helpers this season and ranks 10th nationally. Senior Jason Weeks had a strong showing in the victory against Colgate, recording four points on a goal and three assists. He scored the game-winning goal in overtime to help the Griffs record their second-ever victory over an ECAC school. Weeks has now totaled 97 career points, 46 goals and 51 assists. He is three points shy of becoming just the fifth Griff, and second this season, to record 100 career points at the Division I level. He is also three goals shy of the program’s career record and is now tied for seventh with 51 career helpers. Canisius returns to the ice this weekend with a pair of Atlantic Hockey games at Bentley. The two teams split an earlier series this season, with Bentley winning the opener, 5-4, and Canisius dominating the finale, 9-3.

Connecticut: The Huskies returned to the ice since the first weekend in December at the Toyota UConn Classic on December 29 and 30. UConn took on Bentley on the first day of competition falling to the Falcons 4-1. Freshman Sean Ambrosie (Moorhead, Minn.) scored the lone Husky goal on the night. In the consolation round game, UConn faced off against the No. 18 team in the country, Union College, and battled to a 7-0 loss. Union scored at least two goals in each period recording two in the first and second and another three in the third period. The Huskies look to bounce back against Air Force on January 8 and 9 in their 13th and 14th road games of the season. UConn will appear on national television for the first time in the history of the program when they take on the Falcons on January 8 at 8 p.m. ET.

Holy Cross: Sophomore Mike Daly was named to the all-tournament team at the Ledyard National Bank Classic as he scored his first collegiate game-winning goal and also had an assist in the 4-2 win at Dartmouth on Jan. 3. For the season, he leads the team with a career-best eight assists and is tied for third with a career-best nine points. For his career, he has three goals and 13 assists for 16 points. With the win over Dartmouth, Holy Cross is now 5-5-2 in its last 12 games against ECACHL opponents, including a 1-1-1 record this season. Previously this season, the Crusaders had a 7-3 home loss on Nov. 28 to No. 11 Yale and a 1-1 tie at home against No. 7 Quinnipiac on Dec. 10. Junior Everett Sheen is first on the team with eight goals and 13 points. Senior Brodie Sheahan has the most career goals (36), assists (50) and points (86) of any current Crusader. He scored an empty-net goal in the 4-2 win over Dartmouth. His 36 goals are 10th on the all-time Holy Cross Division I goals list. Also his 20 career power play goals are tied for sixth on the all-time Holy Cross Division I list. So far this season he has posted six goals and three assists for nine points. His six goals this season are tied for second on the team and his nine points are tied for third. Nine of Holy Cross’ last 11 goals have been scored on the power play. All three of the Crusaders’ goals against No. 11 Yale were on the man-advantage and all three of Holy Cross’ goals over the two games versus RIT were on the power play. The Crusaders then went 0-1 versus No. 7 Quinnipiac and 0-5 against No. 14 UMass Lowell, but then went 3-7 in the 4-2 win over Dartmouth. Holy Cross is 9-30 (.300) over the last six games while on the power play. The Crusaders now have a 57-52-3 (.522) all-time record in 60 regular season tournaments and have won 10 championships with the last being the 1992 Crusader Classic. Holy Cross is 2-1-3 in their last six regular season tournament games. The Crusaders will only play one home game in the month of January with seven of the eight games being away from Worcester. After playing at the Ledyard National Bank Classic last week, Holy Cross will play two games at RIT (Jan. 8-9), a home game versus AIC (Jan. 15), a road contest with AIC (Jan. 16) and two games at Air Force (Jan. 22-23). The Crusaders are 4-5-0 away from the HartCenter this season. Last season, Holy Cross compiled a 5-12-3 record on its opponents’ home ice. Holy Cross is now 3-3-1 all-time versus Dartmouth. Former Holy Cross hockey player and current Grand Rapids Griffins’ forward Patrick Rissmiller will participate in the 2010 AHL All-Star Classic at the CumberlandCountyCivicCenter in Portland, Maine on Jan. 19 as a member of the PlanetUSA All-Star Team. This is the second time that he has earned an AHL All-Star selection as he did it in 2006 as a member of the Cleveland Barons. Holy Cross will host the 2010 NCAA Men’s Hockey Division I Northeast Regional. The dates are Saturday and Sunday, March 27-28 at the DCUCenter in Worcester. The 6-1 loss on Friday was RIT’s second worst in five seasons of Division I play. RIT lost to Boston College, 6-0 on Dec. 30, 2007. On Saturday, the Tigers were shutout for the first time in 42 games, dating back to a 2-0 loss at Air Force on Dec. 5, 2008. The last time RIT was shutout, they rattled off 11 straight wins. It will be the third and fourth meetings in the last month between the two schools.
