made 26 saves against No. 18 Quinnipiac as the Falcons nearly
pulled the upset. Rank made 16 saves in the third period.
Preston Shupe, Canisius (Freshman, Defensemen, Toronto, ONT) -
Shupe helped nearly lead the Griffs back from a three-goal deficit
against Lake Superior State. The freshmen switched lines in the
opening game and joined with Cory Conacher and Vincent Scarsella.
The move paid off as the line netted three goals to tie the game.
Shupe recorded his first collegiate point in the comeback,
registering an assist on one of Conacher’s goals.
Paul Chiasson, Mercyhurst (Freshman, Forward, Toronto, ONT) -
Chiasson scored his first collegiate goal in a 4-3 loss to Western
Michigan this past weekend in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Toronto, Ontario

to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. The score would eventually grow to
2-0 in favor of Mercyhurst before WMU rallied with three
unanswered. Mercyhurst eventually lost 4-3 on a late goal in the
third.
Cameron Burt, RIT (Sophomore, Forward, Detroit, Mich.) - Burt
scored his first two goals of the season, and was a force

Bentley: Bentley played close games against teams ranked in the
top-20, falling to No. 20 Northeastern and No. 18 Quinnipiac by
scores of 3-2. The Falcons took an early 1-0 lead against the
Huskies, but were hurt by taking 10 penalties and having two goals
disallowed. All five goals in the game were on the power play, with
senior Marc Menzione and junior Erik Peterson scoring for the
Falcons. Against Quinnipiac, a second period goal by senior Kane
Osmars tied the score at two, and that was the score heading into
overtime before Scott Zurevinski won it for the Bobcats 29 seconds
in. Sophomore Kyle Rank made 26 saves. Bentley plays its home and
Atlantic Hockey opener this Friday against UConn at Ryan Skating
Arena.
Canisius: Canisius lost a pair of games at Lake Superior State,
5-4 and 3-0. The Griffs are now 1-3-0 during the 2009-10 campaign.
The Griffs 3-0 setback to the Lakers on Saturday was the first time
that Canisius was shut out in 45 games, dating back to the 2007-08
season. The 45 games with a goal was a program record. In
Friday’s 5-4 defeat, junior Cory Conacher led a Canisius
charge that nearly led to the team rallying from an early 3-0
deficit. Conacher scored three-consecutive goals to tie the game at
three before Lake Superior State held on for the victory. The hat
trick was the first of Conacher’s career and the ninth in the
program’s Division I history. It was also the second natural
hat trick for the Griffs since moving to Division I. Chris Duggan
recorded the other natural hat trick on Feb. 19, 1999 against
Sacred Heart. Junior Vincent Scarsella matched a career high with
three assists on the night, registering the primary helper on each
of Conacher’s three goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Dan Morrison
plus freshmen Chris Barrea, Steven Shafer and Preston Shupe also
recorded their first collegiate points with assists during the
comeback. For Morrison, he is the first Canisius goalie to post an
assist since Dan Giffin against AIC on Feb. 24, 2006. Senior Ryan
Klusendorf scored the other goal for the Griffs, marking the first
time in his career that he netted goals in back-to-back games.
Canisius opens Atlantic Hockey play next weekend with a pair of
home games against Holy Cross. The two teams met twice last year in
Worcester, Mass., with the Crusaders taking 3-of-4 points in the
series.
Connecticut: The Huskies went 0-2-0 on the weekend dropping two
non-conference games to CCHA opponent Ferris State. After the two
games, Ferris State improved their series record with the Huskies
to 6-0-0. UConn battled in the first game. Sophomore Daniel Naurato
recorded the first goal of the game giving the Huskies a 1-0
advantage. He was helped out by his linemates freshmen Jim
Gallagher and Sean Ambrosie on the goal who each recorded the first
points of their collegiate career. Ferris State answered in the
second period notching two unanswered goals for the lead and the
ultimate game one victory. On Saturday, Ferris State got out to a
3-0 lead before the Huskies were able to get on the board. Ambrosie
tallied the first goal of his career with some help from junior
Jeff Sapieha. But that was all the Huskies would manage as Ferris
State rattled off another three goals to end with a 6-1
victory.
Holy Cross: The Crusaders start their Atlantic Hockey season with
two games on the road at the Buffalo State Sports Arena versus
Canisius on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 24-25, at 4:00 p.m. Holy
Cross leads the all-time series 24-11-8. This is the second time
that Holy Cross has started the league season against the Golden
Griffins as they have a 1-0-1 record. The Crusaders are 5-0-1 in
Atlantic Hockey openers with a 3-1 win at Canisius on Oct. 11,
2003, a 3-1 win at AIC on Nov. 5, 2004, a 1-0 victory over Army on
Oct. 28, 2005, a 4-1 win over Mercyhurst on Oct. 20, 2006, a 4-1
win at Mercyhurst on Oct. 26, 2007 and a 1-1 tie versus Canisius on
Oct. 17, 2008. Freshman goalie Thomas Tysowsky had a strong
collegiate debut as he made 25 saves and allowed two goals for a
.926 save percentage at Merrimack. Freshman forward Erik Vos also
made his collegiate debut versus Merrimack. Holy Cross will host
the 2010 NCAA Men’s Hockey Division I Northeast Regional. The
dates are Saturday and Sunday, March 27-28 at the DCU Center in
Worcester. The semifinals will be at 1:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on
March. 27, while the finals will be at 5:30 p.m. on March 28. All
three games will be on ESPNU. HC held the event for the first time
in 2008.
Mercyhurst: Mercyhurst fell to 0-4 on the season after suffering a
series sweep to Western Michigan this past weekend in Kalamazoo,
Mich…The Lakers were defeated 5-1 and 4-3…In the 4-3
setback, Mercyhurst saw a 2-0 advantage vanish as WMU rallied with
three unanswered before scoring the game-winner late in the
third…Four different players tallied goals in the series,
including last season’s leading scorer Steve
Cameron…The power-play unit broke an 0-for-18 scoreless
streak when Brandon Coccimiglio scored on a 5-on-4 opportunity in
the second game…Neil Graham also tallied a goal on a
short-handed chance in that game…Mercyhurst is now 1-3
lifetime against the Broncos…Atlantic Hockey play opens this
weekend as the Lakers face Army at West Point…Mercyhurst
went 4-2 against the Black Knights in 2008-09 to improve to 21-9-0
in the all-time series.
Rochester Institute of Technology: The Tigers continued its house
of horrors traveling up to the North Country, losing at St.
Lawrence, 3-1 and Clarkson, 5-3. Interestingly enough, RIT out-shot
both teams by a wide margin, 43-20 on Friday and 45-29 on Saturday.
The 88 shots in a weekend are the most since the Tigers fired 96
shots against Mercyhurst on Nov. 16-17, 2007. RIT is now 0-5
all-time at St. Lawrence’s Appleton Arena, and 1-7 at
Clarkson. RIT Head Coach Wayne Wilson remains stuck on 188 career
wins (188-94-24). He needs one win to become the all-time leader in
coaching wins at RIT, as he is tied with Eric Hoffberg. RIT has
allowed two shorthanded goals in three games this season. They
allowed just three total in 38 games last season. RIT scored its
first power-play goal of the season in its 12th chance on Saturday.
They have allowed more shorthanded goals (2), than power-play goals
scored (1). Freshman defenseman Chris Tanev scored his first
collegiate goal on Saturday. Classmate Adam Hartley scored his
first goal on Friday. Sophomore defenseman Chris Haltigin has a
point in all three games. RIT has lost five straight games to ECAC
opponents. This weekend, the Tigers open up Atlantic Hockey
Association play against three-time defending champion Air Force in
Colorado Springs, Colo. The games on Friday and Saturday get
underway at 9:05 p.m. Like RIT, Air Force will also enter the
weekend winless (0-4). RIT has never been swept in an AHA weekend
series. RIT is 55-21-8 all-time in AHA play. Last season, RIT and
Air Force shared the AHA regular season crown (20-6-2) and split
the season series, 2-2-0, each going 1-1 on home ice. The all-time
series between the two schools is tied a 10-10-2. Since 2005, the
two teams have met 17 times, with Air Force holding a 8-7-2 edge
during that time.
