The Griffs picked up our first two points of the season in
Atlantic Hockey play this past weekend. We battled a very tough
opponent in the Air Force Falcons to a 3-1 victory on Saturday
afternoon, which also happened to be Halloween.
Seen in the large crowd were several costumes and a bunch of crazy
Griff student-athletes all hopped up on candy. From what some of
the boys were saying after the game – if you give those
lacrosse guys some candy and costumes, you’re in for a fun
night.
All kidding aside, it was a great atmosphere on Saturday and from
all the guys, thank you to all who came out and supported us this
weekend. It was a fun night and the hockey team looks forward to
getting out and supporting future events around campus.
Unfortunately, we could not pick up the sweep on Sunday afternoon.
We came up a little short and had to settle for a split with the
defending league champs from Air Force. All in all, it is nice to
be on the board in the Atlantic Hockey standings and we need to
bring the same effort every night in this tough conference.
It is a very competitive league and this weekend we are up against
another good club in Mercyhurst. We are back to the usual Friday
and Saturday games this weekend, with a home-and-home series with
one of our biggest rivals – the Lakers. We play in Erie on
Friday then return home on Saturday. The games are always close
against the Lakers and this weekend should be no different. Once
again with the Saturday and Sunday games, we had Monday off and
since we play on Friday, it is a short week of practice with only
three this week, as opposed to the usual four.
It was a bit of a shock this past weekend for our freshman because
for some, this was the first year they were unable to go
trick-or-treating on Halloween. It was tough explaining to my young
roommate Torrey Lindsay that he could not dress up in his usual
farmer costume and go door to door. Pete MacDougall also told me he
ran into a similar situation with his young roommate Preston Shupe
when he had to deny Preston at the door with his Buzz Lightyear
spacesuit on. Thank goodness the RA’s in the dorms hand out
candy or freshmen Chris, Ben, and Steven would have been mighty
upset as well.
As our young friends learned, college is about growing up and
while this Halloween may have been disappointing to them, they will
soon forget about it because the weeks are flying by and there is
not enough time to be disappointed about not getting candy. Once
again, the weekend is fast approaching and there is hockey to be
played. Until next time, keep your stick on the ice.
