HAVERHILL, Mass. --  For an eighth straight year a new standard has been set in the classroom for the student-athletes of Atlantic Hockey as 175 have earned a spot on the All-Academic Team. The 175 student-athletes eclipses the mark of 135 that were honored after the 2010-11 season. In the eighth year of existence, 15 players earned their fourth appearance on the All-Academic squad. In addition, 24 are appearing for the third time, while 39 are being honored for the second time.

For the second straight season sophomore netminder, Ryan Leets of Army, has been named the Atlantic Hockey Top-Scholar Athlete.  Leets, who is majoring in Civil Engineering, started 15 games this season in net for the Black Knights, posting a 4-8-3 mark with a 2.91 goals against average and a .916 saves percentage.  Last season Ryan shared the Atlantic Hockey Top-Scholar Athlete with three others.

Along with being named the AHA Top-Scholar Athlete, Leets also earned a spot on the Academic All-Star Team, for posting the highest GPA at his position.  Sophomore defenseman, Cheyne Rocha of Army, joins his teammate on the Academic All-Star Team.  Also on the blueline on the Academic All-Star Team are juniors Trevor Eckenswiller and Chris Haltigin both of RIT.  Junior Kyle Maggard, Army; freshman Ryan Bohrer, Canisius; and senior Sean Murphy, RIT are the forwards on the Academic All-Star Team.

Of the 175 student-athletes that were recognized as member of the All-Academic Team this season, 78 were members of the 2009-10 squad, and 43 are freshman. Robert Morris had a high of 24 members on the All-Academic Team with American International and Niagara following with 23 and 18, respectively.  AIC had the most returning members on the All-Academic Team with 16, while Army followed with 13 players that appeared on last year’s squad.  Of the 25 players that earned All-Conference and All-Rookie honors this past season, 13 of them were also named to the All- Academic Team.

To qualify for the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team an individual must post a 3.0 grade point average or higher in all of the academic periods during which his team was actively competing. Atlantic Hockey’s Top Scholar Athlete is an award given annually to the player or players who achieves the highest grade point average over the course of the academic semesters of competition.

The Atlantic Hockey Association was formed when nine institutions joined together in 2003, to found a new Division-I men’s ice hockey conference. The league currently consists of twelve members: Air Force Academy, American International College, Army, Bentley University, Canisius College, the University of Connecticut, the College of the Holy Cross, Mercyhurst College, Niagara University, Robert Morris University, Rochester Institute of Technology, and Sacred Heart University.
