WEST POINT, N.Y.  – Sixteen home games, including contests against service academy rivals Air Force and Royal Military College, highlight the 2011-12 Army hockey schedule, head coach Brian Riley announced.

The Black Knights will host non-conference opponents Union, Brown and RMC as well as Atlantic Hockey Association rivals Connecticut, Bentley, Mercyhurst, Canisius, Holy Cross, American International and Sacred Heart at Tate Rink.

Season tickets are now on sale. The RMC contest, announced after season tickets were put on sale, will be offered free to season ticket holders.

Ticket prices will remain the same for season ticket holders with the packages starting at $159, a savings of more than $5 over single-game tickets.

The hospitality areas and rink-side seating remain a popular choice for fans. Similar to last season, all tickets to the hospitality area must be purchased in advanced and no tickets will be sold the day of the game. While fans also need game tickets, hospitality passes are offered for just $15 and include access pregame and in the first and second intermissions.

Rink-side seating will continue at just $35 a game and offers fans an up-close view of the action. as well as a private hospitality area.

“We are very excited about the upcoming season and think our fans will be as well,” said Riley, who enters his eighth season. “Not only do our biggest rivals Air Force and RMC play at our rink, so do a host of quality opponents. Every game matters in this league, and we will have our work cut out for us this year, but playing 16 home games should help.”

For the second straight year, Army will play opponents in the Eastern pod of the AHA three times and those in the West twice.

Army officially opens practice for the 2011-12 season on Saturday, Oct. 1, with the annual Black and Gold scrimmage. The Black Knights then host Union and Connecticut in back-to-back weekends.

The Black Knights will hit the road for six-straight games, playing at Merrimack on Oct. 15, participating in the Cape Cod Classic against Colgate on Oct. 22 and traveling to Connecticut on Oct. 29.

Following a pair of games at RIT to open November, Army plays at Sacred Heart on Nov. 11 and then welcomes Bentley the next night. The following weekend, Army travels to AIC and then hosts Brown on Nov. 19. Riley is a 1983 graduate of Brown where he served as team captain. Army and Brown are meeting for the first time since a 1-1 overtime time during the 2007-08 season.

Army will play at Robert Morris for the first time since the Colonials joined the conference last season after the Thanksgiving holiday.

A five-game December begins with two games against Mercyhurst at Tate Rink. Army will play at Holy Cross on Dec. 9 before a short break for Term-Ending Exams before returning to action at the UConn Classic on Dec. 29. Army plays the host school and then either RPI or UMass-Lowell on Dec. 30.

The Black Knights open the 2012 portion of the schedule with a pair of home games against Canisius on Jan. 6 and 7. Army will make the long trip to Niagara the next weekend.

Air Force returns to Tate Rink on Jan. 20-21 for two key games before a home-and-home series with Bentley to close the month.

Army and RMC renew their series, Feb. 4, at Tate Rink with Holy Cross set to visit the next weekend and cap Army’s second three-game homestand of the season.

The Black Knights will close the regular season with consecutive home-and-home series American International and Sacred Heart.

The AHA playoffs will be different this year with the first two rounds both being best-of-three series’ rather than a one-game first round.

“The Directors have agreed to a 12-team format, with all teams seeded based on the results of the regular season standings,” stated Commissioner Robert DeGregorio.

The top four teams will receive a bye in the first round. The first round match-ups will include the No. 5 seed hosting the No. 12 seed, the No. 6 seed hosting the No. 11 seed, the No. 7 seed hosting the No. 10 seed and the No. 8 seed hosting the No. 9 seed. This series will be a best two-out-of-three and will take place March 2-4.

The quarterfinal round will also be a best two-out-of-three series, which will take place March 9-11. The top four seeds will host the four teams advancing from the first round, with re-seeding taking place.

The quarterfinal winners will advance to the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, N.Y., where the semifinals and Championship games will be held on Friday and Saturday, March 16 and 17, respectively.  The four teams advancing will be re-seeded.

The winner of the Atlantic Hockey Championship will earn the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

“I think the new format is going to further enhance the competitiveness of the league, and it will certainly place more importance on the regular season schedule and where teams finish in the standings,” Commissioner DeGregorio stated.
