In the end, the Air Force Academy and American International College each collected its first win of the season last weekend in Colorado Springs.

But it took a winding and twisted road to reach their Atlantic Hockey split.

After falling behind 2-0 early in the second period on Friday night, AIC roared back with four straight goals on the way to a 5-3 win, its first ever over the Falcons in 21 attempts. Sophomore goalie Ben Meisner stopped 41 shots.

“This was a big win for us,” AIC coach Gary Wright told The Gazette of Colorado Springs after the game. “They came at us pretty hard at the end, and we battled. We got some timely goals, and our goaltender played with a lot of poise down the stretch. For us to be down like that on the road against a team with the stature of Air Force and to battle back and get back in, it was big.”

The Falcons got their revenge -- big-time -- the next night and rolled to a 12-0 win. Senior forward Jacques Lamoureux, junior forward Paul Weisgarber, sophomore forward John Kruse, freshmen forwards Jason Fabian and Tony Thomas, and junior goalie Stephen Caple were among the many Falcon standouts.

Lamoureux, who did not have a goal through the first four games, notched his third career hat trick. Weisgarber had a career-high two goals and Kruse had a career-high five points with two goals and three assists. Thomas had a goal and three assists. Caple, in his first action of the season and his first career start, stopped all 23 shots he faced. He had 19 career saves entering the game.

Fabian had a couple of first period goals that helped the Falcons to a 5-0 lead after 20 minutes. This time, there was no letting up and Air Force extended the rout with six unanswered goals in the second period.

“We have such better depth and personnel than we did last year and when everyone is difficult to play against, we can have some success,” said Air Force coach Frank Serratore afterwards. “This team has been through hell the last couple weeks losing our first four games. Some of that was self-inflicted, but it was sure nice to get this one tonight.”

AIC is off this weekend and plays its next game at Sacred Heart on Nov. 6.
