HAVERHILL, Mass. -- The Atlantic Hockey Association and its coaches have chosen the All-Conference Teams for the 2013-14 regular season. All student-athletes were nominated by their own coaches and voted on by the remaining 11 coaches.
The forward line for the First Team All-Conference include Brett Gensler, Bentley; Matt Zay, Mercyhurst and Cody Wydo, Robert Morris. Joining that trio on the blue line are Nick Jones, Mercyhurst and Steve Weinstein, Bentley. Jimmy Sarjeant will man the net on the First Team All-Conference. Gensler became a three-time First Team All-Conference, while Zay was named Third Team selection last season. Jones was also a First Team All-Conference member last season, while Weinstein had a place on the Second Team All-Conference. Wydo and Sarjeant are making their first All-Conference squad.
Gensler finished the league play with 40 points on 15 goals and 25 assists, which led all skaters during conference play. Wydo scored 32 points, netting 17 goals and adding 15 assists, which was good for fourth best during the conference season. Zay collected 27 points on 11 goals and 16 assists. Weinstein paced all defenseman with 27 points, scoring one goals and handing out 26 assists, while playing in 27 conference games. Jones finished conference action with 23 points on four goals and 19 assists, which was the second best defenseman scoring on the season. Sarjeant, who was the only unanimous choice, had a break out season, posting a 2.00 goals against average, a .943 saves percentage, a 14-0-5 record, while posting one shutout in 20 conference games this season.
The Second Team All-Conference forwards are Cole Gunner, Air Force; Alex Grieve, Bentley and Dan O’Donoghue, Mercyhurst. The defensive tandem on the Second Team is Adam McKenzie, Air Force and Matt Blomquist, Bentley. Branden Komm, Bentley is the Second Team goaltender. McKenzie was a First Team member last season.
Gunner netted 10 goals and added 21 helpers for 31 points, while Grieve, who finished second in conference scoring with 35 points, scored 18 goals and handed out 17 assists. O’Donoghue added 26 points on nine goals and 17 helpers. McKenzie finished tied for sixth in scoring amongst defensemen with 16 points on six goals and 10 assists. Blomquist finished second behind his teammate, Weinstein, with 23 points, scoring three goals and handing out 20 helpers. Komm finished the season with a 16-5-4 record, posting a 2.29 goals against average and a .925 saves percentage with one shutout.
The Third Team All-Conference front line is Jon Puskar, American International, Brant Harris, UConn and Andrew Gladiuk, Bentley. The pair that is on the blue line is Kevin Ryan, Niagara and Ben Danford, Canisius. In goal on the third team is Terry Shafer, Robert Morris.
Puskar finished tied for fourth in scoring with 32 points (17g, 15a), while Gladiuk posted 34 points, good for third in conference scoring, with 20 goals and 14 assists. Harris scored 25 points on 10 goals and 15 helpers in 25 games played this season. Ryan scored 10 points this season on five goals and five assists, while Danford added 19 points on three goals and 16 helpers. Shafer went 13-7-5 on the season, posting a 2.64 goals against average and a .919 saves percentage with two shutouts.
The Atlantic Hockey Association (AHA) was created on June 30, 2003 when nine institutions joined together to form a new Division I men’s ice hockey conference. The conference currently consists of twelve members: the United States Air Force Academy, American International College, the United States Military Academy, Bentley University, Canisius College, the University of Connecticut, the College of the Holy Cross, Mercyhurst University, Niagara University, Robert Morris University, Rochester Institute of Technology and Sacred Heart University. The AHA spans Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, and Colorado geographically, with its conference office located in Haverhill, MA.
