The Atlantic Hockey Association announced its regular season award winners and All-Conference teams on Thursday, March 17, at the first annual Atlantic Hockey Tournament banquet, held on the campus of Quinnipiac University. Quinnipiac sophomore defenseman Reid Cashman was named the Atlantic Hockey Player of the Year, while Mercyhurst freshman forward Ben Cottreau took home Atlantic Hockey Rookie of the Year honors.

Cashman, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound defenseman from Red Wing, Minn., began making his case for player of the year in Atlantic Hockey after the New Year, scoring 32 of his 36 league points in the second half of the season, leading the league in points production this season and capturing the Regular Season Scoring Trophy along the way. Cashman shattered his rookie scoring totals of 2-19-21 this season with 13 goals and 30 assists for 43 points, ranking him tops among defensemen nationally. The CSTV/Hockey Commissioners’ Association Player of the Month for February, Cashman was named a finalist for the esteemed Hobey Baker award earlier in the day Thursday, college hockey’s top award.

Cashman is one of seven players named to the Atlantic Hockey All-Conference First Team, as seven different teams were represented on the squad. The forwards included Tyler McGregor of Holy Cross, Pierre-Luc O’Brien of Sacred Heart, and Tim Olsen of Connecticut. Cashman is joined by Mercyhurst’s T.J. Kemp on defense. American International’s Frank Novello and Canisius’ Bryan Worosz both earned recognition as goaltenders. Cashman and O’Brien were both unanimous selections on the First Team.

Mercyhurst’s Cottreau, a 5-foot-11, 210-pound forward out of Toronto, Ontario, was chosen by the league’s coaches as the best rookie in the league for 2004-05. Cottreau finished second among first-year players in Atlantic Hockey in terms of scoring, with 14 goals and 10 assists, leading the league in game-winning goals with four during the season.

After guiding his team to the Atlantic Hockey regular season title, Quinnipiac head coach Rand Pecknold was the choice among the coaches for Coach of the Year in Atlantic Hockey. The Bobcats went from seventh place in the league back in mid-January all the way to first place with a week to go in the season, winning 13 of 15 games along the way.

The second annual Atlantic Hockey Tournament Championship kicks off on Friday at 4:30 p.m. when the host Bobcats of Quinnipiac take on seventh-seeded Bentley in the first semifinal of the day at the Northford Ice Pavilion in Northford, Conn. The second semifinal between fourth-seeded Holy Cross and third-seed Mercyhurst follows immediately after at 7:30 p.m. The two teams that will advance out of the semifinal round will meet in the Atlantic Hockey Championship, slated for Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in Northford.

The Atlantic Hockey Association arose when the nine current members joined together on June 30, 2003, to found a new Division-I men’s ice hockey conference. The league includes American International College, Army, Bentley College, Canisius College, the University of Connecticut, the College of the Holy Cross, Mercyhurst College, Quinnipiac University, and Sacred Heart University.
