Sacred Heart Blanks AIC Hockey 4-0

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Garrett Larson netted two goals to lead the Sacred Heart men’s ice hockey team to Friday night’s 4-0 win over American International College Friday night at the Olympia Ice Center. The win was the fifth straight for the Pioneers as they move to 9-14-3 and 9-6-2 in Atlantic Hockey while AIC saw its modest two game unbeaten streak stopped as they now stand at 4-18-3 and 3-11-3 in the league.
Sacred Heart staked itself to a 2-0 lead after one period. The Pioneers would get on the board with a shorthanded tally at 7:04, as Garrett Larson scored on an assist from Mike Reagan. SHU extended the lead to
2-0 1:32 later as William Billinghurst tipped in a shot attempt by Chuck Metcalfe. Chris Connerty added a secondary assist.
The Pioneers would add two more tallies in the second to increase their lead to 4-0. Erik Roos made it 3-0 at the 7:01 mark when his shot clanged in off the far left post. Larson’s second goal of the game at 12:48 gave Sacred Heart a four-goal cushion.
Frank Novello (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario) turned away 44 shots in goal for American International, while Kevin LaPointe turned away 23 shots en route to the shutout.
AIC and Sacred Heart square off Saturday at 5:00 at the Milford Ice Pavilion in the second game of the home-and-home. The next Yellow Jacket home game is Friday, February 20 when AIC entertains Quinnipiac in a 7:00 contest.
