Dan Brown Scores First Career Goal
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Dan Brown scored his first collegiate goal and Brad Roberts made 31 saves, but it was not enough as Army fell to visiting Mercyhurst, 5-2, Friday night in front of 1,538 disappointed fans at Tate Rink.
A late insertion into the lineup, Brown chipped in a rebound from the far post with Mercyhurst goalie Andy Franck sprawled out on the ice. Franck saved Chad Fifield's original shot, but Brown was Johnny-on-the-spot, collecting the rebound and roofing the puck into a practically empty net. Dustin Healey picked up an assist on the play as well, extending his point streak to four straight games since entering the Black Knights' lineup against Canisius.
Mercyhurst (15-11-2/12-5-1 AHA) jumped out to 2-0 lead after one period of play on goals by Mike Kirby and Adam Tackaberry. Lakers' team captain pushed the visitors' lead to three seven minutes into the second, before Brown put the hosts on the board at 12:38.
Unfortunately, Army (11-11-3/5-9-3 AHA) could not gain any momentum off Brown's tally, as Mercyhurst followed up Brown's marker with its fourth goal of the night just 11 seconds later.
Michael Picone pulled the Black Knights within two with 30 seconds left in the second period. However, Mercyhurst made Army pay in the third period for a turnover at its own blue line when Kyle Gourgon scored shorthanded on a breakaway with 5:38 left in the game.
Brad Roberts made 31 saves for Army, while Franck stopped 38 shots for the Lakers.
Army and Mercyhurst go at it again Saturday night with a 7 p.m. faceoff scheduled at Tate Rink.
