NORTHFORD, Conn. --- Bentley College freshman forward Carmen Posteraro (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic HS) recorded a goal and two assists, including the game-winner, and sophomore goaltender Geordan Murphy (Matawan, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) made 33 saves en route to his first career win, as the Falcons upended Quinnipiac University 3-2 in Atlantic Hockey action Saturday night.
With the win, the Falcons snapped two dubious streaks, including 17 straight losses at the hands of the Bobcats and most importantly the four-game slide they were on coming into the game, as they improved to 6-15-4 overall and 4-10-4 in league games.
Posteraro's game-winner, his third of the season, started when sophomore Ryan Lessnau (Southfield, Mich./Seaholm HS) dropped a pass to the streaking forward, who moved the puck from his forehand to his backhand in front of Quinnipiac goalie Justin Eddy (Apple Valley, Minn) and tucked it into the net.
Down 2-0 heading into the third period, Quinnipiac (11-12-4, 8-5-4 AHA) twice climbed to within a goal, compliments of junior Matt Froehlich's two scores. The first came at 3:09 and brought the score to 2-1, but Posteraro's score ballooned the lead back to two.
Froelich struck again, this time on the power play at 17:01, but Murphy and the Falcons defense held on in the final minutes, with Murphy making 11 of his 33 in final frame.
Bentley took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, courtesy of sophomore Ryan Lessnau's (Southfield, Mich./Seaholm HS) tally at 3:36. The second-year forward skated into the Quinnipiac zone alongside teammate Posteraro who made a move to the outside then flipped a pass to Lessnau who converted for the early Falcon advantage. Murphy had a huge opening 20 minutes for the Falcons, collecting 16 saves in the first, including several from point blank.
Freshman defenseman Kyle Larman (Canton, Mich./Plymouth-Canton HS) gave Bentley a two-goal cushion midway through the second frame on a one-timer from just above the circle, that found its way through traffic and into the net. Posteraro set the play up and was credited with his second helper of the night, when he collected the loose puck and dropped it off to Larman for the slap shot. Larman stretched his point-scoring streak to three games and Posteraro now has eight points in Bentley's last six games.
The two teams meet again Saturday night at the John A. Ryan Skating Arena in Watertown.
