Mercyhurst Downs Army Hockey, 6-3

Lakers open up close game with four goals in second period

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Mercyhurst scored four goals in the second period, erasing a one-goal deficit en route to its second win over Army in as many days, 6-3, Saturday night at Tate Rink.

Jon Boyle scored a power play goal and assisted on Army's final tally of the day. Chris Casey briefly gave the Black Knights (11-12-3/5-10-3 AHA) and their 1,620 fans in attendance something to chear about when he made a breakaway count at 7:19 of the second period, lifting Army to a 2-1 advantage. However, Michael Picone's marker with 4:25 left in the game was not enough.

Mercyhurst's Rich Hansen finished off a 2-on-1 break, capitalizing off an Army turnover at the blue line, to put the visiting Lakers in front for good 3-2 at 12:40 of the second period. Scott Champagne tacked on another before the period ended and then added his second marker of the game two minutes into the third as Mercyhurst (16-11-2/13-5-1 AHA) took a commanding lead, 5-2.

David Wrigley capped a five-goal run for the Lakers on the power play at 12:56 of the final stanza. Wrigley, Borrelli and Hansen finished with a goal and an assist each, Scott Reynolds recorded two assists and Champagned scored two goals and picked up an assist to lead Mercyhurst.

Picone scored a goal and added an assist for Army.

Brad Roberts made 17 saves in goal for Army. He was relieved with 7:04 left in the game by senior Bill Moss, who stopped two shots. Lakers' netminder Andy Franck stopped 30 of 33 shots for the visitors.

Army hits the road Friday, Feb. 20 for Storrs, Conn., and its first meeting this year with the Connecticut Huskies. The Black Knights will play UConn three times in a 15-day span beginning Friday. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
