WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army toppled visiting Canisius, 4-3, Friday night with
its first third-period comeback of the season in front of 1,442 spectators
at Tate Rink. The Black Knights, who trailed by a goal entering the third,
halted the Griffins' seven-game unbeaten streak in league play, while
extending its win streak over the Griffs to three straight.
Chad Fifield scored his third goal of the season with 2 minutes 21 seconds
remaining in the game to break a 3-3 tie and send the homestanding Black
Knights (9-10-3/4-8-3 AHA) to the victory. Canisius fell to 5-9-7 overall
and 5-5-3 in league play. Dustin Healey, making his first appearance of the season, beat Canisius goalie Bryan Worosz at the 10:34 mark to knot the contest at three apiece.
Brad Roberts stopped 28 of 31 shots, but none were bigger than the save he
made on Canisius' Rob Martin with just over seven minutes remaining in the
game. Martin intercepted an Army pass at the blue line, while the hosts were on a power play, and walked in all alone on the Black Knights' netminder. Martin tried to beat Roberts five hole, but the steady netminder closed up in time, preserving a 3-3 tie. Worosz made 27 saves in net for Canisius.
Chris MacLeod, who finished with a goal and an assist, opened the scoring in the first period with a short-handed effort at 12:50. However, the Griffs struck right back with a goal by David Kasch on the same power play just 27 seconds after MacLeod's tally. Kasch finished with two goals and one assist for the visitors.
Jaymie Harrington put Canisius on top early in the second period with his
fifth goal of the season. Army's Chris Garceau then tied the game at 2-2
with 13:32 left in the second period with a power play goal. Kasch potted
his second of the night at 16:23 of the middle stanza, staking the Griffs to a 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.
With the win, the Black Knights move into sixth place in the Atlantic Hockey standings, two points behind Canisius.
