Mercyhurst Tops AIC 9-0
December 6, 2003
Erik Johnson (Coon Rapids, MN) picked up four points with a goal and three assists as Mercyhurst had nine different players notch a goal and 13 total recording at least one point, while rookie netminder Jordan Wakefield (Spurcegrove, Alberta) picked up his first collegiate win as the Lakers defeated American International College 9-0 this afternoon in an Atlantic Hockey contest.
With the win, the Lakers improve to 6-5-1 overall and 4-3-0 in the league, while AIC drops their second straight falling to 2-11-1 overall and 2-5-1 in conference.
In an active first period of play, Mercyhurst College jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Erik Johnson (Coon Rapids, MN) and Jon Asselstine (Barrie, Ont.). Despite the Yellow Jackets out-shooting the Lakers by four, 14-10, AIC was denied on their lone golden opportunity of the first period when senior Guillaume Caron (Saint Nicolas, Que.) was stopped on a breakaway by Wakefield.
The Lakers struck for three goals in the second period scoring twice in a three minute span on tallies by freshman Kyle Gourgon (Stittsville, Ont.) and Borrelli. Gourgon netted his marker at 3:01 slapping a shot just under the pads of AIC goalie Chad Davis (Allen Park, MI), while Borrelli's ripped a slap shot just over the blue line for the fourth goal of the contest. Junior Mike Kirby (Nanaimo, BC) added the final goal in the second period.
Mercyhurst poured it on in the final period of play netting four goals including three in the final 1:53 of play.
Davis stopped 29 shots in the loss, while Wakefield gains his first collegiate win with 30 saves.
